Discovering Opportunities

--This game was inspired by My Fellow Gamers "The Colonists" campaign. It was not meant to be a rip-off of the campaign idea, rather it will focus on developing the new land - think of it as Simcity with D&D.--

A new land was recently discovered by a fishing ship while making it's run deep in the Pelonic Ocean. Not being on any map, the vessel quickly surveyed the land from afar before returning with their haul to the mainland. Rumors of the uninhabited land echoed throughout the civilized world almost instantly.

The leaders of man, dwarf, elf, halfing, and gnome came together to discuss this new land. It was agreed that the resources of the new land should be secured before the sinister creatures caught word of it. Afterall, the natural resources of the land and it's strategic location deep in the Pelonic Ocean would make it a perfect staging point for just about any war.

Within a week a small vessel was dispatched with enough supplies to setup a settlement on the coast. Leading this voyage are special representatives who will act as a Council in this new nation rather than having a monarchy that currently exists everywhere else in the world.

---

This campaign is going to have alot of special rules to say the least. Once I have players, I will get the forum created and start posting all the rules and special information that is needed.

Essentially you each are going to be a leader of this settlement and have to make some really serious decisions on how the land is developed. There will be alot of unforeseen difficulties along the way. But as the settlement develops into a nation, your power and prestige will go with it.

But you will also be bound by laws and policy from the mainland...

---

I will be accepting 5 players for this who will act as members of the leadership council. As the settlement grows and management becomes difficult, additional players will be brought in to act as leaders as well.
Elections will be held for specific responsibilities as time goes by...and how you rule will determine the extent of your elected power.

After the players are selected and the forum is created, I will need a week or two to get all the information posted, so please be patient if you are accepted into the game.

Also note that this is a custom campaign world. Players will be provided with all the needed information before the campaign starts.

EDIT:

System: D&D 3.5 edition.

Ooooh. This sounds like one of the ideas I've always had floating around but haven't been able to implement.

Are you planning on having a duality between management and the leader being a character themselves? Or will it be more detached?

The players will be a leadership council that rules over the settlement. 5 members sit on the council. A majority vote by the council is required for most things to pass, certain requests will require a unanimous vote by the council. There will also be a few attachments to the council to ensure things run smoothly.

Things will get interesting if the players start bickering because they'll need support of at least 2 other council members to get things done officially. It makes for some really crazy council meetings.

Ooooooh, SimCity + D&D = FTW.

This is one of those ideas I've always loved to do as well. You can count me in, no matter how it ends up playing out.

What level, what templates/monster races, etc.?

I'm a freak for the unusual characters. Putting a good monster (Or reformed/outcast) on the council would certainly be contriversial, but would also help with knowledge of matters like threat assessment.

ETA: This might be the first time the Stronghold Builder's Guide is useful!

I'm still interested in how the character portion will play out. I'm all for debates, discussions, and carefully paid assassins to get things done, but will we still be playing characters? Fighting monsters and leveling up?

Setzer - the level of the council members will probably be starting at 5. I may go as high as 7, but I doubt it. Templates/Monster races I'm not too sure about at this moment. I'd prefer to keep it mostly to the core races/classes, but I might be willing to make exceptions. I'm reading the stronghold guide right now to see if it is useful for this campaign.

Lune - yes you will be playing characters. About 75% of the campaign will be developing the nation (which will grant you xp and wealth if you do it right), but the other 25% will involve combative situations.

You can count me in.

I have a character from a defunct game on these boards that would fit in just fine with this kind of thing. He is a Dwarvin Wizard (the only I have ever tried to play) and would certainly be looking for a place to make a name for himself without having to constantly bump his head against his dwarvin kin's biases.

Hargrim, Dwarvin Wizard 5th, N-G
4'7"
Black Hair
Black Eyes
Light Brown Skin
Weight 145

As much as I'd love to play, until the exam fiesta is over I'm just too busy to play in another game

Good luck with your game Christine. Idea behind it looks cool...

I would say we should exchange ideas but you're on the waiting list for the Colonists game.....

Dibs!

It looks like this game will be a lot more focused on RP and problem solving than combat and game mechanics, which is exactly what I've been needing more of lately. I'm guessing each of the five PCs must be of one of the races listed in the original post?

I could be interested as well, but I can wait til alliances are made. Hopefully alliances are made with some of the more exotic races, or savage species. So I'll wait for the moment, and hope for an alliance to spring up soon with something more ... savage .
