Coming Up For Air

Don't you hate it when real life gets in the way?

Some of the folks here might remember from way back when at 3ebb. Some folks might even have seen me post once or twice in the past 5 years.

So when I saw so many familiar faces still posting over here, I figured it was about time to say hi again.

What happened to ol' JK? Why did I disappear in a puff of smoke? My tale is one fraught with tragedy and drama, but to sum it up, school has been a bitch, and internship even moreso. 24 hour shifts and working most weekends do not make for a lifestyle that leaves much room for gamin', and 80-hour weeks don't leave you much sanity or energy to work with.

But as the weather changes from a pleasant spring to "hot damnit's hot" summer, internship is finally, mercifully coming to an end. And in anticipation of being treated like a person again at work, some of my old friends from way back when are getting in touch with me again.

"Yo, you wanna try M&M 3e?" "Hey, have you played Pathfinder?" "Burning Empires looks pretty good."

I start looking around again, poking some of my old stomping grounds on the internet, and what the-? D&D 5e is already coming out? I never even got to play 4e! I can't quite figure out who owns the Traveler license at the moment, but it looks like Green Ronin has a DC Comics license or something? It's enough to make an old man's head spin. How's a guy supposed to get back into gamin'?

... oh, yeah. And hi again, everyone

Hi!

Does that mean you're moving into residency?

5E is at least a year off, and grumblings put it at the end of 2003/beginning of 2004 so they can get the 40th anniversary to do some marketing work for them.

Traveler, I think, is still owned by Mongoose. Or, at least they still have their version of it up for sale.

Green Ronin does have the DC license (but I think they've only got one book left to make with it) and Margaret Weis has the Marvel license (that book, Marvel Heroic Roleplaying, is still very much a new book).

Yeah, at long last. Two years where they practically treat you like you're people.

And huh, interesting. The way I was hearing about 5e, it was like it was right around the corner. Thanks for the update, man.

Yeah, Family Medicine. Which also means less time stuck in a hospital come August!

Heya, JK! Welcome back(ish). I consider you were never really gone just posting less frequently like LeadPal. I'm glad things are going well for you.

Have you been doing any kind of PC gaming lately? What about F2F groups?

PC Gaming, surprisingly yes. I bought the Humble Indie Bundle V a few weeks ago, and really got into Bastion and Psychonauts.

F2F gaming... my local buddies are typically quite erratic (having already gone through a few sessions of OWOD Vampire and a short-lived Pathfinder adventure), but we've settled into a d20^ game that came pretty much off the cuff and is slowly turning into a more established game. It was originally a spy spoof (ala Archer), which is slowly turning into a more general spoof of popular media between the late 60s to early 80s, set in the year 19XX (pronounced "Nineteen Exity-Ex").

Your F2F group has always sounded like an interesting one. Its too bad we don't live closer.

Have you played any of the games that recently went free to play? DC Universe Online, Champions, City of Heroes? Or League of Legends (which has always been F2P)? Checked out Diablo 3 yet?

My son and I are seriously considering doing a web video show about gaming focusing mostly on League of Legends. He is quiet the prodigy.

I have not been able to play any of the online games as of late. I know far too well that if I started one, that'd be all she wrote for at least the next month. While I'm getting more free time, it's still not enough to get addicted to one of those

I wouldn't count any of the games I listed as addictive, but then I don't really have an addictive personality. I think most people consider MMOs addictive but DCUO, Champions and CoH are kinda exceptions to that as they were built to allow people to jump in, play, jump out at any interval. LoL is meant to be taken in bite sized chunks.

So your more into the RPG adventure genre?

These days, yeah. Something I can pick up and play for a half hour or hour at a time. Anything that demands a greater portion of my time at any given sit-down is hard to fit in.

Thankya kindly. And just had my first few days of "normal" residency. Slept til a decent hour, ate breakfast, was treated like a human being... life is good!

Is that the itch that I have been having? I was going to get it checked out. Gosh, I'm glad it was something as benign as this.

As much as I may be attracted to his feminine wiles, I'm still not positive that he is my type.

Oh wow. Hi JK!

Apparently Marvel Heroic Roleplaying is actually pretty neat? I'm not sure, haven't tried it.
