Damascus IV

Damacus IV is a prominent Hive World and Sub-Sector Capital. It is an ancient world, having been settled thousands of years ago, and featured in a number of Imperial records as a centre of commerce, politics and military activity.

Closely situated to the gulf of stars beyond the Imperium which would be the target of Macharius' crusade early in M41, Damascus IV was long the centre of Imperial defense forces in the local area, counterattacking alien and renegade forces that occasionally made their way in from the Halo Zone, as well as supplying a base of operation for Astartes strike forces that periodically launched destabilising assaults on massing Xenos threats. As such it's importance in local Imperial space is significant and it's ancient name is greatly respected.

The geography of the world is unusual for a Hive world. The Hives themselves are situated along the coasts of temperate, shallow seas which are extensively utilised as a food sources. The world itself is warm, it's temperature further increased by the greenhouse gases produced by the many Hives which dot it's surface, and it's air is unbreathable without aid. However thousands of years ago Magus Biologis enabled subtle yet effective modification of the native sea life, enabling them to survive as the seas grew warmer and their chemical composition was changed by atmospheric and polluting influences. The Adepts of Mars consider the marine fauna of Damacus IV to be divine examples of blessed genetic engineering, and maintain several remote shrines on small islands in the midst of the seas where the carefully study the various sea creatures, hoping to divine the will of the Machine God in the unique genetic code of these modified animals. Some believe that these adepts are even capable of predicting the future in this manner, though no true Emperor fearing citizen would place his trust in
anything but the Tarot.

The numerous continents that make up around a third of the surface of Damacus IV are very lightly inhabited. Rocky, inhospitable and lifeless, the deserts of the inlands are nontheless of great significance, for it is here that much of the worlds natural resouces are found. Natural fuels such as prometheum and veins of raw materials can be located within these areas, though they tend to be found in many small deposits rather than single large ones, which is why the hives were not constructed there. Instead, tribes of prospectors travel the area, carefully scanning for natural materials which, when found, they trade the precise location of with Hive mining grounds who deploy their mobile drillers to obtain the materials. These tribes are nomadic but they also are extremely wealthy, with the major banking groups in the hives being owned by those who have profited from resource prospecting.

Despite this, however, these tribes battle each other in the sands fiercely for the bounty of the desert, and veterans of these conflicts are often inducted into the Imperial Guard where they operate as desert and mountain combat specialists.

The Hives themselves are magnificent examples of Gothic architecture, towering cathedrals, nobile spires, merchant houses and administratum offices, each gilded in various precious metals, reaching far into the sky above the foundries and hab blocks below where the population toil to process the resources found in the deserts. Underneath these blocks is the underhive, where gangs battle over the abandoned tunnels, power stations and refineries for respect and salvage, with blessed archeotech being the most valued find. Law and order above the underhive is strong, however, with the ruling families enforcing their status and the obedience of those below with an iron fist. Always a planet strong with religious fervour, with the nomadic tribesmen of the deserts holding to strict, ancient beliefs in the ways of the God-Emperor, and the Hives having many examples of classic Ecclesiarchical architecture, since the Macharian Crusade Damascus IV has been inundated with pilgrims seeking to start the Macharian crusade, and as such many cathedrals and cults have flourished there. The Ecclesiarchy holds much sway over the politics of Damascus IV, and it's Guard regiments and PDF are often accompanied by priests and other such holy men, who lead them both in prayer and comabt. There is even a small convent of Sororitas there, who guard the planetary Cardinal and ensure that scripture is upheld.

Above the planet orbits a Ramiles class star fort, Eternal Sentinel. This star fort has been heavily modified to provide berths for many more ships than usual, in order for local Battlefleet elements to resupply and rearm here between patrols, and merchant freighters to trade their wares. As such, the shipwrights of Damascus IV are considered skilled in the maintance of many different vessels and it's star ports are amongst the busiest in local Imperial space.
