Chapter one -OCC

Ok the beginning is up. since we're probably going to be moving into quick dialogue exchange i'd like to keep working in the gdoc and then post as we see fit.

The first chapter has no name. What i'd like to do is after the thread is closed we'll come together and come up with a good name for the Saga.

I also sort of envision this as being like a collection of linked short stories so each saga will hopefully tell a complete tale then we'll move on to the next interesting thing that happened in their lives.

I'd like to call this one "Holy Crap! Where Did the Ocean Go!!!" It has a nice epic feel to it.

Too long. For brevity's sake, we could call it "Look! No Sea!"

If we combine the two titles, it becomes like the end of those old Bullwinkle cartoons when the announcer says, "Tune in next time for 'Holy Crap! Where Did the Ocean Go!!!' or 'Look! No Sea!'"

K. My guy is posted. He's been changed up again, but I felt it was necessary. I still have a couple of tweaks I need to make, mostly in the way of languages (Goddamn you, J ). I should get that fixed in a day or so.

Ha! Ghostface speaks like six languages and signalling for "common" yet shares none with either of the other two. Beautiful.

It is a cunudrum. But apparently our elvish languages are supposed to be close enough that we can understand each other - kind of. You'll have to teach me signaling.

Damnit! I posted with the wrong account again.

Yeah. It sort of is. Gorm hasn't really been anywhere yet, so it didn't make sense to take a bunch of languages. I was going to do this thing where there was a resident orc in his father's camp who taught him how to track and hunt (he had to learn it somewhere), and maybe he taught him one of the orc tongues and maybe some orcish mythology/stories/culture/whatever. I thought it sounded too contrived, but maybe I should revisit that idea. I suppose a certain amount of metagaming to get us a common language is forgivable.

Signaling is a very simplisitic form of communication - you'd be better off learning Mirriandor (or an orcish tongue if GF wanted to teach it).

Contrived is contrived. Take Vadric, its a common trading language and is close enough to Mirriandor.

Mirriandor would probably be easiest. . .but Orcish would be fun too. I could always learn more than one language from Ghostface. . .presuming he's willing to teach me. I'd teach him one or two of mine in return

The elven tongues are quite popular. They're usually considered difficult to pronounce for humans, especially if they're coming from a more guttural language like Derbolg. Vadric is a more streamlined, pragmatic branch of the elven language tree with influences from every culture the Vadrii have come in contact with.

For clarification, i'm not against Gorm learning one of the orcish tongues, what i am against is relegating a rather uncommon occurrence (A Heshenai being far from their territory, and being welcomed by the Derbolg) to a simple device for convenience. Invest some color into that event (the Heshenai in question was exiled from his lands, he was an escaped slave, a survivor of the Pheoni gladiator pits who won his freedom, a thrall of the man your father killed who swore fealty to him) - give him a name, a background and then make it significant to Gorm and i'll be happy.

Lies! You won't be happy until we can't communicate at all!

Wait, that doesn't sound right.

Well, the point is moo now (like the opinion of a cow--who cares?). It was just supposed to be a device for getting us communicating anyway. I didn't have the points for a third language, and my second (Vadric) will function for now with Ghostface's Mirriandor. So crisis solved as far as I'm concerned. Eventually, I'd like to take one of the orc dialects, but we can jump off that bridge when we get to it.

Besides, I don't think J's intent is to keep us from communicating. I mean, that would be like putting us in a ship and taking away the ocean! Hang on...

I like the captain's final moments, J. I think it helps explain as you mentioned in the google doc that the captain has chosen the manner of his death rather than live no longer able to truly be a Derbolg.
