Edge of the Empire

Because of my decision to change both the era and ruleset for my planned Star Wars campaign, I optioned to put up a new thread in order to advertise it. I apologise if this practise is frowned upon by the Powers That Be.

Anyone who's an active follower of Star Wars RPGs knows that the license was taken up not so long ago by Fantasy Flight Games, who recently published a beta rulebook for their first Star Wars RPG: Edge of the Empire. In this, you play characters who live on the fringes of the galaxy, making their way and their living by whatever means they can manage. This is Star Wars, but with a slightly grittier edge.

I plan on running a game using the beta rules (plus the most up-to-date playtest errata, available here), but will be updating to the official rulebook upon its release. I also plan on providing the option to incorporate both the Age of Rebellion and Force & Destiny rulebooks when they become available for purchase.

I'm looking for around 4-5 players for this campaign. Because I'm not entirely confident that a lot of people on this site will even HAVE the rules, I'll also be recruiting off-site in order to make up the numbers. Regardless of where I get my players from, I would like to end up with that number.

As per the rulebook, players will begin with their own ship, and so its worth working out how the characters actually know one another, and why they're sticking together in an Empire dominated galaxy. It's also worth keeping in mind what careers each other are adopting for their characters, so that not every player chooses the same one - diversity will be hugely beneficial.

I'm willing to consider a character with the Force-Sensitive Exile specialisation, provided they buy into it normally. I won't be letting more than one player buy into it at the campaign's start, however, so players would need to discuss among themselves who gets to do it - that is, of course, assuming that anyone even WANTS to.

Post if you're interested, or have any questions related to the game. Here's hoping this nets some interest!

I'm interested in trying your game. I'm running my own TT EotE game from the beta book, but also would like the chance to play the game.

Glad to hear it. Any ideas as to a character? As no-one else has spoken up about joining yet, you're not facing any choice limitations.

Wookiee Marauder, not ruling out Force Sensitive down the road but I don't want to start there.

Always good to have a Wookiee on the team. I take it that you've played an RPG via the play-by-post format before? I'd also recommend looking over my Masquerade game, to get an idea of the kind of posts I write/like to see from my players (in terms of length/detail). If you're happy with what you see, we can discuss your character creation further.

It's been a while since I did some play-by-post, but I shouldn't have a problem with it. I'm very interested in the setting. I think we can move forward with character development.

That's good. Did you have a background in mind for your Wookiee?

What era is this game set in? The post up above says you've changed it. Is this a rebellion era game?

It's in the default Edge of the Empire era. The "change" reference is to the time when I wanted to run a Star Wars game using the D6 system but in the Old Republic time period.

Understood.

My Wookiee, Klaytoora (goes by Klay), grew up in a slave camp under the "employ" of some unsavory character. He has a vague memory of what life was like back on Kashyyyk prior to the enslavement of his race by the Empire and is angry that the empire took it from him. He never thought he'd be free Wookiee again. His owner had him doing all manner of physical labor, but mostly security and intimidation work. The thought never crossed his mind that he was their muscle. If he was the one attacking they'd be pretty much defenseless. One day his owner pushed a little too far by asking him to kill young Wookiee who proved himself inadequate, Klay instead turned on his owner. He didn't just stop with the man though, he ripped apart every thing in the room. He stopped himself before coming down on the young wookiee he refused to attack in the first place. He's been running ever since.

Okay, a good basic background. Reckon you can flesh it out with some more detail later on, after your other statistics are handled? Would give me some more to work with in terms of plot hooks and the like.

That's Step 1 handled; Step 2 is Obligation. I assume that this would relate to the fact that he murdered his owner, so maybe Bounty or Criminal, or would you want a different Obligation, maybe gained from actions undertaken after Kay's departure from Kashyyyk?

So someone affiliated with your former owner has put a bounty on Klay's head. As per the errata, starting Obligation scores for 4+ players is 10, so that's what your Wookiee will begin with.

You've already mentioned that your specialisation is Marauder, meaning you'll also be a Hired Gun. This handles Steps 3, 4 and 5, then.

Time for you to start Step 6: investing your experience points.

Looks good, though I don't have my book to hand this second to look over the stats.

Any preference to starship? Obviously this is something that would need to be discussed, but it would be good to know where each players stands. Also, what kind of campaigns do you like, or what do you like them to contain? Mine are always more story and character driven than rules-focused.

I like the customization capabilities of the YT-1300 or maybe a Firespray. I'm open to discussion. I certainly won't be the pilot, that's for sure.

I like character driven, personal stories. Ones where you truly feel like the protagonist, if that makes sense.

Hopeless: Yes! At this time, I only have Rale in my game group. I'm aiming for four players total. Did you have any character ideas in mind (that aren't the same as Rale's), and do you have the rulebook? Also, have you ever played in a play-by-post game before?

I'd recommend you look over my Masquerade game threads too, so that you can see what kind of posts I provide as a GM, and the kind of posts I expect from my players in turn. If you're happy with that, then go ahead and begin describing any character ideas you have.

Rale: I like those too, and are what I aim for in my games. Hopefully it's what I'll achieve in EotE.

Hi Church,

I saw your reply to someone else on FFG's Edge of the Empire forums (where I'm a lurker) and figured I'd register here to get some more information. I'm interested in trying EotE and I've previously participated in Play-by-post games on RPoL, but I've yet to witness people play EotE in this format.

I'm curious how you plan to handle die rolls, considering the custom die in EotE? Also, are you concerned that the rather "free-flowing" nature of EotE might be problematic in a PbP environment (or do you have plans to work around it)?

What I mean with this is the fact that there are no set initiative order covering each individual character, for instance, but players are rather encouraged to discuss and plan how they want to play through each round. In my experience, PbP games are slow - and adding a lot of OOC discussion into that will probably slow things down even further.

I don't mean to discourage you - I'm merely curious what your thoughts and plans are and I figured I should at least ask about these things before jumping in head first

Thanks!

Hey Cairo,

I welcome your questions. I plan on making use of the on-site dice roller, and the beta book's die result conversion table. Not ideal, but lacking anything better, it'll do.

Combat might be a tad slower, but in my experience players tend to frequent these forums often enough that things won't be THAT hindered by a bit of tactical discussion. Plus, if a minor delay keeps the PCs alive, then it'll be worth it!

Hope that helps.

It does, thank you. The conversion table is clumsy alright (to the point that it makes me pause) but as you say, lacking anything better... I know there are some third-party online die rollers but I haven't looked into how well they might integrate them into a PbP game.

As for characters - would you prefer official species only, or is unofficial third-party material acceptable? I guess that goes for a lot of other things as well (official only / third party material is ok), like the ship.

Also, how would you describe the "mood" you're aiming for in this game? Grimdark like Warhammer 40k; sort of serious but with touches of comedy like the Star Wars movies; outright pie-in-the-face slapstick; something else?

I'll be sticking with official materials for now, as this will be my first time running a EotE game and as a rule I only use developer given materials for the start. Makes things easier, and also means that the players have a clear limit on what everyone can and can't use.

Mood-wise, I'll be aiming more towards the films, but with an obvious dark edge that comes from being fringers dealing with the galaxy's scum and villainy. But nothing as "in your face" as the 40K universe.

I think this is sufficient for now, thanks! And with all this in mind, here's my quick concept:

A one-eyed shamanistic bountyhunter Gand (with lungs), who has his own take on the "mist worship" of his people and has been exiled from his homeplanet for such heretic practises. In other words he likes to get high on spiced-up gaseous mixtures he administers through his custom breather, which supposedly afford him visions ("you don't need two eyes to see things").

He's superstitious as one would expect and carries the shell fragment that blinded his left eye on a chain around his neck. He's not quite as humble as many other Gand, but still refers to himself as "this Gand". He's also a great cook and a horrible singer. He's not averse to technology in general, but believes the body to be sacred and thus rejects cybernetic implants. He also considers droids as smart tools and nothing more.

---

I don't have my rulebook handy right now but he's likely going to be a Gadgeteer. I'll have to double check what Survivalist was like, but it's probably too outdoorsy (unless you plan an outdoorsy game).

If you want you can give him one extra setback die to rolls involving normal vision due to being impaired, and a boost die from his vapor tripping to checks where it might make sense (knowledge, tracking?) if you think it fitting, but I can just as well play him as delusional (thinking he gains some extrasensory knowledge, when he really doesn't).

Undecided on obligation at this point. Maybe two, with one being minor addiction (5).

Great concept Cairo. If you can get yourself caught up to the same point as Klay, we'll be 1/2 the way towards the game's start. Might also be worth you guys discussing how you know one another.
