Personality

Lorien is a man of action rather than words. Up until recently, 'action' has largely been defined by his vagrant, alcoholic lifestyle, but he has recently begun seeing himself as the sort of man who can make a difference in the world.

He treats the few friends he has as beloved brothers, and would gladly lay down his life for them if it came down to it. On the opposite side of the spectrum, he views those who would harm his friends as beneath contempt, barely worth the vicious sword-strokes necessary to end their miserable lives. He has little understanding of the concept 'mercy', yet. When it comes to the monstrous races, especially, he is a bit of a racist.

He's full of machismo and arrogance, but he comes off well to those who know him well enough to see past the bravado.

Background


Lorien has lived almost his entire life in the human city of Brindol. His mother Sharla was a tavern maid at the River King, a questionable establishment that catered to sailors and smugglers before it was burned to the ground a few years past. His father, Taigan Agrivail, had been one of the many defenders to perish when Brindol was besieged by a terrifying horde of goblinoids and dragonkin called the Red Hand of Doom. Said siege occurred when Lorien was only a year old, so he does not even remember what his father looked like, though others who knew him (and his mother, of course) insisted that Lorien had a very similar appearance.

Being fatherless didn't do Lorien much good growing up. His mother was far too busy trying to make ends meet to pay much attention to his upbringing (although she certainly tried), so he was able to get in an enormous amount of trouble on the streets of Brindol. Always at his side was his best friend Ril, a silver-tongued half-elf who lived just down the street. Oftentimes Ril would get Lorien into trouble, or at least that was how Lorien saw it usually. In truth, both were eager to cause a ruckus in their boring town whenever they could.

About four years ago, some fool sailor brought the Scarlet Plague to Brindol from a far-off land - fortunately for the city, the symptoms were recognized early and the dock district was successfully quarantined while the Plague ran its course, but Sharla was working a shift in the River King that particular day and got caught in the quarantine. Every priest in the city and the surrounding countryside had been summoned by the City Council to cleanse as many of the sick as possible, but there were simply too many infected, and the Plague progressed too quickly. Sharla, along with hundreds of others, did not survive. The River King and several other buildings known to have been exposed to the Plague were torched.

Lorien did not fare well emotionally once bereft of both parents. He had a lot of misdirected rage towards the various priesthoods in Brindol. While not a regular church-goer, he did visit the shrine of Bahamut on occasion up to this point. Now though, he had little faith in the gods or their servants. For that matter, he had little faith in anyone.

The next three years were the darkest of his life. He spent most of his days heavily in drink, wasting away what little inheritance he had almost immediately. Once the coin was gone, he started looking for odd jobs that would allow him to get back to drinking as quickly as possible. At first, the jobs were honest enough - haul this barrel or guard this wagon, basically anything that a strong arm could do. But gradually, he began seeing that the jobs that paid best were not necessarily the openly advertised ones. He got involved with a rough crowd. This was the only time in memory that he didn't hang around Ril much.

Eventually, Lorien's luck ran out. He and a trio of thuggish associates were caught by the city guard as they tried to empty out a merchant's storehouse in the middle of the night. His 'friends' resisted arrest, but Lorien had the good sense not to (a rare spectacle for him, and one that Ril still doesn't believe entirely since he did not witness it). So it was that Lorien ended up receiving a much lighter sentence than the others - six months in prison, and six months in service to the merchant who they had tried to steal from.
