Kaira The Songbird

Name: Kaira Broken Mockingbird (Assassin Name: Silent Nightingale)
Player: TagalongDT
Caste: Night
Concept: Wandering Bard turned Assassin
Age: 25
Motivation: Ensure the world no longer needs her abilities as a Night caste.
Anima: As Kaira begins expending essence a faint tune can be heard on the edge of everyone's hearing. The more essence she spends the louder the music becomes and golden notes can be seen surrounding her, playing in time to the music. With more and more essence being spent the music becomes louder and the notes both brighter and occuring more often. Finally, as her essence hits a breaking point, so does her anima banner, the notes fade, leaving nothing but a figure swathed in pure white and the dreadful sound of silence that follows the music of the heavens.

Background: All Kaira ever wanted to do was make music, to play those melodious sounds that tug at the emotions of mortals and exalts alike. But being born into the Shadowed Order of Peace Keepers (or Shadow Keepers) meant she had certain responsibilities to deal with, responsibilities that specifically excluded being in the public eye.

The Shadow Keepers themselves were a small clan of assassins, spies and saboteurs founded in the early Shogunate era. Since their inception they’d pushed themselves toward a single goal: ensuring the continued peace and stability of Cherak. Mostly this entailed the reformation or removal of certain corrupted officials. As part of the clan Kaira was expected to take part in the clan’s peace keeping efforts, not bar hop while pursuing a romantic musical career. So she spent her youth doing as little training as possible in the shadowed arts while practicing as much as possible in musical studies, and over all being a disappointment to her elders.

But fate is a fickle thing mortals aren’t meant to understand, and the Shadow Keepers were mortals playing a game meant for gods, so it was only a matter of time before something slipped up. The death of a certain corrupted official severed only to anger her even more corrupted Dragon-Blooded higher up; who decided that the minor annoyance of the clan needed to be swatted away. Two Dragon Blooded and the early part of an evening was all it took to wipe out a clan of assassins generations old. All except one young girl out singing at the local taverns.

Kaira returned home near the end of the attack, just in time to catch the attention of the two attacking Dragon-Blooded. Faced with the prospect of fighting two princes of creation Kaira did the only thing that her honor and duty told her to do: she ran. She ran as far and as fast as she could, using every trick she knew to evade the two dragon blooded.

In her flight Kaira eventually made it far to the south of of Cherak (as far south as a rider can make in less than a day anyway) and finally clasped along the edge of a ravine. Then fate decided to intervene and the nearly unthinkable happened: she fell down a hole. Ironically, this saved her life, thinking she was dead the Dragon Blooded gave up their pursuit and returned to Cherak.

...

Much later Kaira left the cavern to return to what was left of her home. What she found on her return home nearly destroyed her. The estate, her clan's ancestrial home and the only home she'd ever know, lay in ruins, broken and looted. The bodies of her fellow clan members, unable to stop the onslaught of the Dragon Blooded, lay haphazardly about, dead and desecrated. This was too much, while Kaira never wanted to take part in the Shadow Keeper's peace keeping tasks, she'd always assumed that they would be there, that someone from the clan would take up the mantel, that someone else from the shadows would maintain peace. Now there was only her, the black sheep of the clan, the one who shrunk from her training and the least prepared to perform the tasks needed. Desperate Kaira began to run through the manor, searching for survivors. She was the worst trained of all of them, if she lived another clan member must have hidden and survived the decimation. Surely someone else had survived, someone who could carry on the clan's duty. Soon she began to call out to the fallen, her uncle, her brother, her father, always so good at hiding in plain site, anyone.

Eventually, in the main hall she found the body of the clan's elder. She barely recognized the old man's body, but she could still make out his staff. He was still clutching it in death, ready to parry the next blow, as if to tell the Princes of Creation, "This is wrong. What you are doing is unjust, and though I'll fail, I will still try to stop you, because someone has to." Seeing the remains of the Elder's body, still defiant in death, something deep within her shifted. Someone had to keep fighting for what her people believed in, and if not her, than no one. She was the only surviving member of the Shadowed Peacekeepers and it rested on her to continue their duty. Hers was now the task to watch from the shadows and dispense justice where it otherwise wouldn't reach, not just in Cherak, but in the whole of Creation. As this realization hit her, Kaira's world filled with a twisting malstorm of pure, brilliant light and deep drawing darkness. She felt the weight of the world on her shoulders, yet the strength to hold it up. Kaira knew what power truly was now. She'd uphold the ideals of her clan, and help usher in a new world. But first, she had to honor her clan and avenge their deaths. Taking the Elder's staff, Kaira set out on her mission.

A quick meeting with her clan's realmian informant, Didela Yerdling, let her know that the two Dragon Blooded responsible were assigned to a Wyld Hunt in the south eastern area of Creation. The older woman also warned Kaira against going on this foolhardy quest, but she could hardly know of Kaira's true nature.

And as all mortals and exalts do, Kaira eventually found herself in Nexus. There she made some inquiries and quickly found herself in the employ of Malik Silvertongue, a guild merchant prince of no small note. Taken by both her beauty and musical abilities, Malik agreed to hire Kaira to entertain the carvan as it traveled, as well as him and any guests he may have.

In the caravan Kaira The Broken Mockingbird found what she wanted most, an audience. Her days were filled with crafting music for the caravan's masses, and only the brief stops to gather information ensuring staying in the caravan put her in the direction of her clan's killers broke her bliss.

This idlic lifestyle would not last. As they approached the town of Sylic, Silvertongue could sense something was amiss. Entering they found that a merchant prince to the north had attempted a coup on Malik's trade route. Apparently he had been losing profits steadily over the past few years, and taking over the town of Sylic in a final gambit to restore some of his lost power. He extorted, stole, blackmailed, strongarmed, and bullied any money he could from the populace; even going as far as to take the offering given to the local river god. Malik, faced with the proposition of confronting a fellow guild member was paralyzed with indecision.

Kaira for her part found she couldn't stand idlelly by while people suffered, everything she'd learned from her clan went against it. She went to investigate if there was anyway her 'special' talents could solve the problem. While investigating, the river god, Shui Lian He Feeds the Great Mouth, sensed her true nature and approached her with a plea: if she could remove the cause of his distress, he would be in her debt. Kaira agreed.

Then Kaira went to Malik with a similar proposal. She could discreetly resolve the issue, if he would be ready to fill the vaccum of power and assuage the townsfolks feelings of mistrust toward the guild and outsiders. Silvertongue agreed and that night Silent Nightingale went to work for the first time.

The next morning the errant merchant prince was found dead in his bed. Apparently he'd had an allergic reaction to a rather exotic spice used in the preperation of his supper. With the situation resolved the caravan moved on, and Kaira moved closer to her vengence.

Appearance: Kaira is as close to ideal beauty as mortals and exalts are allowed to achieve. Hailing from the Northern lands she bears a slender and lithe form, with pale skin like porcelain. In direct contrast her straight hair is a deep obsidian black and goes down to just past shoulder blades. Typically she wears her hair loose with bangs framing her face, but when performing she ties it into an elegant bun. Deep violet eyes dominate an elegant face that constantly shows both compassion and a hidden mirth only she seems to be able to see. Kaira stands at roughly 5 feet 10 inchs and weight approximately 144 pounds.

Contacts:
Didela Yerdling: Long standing informant of the Shadowed Keepers Didela is the most straight forward of Kaira's contacts. Mildy disgusted with the rampant corruption in both the Realm and Cherak Didela fundamentally believed in what the Keepers did, but was at heart a pragmatist. She'd gladly provide any information she had, for a fee. She'd put her neck on the line, to a limit and for a larger fee. And she'd keep a secret because her life depended on it. While she feels sorry for what happened to Kaira's clan, she's unwilling to give Kaira any more aid than what she would have given the Keepers as a whole. Still, as long as Kaira has the money to pay for Didela's services, she'll keep providing.

Malik Silvertongue: A rather powerful and wealthy merchant prince of the Guild. As greedy as the rest of the Guild Malik distinguishes himself by being a hopeful optimist that always puts stock in the future. He's a fair and honest merchant, because people return to fair and honest merchants, usually with friends. He does what he can to aid in the prosperity of settlements along his route, because it means they're that much richer when he returns. He abhors conflict, because dead men spend no money and a person who feels welcome always returns to spend a little more. Silvertongue initially hired Kaira Broken Mockingbird to musically entertain the caravan as it travelled Creation. But after the Sylic incident he's sure she's more than she claims to be. Still now wealthier and more powerful than ever (having absorbed another Princes route and caravan) he has little to complain about.

Shui Lian He Feeds the Great Mouth: The only supernatural among Kaira's contacts Shui Lian is a river god over seeing the territory around the town of Sylic. Given the town has around 2000+ inhabitants Shui Lian is considerably more powerful than many spirits, but still a rather small fry in the overall scheme of things. He owes Kaira a favor after she helped him by saving the town of Sylic, and he's more than happy to pay her back when he gets the chance. Currently the two have a standing contract: Shui Lian ensures the swift and safe travel of Kaira and her companions as they travel by water through his land, as well as giving Kaira any useful information he might have heard on or from the the waters. In return Kaira is honor bound to come to his aid should her unique talents be needed.
