I think Catherine (my character's name) should already be on board. While her recruitment scene would be fun, considering that she has six levels of buccaneer at game start, she needs it from somewhere, and I doubt she would have done much boat switching. Maybe a flash-back could be arranged at some point.

And like I said previously (ignoring Darius' hilarious interjection ), she'll be navigator. And she'll be pretty good at it. She's got lots of maps, 3 compasses, a sextant, a spyglass, a pocketwatch, good intelligence, good knowledge (history and geography), etc.

Also, everyone knows her as Cathero (like I said, would be an interesting recruitment scene).

Good, I'm glad someone took the Navigator position right off.

Maps (charts actually. Maps are land, charts are sea.) and navigation logs are important. Indeed, capturing ships and getting their charts and logs is among the most vital aspects of piracy.

Charts and logs are hard to come by, and every navigator keeps vigorous logs of where they've been and when, and how they approached, and the markings for shoals and safe approaches. When a navigator can get his hands on someone else's charts, a whole new area of operations opens up. Say you want to raid the city of Maracaibo, but you don't have a chart of the safe approaches to the area. You know vaguely where it is, but vagueness is bad when it comes to potentially running aground and killing the whole crew. So, capturing that Spanish gold carrier is wonderful. But if it also has a detailed log and chart describing the hidden approaches and safe channels to Maracaibo, your haul has just become astronomically larger than just the gold stored onboard the Spanish ship.

Edit - Belkar ftw!

Alright, I'm switching my build to ranger if there is no objection, although I'll need a different name for the class to not feel like a dork. Merc, besides no spellcasting is anything about the ranger different in this game?

Merc, I got 20 "Area Maps", which I'm assuming will be a collection of 5 or so maps of the world and its continents at various scales, and 15 charts of particular locations off the Spanish Main. If you think I need more as a Navigator, let me know. Also, I'm not picking out where the charts are of yet. Should I? Or do you wanna let me know which places I have charts of?

Also, I realize a marine chronometer isn't listed as an item (and technically it wouldn't really be prevalent yet. The first fully functioning marine chronometer will be presented in France several months after the campaign start date), but I think it's worth looking into. Cost will be the same as a water clock, but it uses pendulums and winding to work.

It might become important if you lose sight of land for too long a time.

That should be fine to start.

I'll give you two options. Either you can pick now, or you can hold them as undesignated and then when a situation comes up you can roll at Knowledge or Profession Sailor check against a DC to see if you actually have that chart.

Rangers will be called Corsairs, and will have Hunter's Bond and Spellcasting abilities removed as class traits.

The latter. Much simpler as far as I'm concerned.

Argles, I can't find a picture of a nervous or jittery or scared pirate. I'm not even bothering looking for a woman pirate dressed as a man. I can make do with a dude. But I need someone with no confidence, and it seems that no matter what adjective I put in front of pirate in Google, I will only get confident pirates. Yar.

I forgot something important with the Defense Bonus that affects your character EC. Defense Bonus OR bonus from Armor, not both. It's my fault for forgetting to write the rule into the description.

Anyone set their eyes on being the crew's doctor?
Dibs! I was actually thinking that about seven posts before you posted it. Damn, I miss one day of posting and I'm three pages behind? Man. Besides, I would totally rock as a doctor (and cook!). "Arrr! Yer 'and be falling off! 'ave a 'ook! 'and soup tonite, boys!"

Ah, okay, I'll just take off the armour then. It's a far worse deal.

You need me to send you a copy of the sheet without the armour?

Does it always apply, or does it go away for touch or flat-footed AC or something?

I like this for my picture. Also, I'm too lazy to find a better one.

Always applies. It's like a natural armor.

Doom - tree isn't on now, but he and I im-ed earlier, and he thinks he's pretty set on the ranger class with ranks in heal to be the ship's doctor and wilderness expert.

I know it's not great, EC, but here's an old picture of Anne Bonny

Guybrush?

Cathero seems to be from one of those silly pirate settings, hmm?
Very interesting to see how he handles things.

I think (s)he'll be very out of place. And die soon. I'm hoping for a whole Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass (except substitute coward for moron) gimmick, but that kinda shit doesn't work in settings with more malicious characters. Usually. I guess when Ash goes to 'visit' Catherine, we'll see who survives.

It'll help that she apparently pulls her weight as a navigator and isn't "useless and weak."
His misogyny stems from past trauma, and isn't "enjoys cruelty" so much as "bottomless illogical hate."

Also, according to my twitter buddy (who gave me the google search that produced the image) Guybrush is the name of the guy in the picture? So that's good to know. Who the hell is he?

Yeah, I think I'll just be keeping this picture. It looks like a guy, but if you look for it, you could see it as a girl dressing as a guy, and he's writing. I bought 500 sheets of paper. I think a picture of Cathero writing is a good idea.

If you use a picture of Guybrush Threepwood for your character, you are pretty much obligated to say 'How appropriate - you fight like a cow!' at least once in every single combat.

Remember that it's not funny if Merc doesn't include the setup: "You fight like a dairy farmer."

I don't have a given ship role in mind for Emilio, but given that I'm planning on making him a social rogue, "diplomat" might not be too far of a stretch.

Also: Emilio will have ranks in knowledge: religion. I figure the ship might as well have some sort of religious presence.
