People, places, and things

Howdy again folks!
This is the thread for a run down on the setting of the quick post scenarios. We will be adventuring in the Forgotten Realms, primarily in the North and along the Sword Coast regions.
Now, before you start freaking out and pouring through your FR campaign books for hints, characters, and clues, let me say, and I know I speak for Johnny as well, that our version of the Realms is a tad different from the information in the books. Through the years, we've made changes that make for a better adjustment in our games.

For example, most of the major NPC personalities - Khelben Blackstaff, Alustriel, the Harpells, Elminster - won't show up to save the day with a snap of their fingers. They are too busy (if they even exist?) to look after a bunch of adventurers. So, when you uncover a plot by the followers of Auril to plunge the North in eternal winter (as if that could happen! ) don't expect someone like Drizzt Do'Urden to save the day.

Other changes may include inaccessibility to the plethora of magic items that tend to float around in "monty haul" games. Certainly the Realms is chock full of magic and magical creatures, but that doesn't mean that every character will have 12 items or that every town will have a magic exchange shop for you to buy and trade. We don't want characters to be walking "tanks" with enough firepower to level an entire Orc army.

What you CAN expect from our version of the Realms is a lot of interaction with the personalities and races of all types.

I will expound on that more later....

Great map of our gaming region

Here is a dandy map of the Sword Coast area where virtually all of the scenarios have occurred. You'll find Thornhold just south of the Mere of Dead Men. Just to the right at the tip of the Sword Mountains lies Kheldell (Dreys hometown), and if continue south, you'll see the Redcliffs and Red Rocks. And at the very bottom of the map, you can see the tips of a forest - that is the Ardeep Forest where the Green Glade is located.
Way up to the north is Conyberry (Almego's hometown). That just leaves Mirko and Babelson - where you fellers from?

More to come......

More links to downloads

What I posted in OOC earlier was a link to some information about the North. Well, here is a link to the webpage on WOTC that allows you to view or download the entire 16 mb file!
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/frx/20050428a

Or you can view it in chunks at your leisure.

Now, at this link - http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads - you can download specific supplements on the Realms. Note: these are 2nd Edition supplements - however, much of the information is the exact same as the 3rd Edition stuff. I recommend you at least look at the following titles: Savage Frontier, Volo's Guide to the North, and of course, The North.

More links to come....

Maps of the Realms

Attached is a large map of the realms. It is kinda fuzzy but I think you can get the gist of it. On the left side of the map is the Trackless Sea. To the north of that title is a boxed off region where Waterdeep is located (remember, Thornhold is just a few miles north of Waterdeep). To the south of the title, follow the coastline, and you will see Lathtarl's Lantern near the bottom edge of the map.

Here is a map of the Waterdeep region (the boxed area on the above map). Thornhold is just outside of the northern edge of the map and of course, Lathtarl's Lantern is far to the south. You might also note the Stump Bog and Ardeep Forest where Bra'kan and Mirko and Babelson fought Raven the wolf-beast and met the Lady of the Glade.

One more map - this one to the far north along the coast of the Trackless Sea (where it is already snowing!). You'll note near the bottom of the map is the continuation of Neverwinter Woods and you'll see a smoking volcano - Mount Hotenow. You might recall that name in a very recent post.
