Burnt Offerings: Chapter Two

It was the thunderstone that changed everything.

The sound was like the crack of a thousand whips in a storm. Its blasting noise exploded from the cathedral, echoing stridently throughout the town and into the countryside, the twilight of the wilderness almost shaking as wildlife panicked and birds scattered.

Seraph shuddered over the keening vibration--the shock of the noise took his breath away, and caused Shayliss to slip onto the soft dirt. He leaned over a tombstone in the graveyard and gasped as he helped her back up.

"Wha... what was that!? What was it!?" Shayliss was shrill with agitation and anger, but Seraph remained silent. His last thoughts were still fresh in his mind, and his passions were extinguished by the violent sound; suddenly, despite being all too aware that the graveyard was a place for the dead, it seemed alive with shadows.

They might have lingered longer, had they time to regain their composure. A few moments to calm themselves and regain their breath, and they might have calmly travelled back into the siderooms of the cathedral, then to determine what had caused the noise.

They did not; rather, they raced around the massive building at a full run, desperate to determine what had happened. For the thunderstone had changed everything too quickly, and the tortured screams had already begun.

Burnt Offerings: Chapter Two

The cathedral was built with three wings around a vast, circular gallery, each wing bearing both prominent central doors, and smaller side doors within forecourts. The closest forecourt, just around the south bend from the stage, was where the woman's tortured screams had originated... and where they had been cut off.

His ears still ringing from the sharp crack of the thunderstone, Quinn burst from around the corner to see what had happened... and soon he wished he had lingered on the stage.

"N-no..."

Her body laid in the prostrate gardens, their white flowers splattered red by blood. Her movements were languid and aimless, the last motions of a woman caught in quickening death, and slowly, she that oozed from a long, jagged gash in her thigh, blackening her indigo skirt. Deep and terrible as this wound was, however, it was not the worst, for her throat had been hacked twice, nearly to the bone.

Quinn ran to her, struggling to hold back tears of desperation. He was already praying for Sarenrae to heal her wounds as he arrived. Even as he tore off pieces of cloth from his alb to stem the blood gurgling from her neck, he prayed. It was a futile gesture in the face of such nightmarish and cruel wounds, but he did so anyways, his tongue stumbling fearfully over verses he wished never to speak.

Even as tears dripped from his face onto hers, he prayed. Even as the agony in her eyes faded into the glaze of death... even as Father Zantus pulled him away...

"Quinn..." Father Zantus firmly grasped the acolyte's blood-soaked hands, struggling to calm him. The priest quickly glanced at those who dared to follow him; most of the crowd was far too terrified to approach closer than a few dozen yards, but for a few exceptions. Belor and Alde had ran to investigate shortly after Zantus chased after Quinn, and Cedriana followed with Kuroda, both anticipating another person to help on their way. And from the other direction, Seraph, his belt and baldric still loose, had just arrived from around the corner, with Shayliss close behind.

His eyes did not linger on them long, however... for they soon followed the spattered trail of crimson that led from them to behind one of the wagons...

Belor took a deep breath and drew his mighty claymore from his back, motioning for Alde to do the same. Even with a two-handed grip, the sword shook in his hands as he crept forward.

"Favour us with your light, holy Sarenrae..." Quinn mumbled, continuing his prayers.

"I..." Shayliss covered her mouth, as it to hold back her fright.

"Sweet Dawnflower, grant... grant us relief for our pain..."

"Quinn..." Father Zantus took a step back with Quinn, now cringing under the challenge to stay calm himself.

All the others approached the wagon; Alde and Belor beside each other, matching swords held low; Kuroda just behind, struggling to keep his mind from racing as he fumbled for the dagger he kept in the back of his boot; Cedriana off to the side, fearfully fidgeting with one of her scarves; and Seraph further back, desperately wishing he had one of the dozens of weapons he had left at the Rusty Dragon.

"Gods..." Belor's grip weakened as he quickly cornered the wagon to where the trail ended. Only he knew what to do in this sort of situation... but even he wasn't ready for what he saw.

"...no."

It was a foul little monster, standing just under four feet tall, and dressed in filthy, raggard cloths that reeked of rot and blood. Its flesh was a bruised and pebbled grey-green, and its eyes were beady and widely spaced on its overlarge head.

It stood, slightly hunched, fearlessly leering at them as if amused by their revulsion. It slowly rose its serrated, dripping blade of crudely beaten metal to its grin of broken teeth, and drew its long tongue along its slick surface, drawing more blood into its sticky mouth.

It was mocking them... for it alone knew what was about to happen next.

The tanned leather covering the wagons were ripped off by hands within them, and dozens more of the nasty creatures burst from them. Even as they leapt down from the vehicles they were already attacking, lashing out with their crude scrap weapons at the many townsfolk who had lingered too curiously. Those who did not fall, turned to flee, screams of terror and a shrill, evil chant following them.

"Goblins chew and goblins bite!
Goblins kill and goblins fight!
Stab the dog and cut the horse,
Goblins eat and take by force!"

Seraph stammered at the sight which brought a macabre sense of nostalgia back to him. The scent of vitae. The smell of carnage. He remembered those. He hated those.

When he saw the goblin Seraph knew what was coming next. He felt it in his bones that nothing could ever go right for him. His luck would never change, the gods had seen to that.

As soon as the goblins lept from the wagon Seraph grabbed Shayliss in one hand and his dagger in the other, the weapon out and ready for battle as fast as lightning. After all his life on the street Seraph would never forget one rule: when your gonna lose, find an out.

"Shayliss come with me!" He screamed over the din of terror around him. Seraph led the lady back, away from the goblins. Away from the death, the brutality, into the graveyard.

Alde was scared from the moment Belor unsheated his sword, and was reluctant and scared to do the same. The only time he ever drew his sword was for practice, and he knew, somehow, deep inside that this was terribly different. He hated seeing the blood, it shook him to his deepest core. He tried so desperately to remain brave and stand tall next to Belor, for Belor, but he couldn't. He nearly dropped his sword when the goblins jumped out of the wagons and almost turned to run himself. Their macabre rhyme seemed wholy wrong to Alde, who had only heard nice ones from his mother when he was younger. To hear such a warm childhood memory corrupted like this made him want to run and cover his ears with his hands, and he almost did.

Then he saw the people getting attacked and overrun by these diabolic beasts, and he knew, that while the Gods had made him dumb, they had also made him strong and for this very reason. He grabbed his sword in both hands, ran towards the nearest person being attacked by one of these creatures... these bullies, and for the first time ever swung his sword with all his might to forcibly try and stop these assailaints, just to try and help those who were being attacked. "STOP!!!" He screamed, as if yelling loud enough would be enough to make the boogymen disappear.

"Alde, wait!" Belor ordered, as Alde charged--but he spoke too late. The blade cut through the air and deep into one of the goblins, crumpling the small creature as its body was rent apart, and embedding itself into the dirt; and as Belor turned distracted the blood-soaked goblin before him tore away behind another wagon.

Alde stared at the gory corpse of what he had killed... at the blood now dripping from his weapon and soaking into the earth. Goblin blood, pooling into the blood of men and women. It all looked so much the same...

Over the screams of the crowd, the desperate thanks of the wounded man he charged to protect, and above all, the hideous song of the goblins, Alde didn't hear the creatures clambering over the wagon next to him. All he heard was their shriek when they leapt at his head.

By the time Alde had turned, one of them was already upon him, the filthy goblin mounted on his back with one hand clinging to his hair, and the other bashing wildly at the guard's scaled armour with a broken cleaver. Alde spun around, too shocked to fend it off effectively, as another leapt onto the man before him, dropping him with a few brutal stabs into his shoulder.

Looking helplessly at the dagger in his hand, Kuroda backed up. "This thing is next to useless to me," he growled, "I need my armor and my sword. Cedriana, do you know the fastest way to the white deer inn from here?"

Belor shook his head and took a deep breath as he struggled to maintain composure in the face of the carnage before him, before he caught Kuroda's words.

"Your gear?" He yelled, running closer while dodging a rock thrown by one of the chittering goblins. "You can fight?"

He grit his teeth as he watched Seraph flee from the battle. "...take my sword, then. Save as many as you can--I think that bastard has got something to do with this."

Cedriana looked around at the scene of bloodshed unfolding itself around her. This is madness, why....?! Her thoughts were cut off as one of the filthy goblins bit into the neck of some woman near the wagon and her scream seemed to echo within Cedriana's head. Looking down she saw one of her starknifes had somehow found its way into her hand. Before jumping into combat, before joining the force protecting her town, Kuroda's question rang in her head and she was pulled out of her shocked state. "The White Deer? Yes, this way... up Church street."

She started to lead Kuroda away to the inn when Belor stopped him. Cedriana smiled weakly at Kuroda then joined him in protecting the town. Twirling her starknife in her hand she picked out a target, aiming for one of the goblins by Alde's feet, and let the small disc of death fly... but it missed, embedding itself in the wood of a wagon.

"Thank you," Kuroda said as he resheathed the dagger and accepted the sword. Nodding to Cedriana he cleared his throat. "Everyone together," he shouted, "down the street away from these things. Leave nobody behind and bring anyone you find in the streets with you." Raising the borrowed blade Kuroda followed at the rear of the crowd, ready to fend off any of the vile creatures that come near.

Alde was stunned and startled as the creatures lunged onto him, and started stabbing him with their cruel weapons. His sword was quickly forgotten as it clattered to the ground and he tried to grab at the creature's arms as they viciously stabbed at him from his back. Using one of the few options open to him, he tried to turn the blades of the goblins against them, and attempted to stab the goblin on his back with its own weapon, turning his head to the side to hopefully allow the blow to connect with the creature's face.

"Ahhh! Get off! NO!"

Alde managed to grab the goblin's arm just as its cleaver made a swipe towards his neck, and wrenched it away from the creature at the last moment. His blind swing connected with something with a grotesque thud, and Alde could feel the splatter of warm blood onto his neck. The goblin's grip weakened, and it fell to the ground, with the broad, square blade of its own rusted weapon deep within a rent across its face.

The guard could hardly catch his breath before the other one was upon him, however, and it was only Cedriana's quick thinking that saved him.

Cursing her aim as her knife throw missed she turned to assess any new threats. Seeing the young guard with Belor get swamped by these foul creatures Cedriana did a quick twist of her body to unfurl the scarves wrapped around her. In a blur of color she gracefully turned and with practiced movements striked out at the creature leaping at Alde's with her scarf. A long ribbon of greenish-blue lashed out and the hidden blades gashed into the beast causing its blood to spray out in a long arch following the path of the scarf as she quickly jerked it back to ready it for another attack. She was ready to retreat with Kuroda and the others, but she wouldn't leave the poor guard alone to fend for himself.

The goblin shrieked as Cedriana's bladed scarf sliced its skin, tumbling to the ground as it dropped from Alde. But the wound, for all its gore, was shallow, and now incensed, it quickly spun onto its feet and lunged at Cedriana. Kuroda tried to block the creature with Belor's claymore, but it felt too light, too fast in his hands, and rather than striking true, he swung it into the dirt, before the feet of the goblin. Charging too fast, the murderous goblin stumbled over the blade just as it was about to strike, and it was its wrist, rather than its knife, that it rammed into Cedriana's kneecap.

Bedlam spiralled into the town as they fought. The maimed fled terrified alongside the uninjured, fighting their way into houses, behind cover, through crowds, desperate for some sort of protection, hounded by the screeching goblins.

Soon, the three of them no longer fought to protect the living... they fought to protect the dying. They fought in an abattoir, surrounded by scores of dead and wounded, whose moans mingled with the with the hellish warsong.

"Goblins race and goblins jump!
Goblins slash and goblins bump!
Burn the skin and bash the head,
Goblins here and you be dead!"

Seraph gasped for breath as he skidded to a halt, hand-in-hand with Shayliss. The shadows of the graveyard seemed to swim, to beckon him, but the graveyard seemed a horrific route of escape. He wanted to survive... down that way was just another place to die.

He hardly heard Belor pushing after him, slow in his clinking armour, or Shayliss' frantic sobbing. All he could hear were the thoughts of his own escape. That's all that mattered.

He stood just where the cathedral overlooked Downtown, underneath the high bluff. In the waning orange light of the sunset, the ten-foot gap between the cliff and the nearest building was a pit of darkness, and the steep drop seemed rough and treacherous.

He blinked, looking back at Shayliss, terrified in his arms, and Belor, charging ever closer to him. Could he climb? Could he jump...?

He could see smoke began to rise from the commons as a screechy voice screamed in triumph.

"Fire! Aha! Fire! Fire!"

Another four of the goblins bounded up from the inside of the now-smoldering wagon, dangerously waving torches that belched hot sparks onto their own rags. They hopped down, gleefully prodding the flames towards the humans, and even occasionally at each other. As they made their eager approach, yet another arose from the wagon, this one fouler than any before it. It was a female goblin, as they could tell from the hideous breasts exposed from the poorly-cured dog hide it wore, and it carried a whip high in one hand, that snapped back from the goblins to the humans randomly, catching Cedriana once on the cheek.

"Burn the skin! Burn the skin!"

"Vile beast" Kuroda snarled as he drew the claymore up and stabbed it straight down at the prone goblins chest, but it spun away too quickly, and his weapon hit the dirt a second time.

Swinging her bladed scarf back and over her shoulder to get it out of the way Cedriana back-peddled a few steps, putting some distance between her and the goblin with the knife before her. Filthy beast nearly ended my dancing career! Pain lanced through her knee, but she counted it a blessing and silently offered a prayer to Desna that Kuroda had tripped up the goblin in its attempt to stab her. "Thank you Kuroda."

...Blind the goblins, knock-out and stun,
This is how I have my fun!..

Her mind rang in automatic response to the goblin's wicked tune. Strangely the battle before Cedriana was exciting her. The true scope and horror of the event had yet to set in.

Cedriana reached down to her side and from within a pouch pulled forth a small pinch of multi-colored sand which she flung forward with a delicate twisting movement of her wrist. Concentrating on the magic within everything in the world around her she forced her personality and wrestled it to do her will. Your mind is more powerful than the magic, her Papa would always say, Now prove it! She spoke arcane words of power, quick and sharp syllables that she heard whispered to her by the winds many years ago. From her outstretched hand shot a cone of vivid and vibrant hues of red, blue, and yellow that burst forth to envelope the vile creatures.

The goblin that had dodged Kuroda's attack rolled right into the cone of light, and it began to screech and clutch its eyes as it gazed into the swirling patterns.

"No! No fire!" Alde screamed at the goblins. Tears were starting to trace trails through his dirty and blood-soaked face. He was scared, but didn't want to see more people get hurt or his town burned down. No longer having to fend off two goblins from his back, he reaches down for his sword and as he stands back up he swings it at one of the goblins weilding the torches. "Stop now!"

But the goblins are able to easily see the attack comming and with the tears in his eyes, Alde cannot make an accurate enough attack and the goblins easily avoid the clumsy swing, ducking under the hasty attack.

Taking advantage of the goblin's blindness Cedriana twists her hips and with a quick spin brings her bladed scarf to bear and lashes out once again at the beast to end its screeching, for good.

Her aim is off and the blades at the end go flying harmlessly over the goblin's shoulder. With another graceful twist Cedriana pulls the scarf back in a flourish and prepares to launch another attack.

Can't die. Can't die. Can't die.

The thoughts rung in Seraph's head.

Can't die. Can't die. Can't die.

He was becoming more frantic, more paranoid with every step into the graveyard.

Can't die. Can't die. Can't die.

He couldn't hear Shayliss, though he wanted her to live too. Seraph's subconscious knew though that if it was him or her...

Can't die. Can't die. Can't die.

Seraph rounded towards the cliffside and looked down. The drop scared him, could he make it? By himself? Maybe.

Could Shayliss?

"Shayliss!" He called out over the din of battle, "I'm going to need you to trust me!"

Can't die. Can't die. Can't die.

Her whimpering scared him, made him feel like the situation was hopeless. Seraph began moving Shayliss toward the cliff.

"I need you to climb down, I'll help you. I'll follow you. I'm not going to leave you Shayliss!" He would be true to his word. For once.

"Gahh!"

Alde gasped as one of the goblins suddenly leapt and thrust its torch into his face, causing him to stagger back. Pressing the advantage, the disgusting female goblin took the chance to whip at Alde's sword, trying to wrench it from his hands as it wrapped around the base of the blade. Despite his distraction, however, the guard was far too much larger and stronger for the goblin to succeed, and after a brief struggle the whip came free.

Sneering, the goblin then whipped at Cedriana's face a second time, this time more soundly, hitting just beside the first strike on her cheek and leaving a stinging trickle of blood.

"Damn claymore," Kuroda grumbled, he couldn't even hit a prone goblin with the blasted thing. Setting his feet more solidly and adjusting his grip, he dove towards the wagon to take a swing at the ugly female one with the whip.

She had no fear of his approach, and perhaps that was the only reason he reached her. As the torch-wielding goblins tried to keep him from the wagon with more aggressive swings, she sneered her broken teeth and lashed her whip at his arm, hoping to drag him down.

It was an arrogant mistake, for Kuroda was nearly as large as Alde, and far more focused. After the thong wrapped around his arm, Kuroda forced himself backwards with a surge of strength, easily overpowering the little goblin and tearing the weapon from her hands. Disarmed and staggered, Kuroda knew he had his chance, and the sword flashed as he swung with all his might.

The goblin raised her arms reflexively to defend herself, but it made no difference. The claymore hacked through them and embedded itself halfway into her chest in a great, bloody rend.

Scared and startled by the attacks from the goblins (not to mention a little burned) Alde stumbled back, his sword flailing over his head, his other arm flapping wildly, as he tried to regain his balance. Finally he found his footing, gripped his sword with both hands, and swung it down with all his might atop the head of the goblin which burned him, as if it were nothing more than a large club.

But despite his awkward swing, his might was enough to break through any defenses the goblin had, and he was able to sink his blade into the creature. "No burn!" He cried out in a terrified voice, visibly afraid and shaken by this whole experience.

"I--I can't--"

Shayliss blubbered in fear even as Seraph helped to lower her down. Seraph did his best to steady her as her hands fumbled at the rough dirt and exposed, rotting roots in the cliffside, but nevertheless, she was taking too long. Eventually, she managed to safely slide down onto a large, flat boulder, and then jump into the ditch behind the building, and Seraph girded himself to do the same.

"No, Seraph!"

He heard Shayliss' warning too late, and he only turned as Belor tackled him down with a grunt. His body slammed just on the edge of the cliff; his head hung in the air, where he could glance at Shayliss and the steep drop below, and above him, the sheriff loomed. The dark, burly man immediately rose to place his knee onto Seraph's chest, forcing him to wheeze for air.

"I knew you were part of the Sczarni the moment I saw you." Belor slid his knee lower as he began his accusations. "The fireworks were Jubrayl's idea, and the wagons that held the goblins were supposed to hold them."

His eyes scanned Downtown, where many of the townsfolk had fled. Few of the goblins seemed to have chased that far. "You were working for him," he said, bringing his cold stare back on the prone man. "What the hell is the Sczarni doing?"

Seraph wheezed as the Sheriff's knee moved into his torso.

"W-what the fuck are you talking about," He spat at the man.

Seraph remembered the dagger hidden...somewhere in his armor but he couldn't remember the exact locale. 'till it started grinding into his back. He wouldn't be able to reach it and if this idiot kept at his current agenda it was looking like the Sheriff would be Judge, Jury, and Executioner. That scared Seraph a little, but oddly he wasn't afraid of this man. Not in any way, shape or form like he was afraid of the goblins. Not like he was terrified only moments before. Maybe it was because Shayliss was safe.

Seraph coughed once, then grabbed the man and attempted to free himself. No punk bitch from some backwater town was going to get him killed.
