Nathan "L'intangible" Bellier

Nathan “L'intangible” Bellier

The times the Widow's cook, Nathan, has been seen laughing can be counted on Ash's fingers. Often brooding and keeping to himself, he seems preoccupied and gazing at the horizon as if in thought when he's not on duty. Rare are the times when the man drinks with the rest of the crew, almost exclusively after successful battles...

Few people have tried to include Nathan and engage him further, his demeanor quenching any attempt. His martial expertise prevents most from picking fights with him as well. Inferior in strength only to the newest member of the crew, Nathan's body is muscled from top to bottom. Nathan steels every muscle of his body in daily exercises before sunrise and after sunset. During fights it sometimes seems as if he is flying and his punches and kicks are able to down grown men.

Nathan keeps his head and face clean shaven at all times. His eye brows are dark and bushy, his nose slightly crooked. Apart from a loose shirt and breeches, Nathan's only adornment is a thick leather collar that he never takes off. Glittering on his belt are several shuriken, the only weapons he usually carries.

Nathan’s past is a mystery to most of the crew of La Buse’s ship and not one of them in their right mind would dare ask him about it. There are rather bloody stories of those who did in the past. While no one knows the truth there are persistent rumors about the young man:

His name is rumored to be his real name, the name of a rather wealthy merchant family from Brest, a city on the coast of France. Unlike many pirates who adopt a different name it is said he wants those facing him to know exactly who he is. It’s rumored he’s after those who, when he was still a young boy, raided a merchant vessel in the Indian Ocean. His father captained this vessel and was on his way to sign a major contract in the far, far east. Most of the crew as well as his father were supposedly killed by the raiders. The rest, including Nathan himself, were sold into slavery.

Somehow the French merchant’s son found his way back to Europe after many years had passed and Nathan had acquired skills that he aspired to hone to perfection: the unarmed fighting skills of eastern warriors. It was rumored that they were able of great feats of acrobatics and unarmed combat – something that La Buse’s crew got to witness after about a year that Nathan was on the Crimson Widow. The quiet bald man had ‘applied’ to become a member of the crew in the city of Basse-Terre on Guadeloupe. After a long talk in the captain’s cabin he joined as the cook’s apprentice, but on some sort of probation. His cooking skill and knowledge of fruit and vegetables and the appropriate composition of ‘sea-worthy’ food soon had him switch roles with the former cook.
Nathan kept to himself at this time, rarely talking with the other crew members. Only after half a year when he started reading the books La Buse owned and studying maps and old scrolls did he also start mingling with the crew, rare occasions still. Another role he strove to excel in was that of the lookout. Often staying in the 'Crow's' nest for long times, he scanned the horizons constantly and reliably.

Nathan Bellier earned his nickname only later when he started battling among his fellows. Fearless and seemingly supernaturally quick, the strong man effortlessly dodged missiles and brought soldiers down with a single blow of his fist. Most weapons failed to touch and seemed to strike right through him – as if he were no more than a insubstantial being, l'intagible.
