I dunno, it seems like if FATE is overfunded it'll just mean that they have more money to funnel into expansions and continuing support, and can feel more comfortable about releasing the pdf for free. In that case I suppose the backers are sort of subsidizing free pdfs for everyone else, but I feel like if you're pitching in for a FATE kickstarter then you'd be fine with that sort of thing?

zachol - that's pretty much exactly what I was thinking, but I think you said it better.

Also there might be diminishing returns on kickstarters, less enthusiasm a second time around. Probably, whatever they work on next will be partially funded by this one, so future ones (or other non-kickstarter funding efforts) can underperform a little and still work out alright.

e: I don't actually know anything about business, I'm just sort of assuming that in a lot of cases overwhelming success in a kickstarter is due to novelty, which wouldn't apply to later ones from the same company or on the same thing.

This is their third kickstarter. The first two were moderate successes, blown out of the water by this one.

In terms of time as well as money. Rich Burlew's kickstarter snowballed into an impossible nightmare in which he somehow writes a hundred pages of bonus comics despite being years behind on the main comic. He'd actually have been better off promising less bonuses and thus earning less money, because then he could finish the project entirely and move on to something else in a reasonable timeframe. Or, at least promised things he could outsource, like more OotS minis.

How is he years behind on the main comic? He doesn't have an update schedule to fall behind of.

Six months or so Fallout popped up as a free download from GOG. Today only, Duke Nukem 3D is free. Indulge your inner misogynist. Hail to the king, baby!

I still laugh my ass off at the movie theater scene.

It should come as no surprise that I'm a fan of white wolf.

Well for the first time in years there's going to be a new World of Darkness core rulebook, Mummy: the Curse. The kickstarter is running for a month, and it will end up as a POD in Drivethru RPG.

Mummy was never my favourite game, but its damned nice to actually get a new Core Rulebook and to know that the WoD isnt dead.

Without context. They're not perfect but what can I say, we both get what we pay for.

I have not, although I've entertained the idea myself.

EDIT - there is a free trial option on the homepage for the program. Might be worth playing with first.

So ten and a half hours into the 2013 and what have I learnt? It's surprisingly warm.

Finally saw the Hobbit, I thought it was fantastic. I had a huge grin on my face for the entire film.

It doesn't feel like it drags? Also that it's only half the book isn't a problem?

I'm completely okay with it being a trilogy, and that doesn't bother me. Yeah, the Azog stuff wasn't in the book at all, but adding it didn't feel like it didn't work to me, and added some more history to Thorin's character. I liked the behavior changes they made to him too, in the book he was a bit more cordial to people in general, but it worked really well for the movie the way they changed it.

It didn't feel like it dragged to me at all.

Tabletop. A tv show where Wil Wheaton plays boardgames with people. On YouTube. It's better than it sounds.

Anyway, the second half of the first season just started up.

Wow, nice. I'm watching the first show - it's the boardgame "Alhambra" which I haven't played in years but which is quite good.

I had just assumed the show was known about here. I thought it was SinbadEV who told me about it last summer or so. I bought three games after watching that show--Tsuro, Fiasco, and Gloom.

I've seen the show, found out about it from Day[9], who is pretty big in the starcraft community. He was on the first episode I think.
