I would love to do some sort of a mad arcanist, grafting parts and items on to his fighters. I don't imagine that to work, though.

I'm looking at a Beguiler right now. How do you feel about those?

The Mad Arcanist not so much, a beguiler would be fine though.

A Mad Arcanist could, theoretically, be some sort of Wizard who focuses on Artificing, or a Psion doing the same.

My first question is how well do you know the rules of D&D 3.5? You've never played, but have you ever read any of it at all? I see you said you've played Star Wars roleplaying game, did you mean this one: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...G_Revised.jpg? If so, D&D 3.5 is extremely similar. If you played Saga Edition, that's very similar as well, although it's a bit further off in a few ways.

Before I get you into the game, I'd like you to familiarize yourself with the game a bit by doing a bit of light reading. D&D is a game you can't really play without understanding at least the basics of the rules. It can seem a bit daunting but it's not actually nearly as bad as it looks.

The rules can all be found here: http://www.d20srd.org/

You don't need to read through all of it by any means, but you should read through the basics stuff here: http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/basics...escription.htm, the skills and feats: http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/skills.htm, http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/feats.htm, and most of the other stufff under "Core Rules" (you can skip the monsters stuff)

Ignore the Epic Rules, Psionic Rules, Divine Rules and Variant Rules, only the core rules should concern you right now.

You do not have to memorize this stuff, it's easy to look up when you need it, but you should take a little bit of time and get yourself a bit familiar with it. Practice making a few characters. If you need help I'll help you out, feel free to ask questions. Once you've got an okay grasp of the game (I'm newbie friendly, we all started sometime), I'll get you into the game I'm running here.

Please keep in mind the game I'm running is a sandbox game with some extra stuff going on that isn't normal D&D, I'll make sure the difference is clarified.

You should also at some point take a little bit of time and read through the in character posting of the game itself (game is here: http://online-roleplaying.com/forums...lay.php?f=1908) to get an idea of posting etiquette and the way to post. The basic gist is that the in character threads are always in character posts and anything out of character you want to say in that thread needs to go into spoiler tags. You can say pretty much anything you like in the out of character thread. How you type out of character isn't all that important (skipping caps, emotes and lack of punctuation etc.), but in character it needs to be legible, so use proper grammar in those posts and make sure to edit them for typos and readability.

I look forward to seeing you up to speed and getting you started.

Halfling is a playable race, so yes.

If you're referring to Kender, that's the Dragonlance version of halflingis (they're basically the same thing). The only other place I've heard 'kinder' as a species is as another word for halfling, so there's no distinction.
