My PC is, officially, dead, having been fully corrupted by the virus that PC World promised me was gone. Under normal circumstances I would be throwing one hell of a hissy fit, but -- thankfully -- I managed to salvage all documents relating to Rokugan before things went sour.

The downside is that the last seventh of my post wasn't saved (I had to draw up a prior version of the Word document), but I have been working the last hour to get the post completed and put up onto the site. I'm almost done, but given that the time is now 0051 and I've yet to sleep in the past 26 hours, I'm going to be turning in for the night.

My friend has left me to house-sit for him over the next two days, so I will have ample opportunity to finish the post and get the game moving (thanks to his internet connection and virus-free computer); given the post's current status, I can promise that this will happen tomorrow, either in the morning or in the afternoon.

Again, thank you all for being patient. I look forward to having the first story begin on the morrow.

No problem, pc's are designed to die at inappropriate times. If I was to make one criticism it would be that you trusted pc world to have done something competently and thus were inevitably betrayed. You are however only human ( I assume) and therefore betrayal by pc world is part of lifes inevitable learning curve and you shall emerge stronger for it. Condolences for your loss. Looking forward to the post.

A note regarding the post that I forgot to add.

The fishing village was agreed upon as a place to meet by both the Unicorn and Phoenix Clans not only because it's neutral territory (owned by the Cranes), but also because the samurai responsible for convicting Moto Teiko is the governor's own son.

Edit!: I did, in fact, mention this in my post, but it's worth restating anyways.

Utaku katsumi will post in dark orchid if there are no objections. It seems appropriate to stick to clan colors whenever possible to avoid confusion.

Also: is there going to be a minimum post length to keep in mind?

Isawa Kaero will be posting in red, a bit harsh but Phoenix colours none the less.

*edit make that Orange then so as not to screw up Abidingdude's eyes, and that blue is is extremely hard to read

I will post in bright green. If it is possible to avoid pure red and this blue, I would appreciate it as they mess with my eyes something severe.

I am, as a rule, against establishing a set number of words per post; rather, I recommend instead focusing on providing as much detail as seems fitting based upon the current IC circumstances.

Avoid one-liners, even when in combat. I hate them, and tend to avoid taking on players who make constant use of them. Lack of description hinders the detailing of the game world, makes it seem much more generic, and can break the mood somewhat, particularly if you're the only person doing it. Finally, I've yet to come to know a player character suitably enough to like them whenever they are detailed through such minor description; the same is true of NPCs.

Hope that helps.

Also, since I will be striving to not speak for any of your characters, I will be making use of all available colours, much like I did in my opening post.

Hardly a clan color, but Cyan is easy to read against the brown backdrop.

Also- and I may have just missed this, but the governor's palace is also where the funeral will be held, correct?

Kenjiro will be posting in yellow because elpresidente has stolen gold, the colour of the honourable Lion.

A dual? So early in the game?

Well, players will be players, and a bit of bloody violence helps to stir me from my morning haze. Let the steel fly!

Sorry, I missed this question.

The funeral has already happened -- the burning of a body traditionally takes place 4 days after the departed's death -- but Jun'ai's family (her father's immediate ancestry, not the entire Clan Family) customarily journey to the site of their kin's death in order to pay respects at the Bon Festival. This is a different tradition from the norm, which, if I recall correctly, requires family members to erect a shrine or place of prayer within their homes and temples, and set forth special lights over the lakes to help direct the souls of the dead.

I'll need to confirm the above details by looking through my copy of The Great Clans, however.

I hope that answers your questions.

Solar, will you also be posting your character's activities in the fishing village, and his reaction to the opening post's conclusion? If so, are you waiting for the others to post, or is such a second-parter impending?

To the peasant boy and his father? I was just getting up to speed with the contents of the previous posts, I thought doing something on the meeting with Shigeru would be a good way of showing Kenjiro's motivations. I was going to do anther post, but I had to head out early, so I'll get on that.

Was just wondering whether or not you were waiting on a reply from Shigeru before you got another post up. Not to worry: your back-post detailing your response to the Magistrate, and Katsumi's talk with her servant, were just the kind of things I was after.

A question for each of you that might know more of Rokugan's culture than I do:

The core rulebook describes the Bon festival as the time Rokugani revere their dead ancestors, but gives little other information. What can we expect during this festival?

Information concerning the Bon Festival can be found in the Lion Clan's section of The Great Clans sourcebook. I was going to copy the excerpt up into this forum for the benefit of those who do not have that book at a later time (with my next Gamemaster post), but I'll get it up now for your reading pleasure:

"Aside from a few special cases like the Imperial line and the major clan and family founders, most ancestral veneration takes place in the home. However, there is one noteworthy exception: the Bon Festival. Performed on the 28th Day of the Month of the Dog, the Bon Festival is dedicated to honour the dead of the last year, and aside from a few special cases (like the city of Ryoko Owari) is celebrated in a fairly uniform fashion by all clans.

During the Bon Festival, extended families will gather at their primary holding, where a special altar is erected with a spirit tablet that represents the ancestors of the entire extended family. After dark, each member of the family bears coloured paper lanterns to the site where the ashes of their ancestors are interred. Similar lanterns are placed outside the house and all over town to guide the worshippers on their way. A ceremonial meal is presented to the ancestors at their grave, and the local shugenja and monks travel about performing a slow ceremonial festival dance at each local house. At the close of the evening, additional paper lanterns are placed on small boats in the nearest lake or river -- one for each family member who had died within the last year. This is believed to help guide the spirits to the afterlife, ensuring they do not become angry ghosts."

Hope that helps.

Ah, ok. So for our characters, being away from their own Clan holdings, we wouldn't necessarily participate in the festival?

That depends. You have a shugenja and a monk, so both might feel obliged to play a part in the festivities (their choice, really); the Scorpion, of course, is there for the express purpose of participation in the Bon Festival (his wife, his father-in-law, and that Phoenix's father have an odd custom of performing the Bon Festival at the location of the most recently passed family member's site of demise, rather than do it at their own household).

Also, a note for you all: please ensure that all future questions be asked in this thread and not through Private Messaging, unless the questions are of a personal, secretive nature. Any questions relating to your characters that you don't want anyone to know of can also be asked via your Character Threads. Posting questions in either of the above locations helps to prevent my Inbox from (again) rapidly filling to the brim.

Thanks!

Greetings all - hello again to those of you from Dresden Files, and hello to those of you I've not encountered before. If all proceeds as planned I should have a character in this game at some point in the future, but since I wasn't around when this game was first discussed I was wondering if someone could fill me in on the limitations and requirements for character creation, and anything else I might need to know?

Thanks!

Hey Chev, welcome to the game.

There aren't really any limitations (at least, none that I recall), beyond your not being allowed to play as a member of the Spider Clan. I'd also rather that you didn't attempt to make a ronin, as their inclusion in my campaign, as planned, would be difficult. Otherwise, I'd merely recommend trying to avoid making a character who duplicates one of the PCs already in existance*. As always, you should feel free to contact me with any questions you might have, either via this thread, the forum's Private Message application, or even through e-mail.

The game itself is very fresh off the ground, so you're not missing much. In the interest of not overburdening myself, however, I will be looking to start you and Haraphen off in a separate place, as two characters who knew one another before the story's beginning. This allows you both the chance to get used to the game and its mechanics; then, later on, I can begin working to unite the two character groups.

As previously mentioned, of course, individual storylines and smaller group stories are also possible, so we're in no great rush to get everyone together immediately.

Do you have any specific questions that you'd like immediately answered?

*We have a Lion and Scorpion bushi, a Phoenix and Dragon shugenja, a Four Temples monk, and a Unicorn courtier.

Is it common to go 4 days with no posts from anyone in PbP games?

Foxtrot - looks like you're waiting on Vortigern, who said he was travelling until further notice, and the others are waiting on your characters finishing up the scene where you meet and arriving in the village proper. Unless I've got very confused, which is possible.

Also, yes, quite common, but it depends on game size and what everyone is doing irl. In my experience things tend to switch up a lot, there'll be times of lots of activity and times of not much. Also a bit seasonal - in summer, when people tend to take vacations and so on, it's quieter.

Copper - have a few things to run by you, will send them in a PM.

It's as Cheveyo said.

Also, I'd like to note that Vortigern still needs to get some things posted up in his character thread before he posts in the game. These things were requested previously, but both he and I appear to have forgotten about them.

Vortigern: please don't post before you submit the requested information.

But on that note, is there any reason why AbidingDude hasn't posted yet? (Apologies to the player if he has, in fact, given a prior reason that I have overlooked.)

I have not. I was waiting for Vortigern's post, as I'm supposed to be his escort, and would be following his lead at both locations. I had forgotten about the whole 'he's traveling, so if we are not waiting for him, but assuming generic action until his return, I'd be willing to put something to that effect (the following his lead) into the IC post.
