Question - Gral said something about a bonus 1st level feat “that we all decided on”. (I may be paraphrasing, I don’t know… I don’t have it in front of me right now.) So did we all (you all) decide on a particular feat or type of feat that everybody gets? Or...what?

Seriously, I have a paper character sheet that is almost done. But I really don’t see me getting the lovely on-line sheet in the Stable done any time soon. I’d rather focus on writing up her description and background, and so getting ready to meet up at the tavern. Is that ok with everyone? I swear I’ll get the sheet completed eventually.

So how are we going to meet? Here is where I am at the moment with Zin. She’s there at the tavern because she got a letter instructing her to show up there for “training”. She’s been there a week and nothing has happened. It’s probably not going to happen. Unless we make it happen.

So, the bonus feat is just pick any feat you like from the feats listed in the customization section (page 165 or so). No restriction on what to take other than the regular pre-reqs for the feat you want (only a few have prerequisites).

I'm fine with the sheet in the stable not being done, unless you happen to be playing a paladin of course .

On meeting at the tavern, we can know each other or not depending on what you all think is good. The stock adventure hook is that their dwarf patron and friend, Gundren Rockseeker, hires them to escort a wagon to Phandalin. Gundren has gone ahead with a warrior, Sildar Hallwinter, to attend to business in the town while the characters follow with the supplies. So we can use that or change it to better meet what would interest the individual characters.

I think it’s a little more fun if we don’t know each other. But it might be more difficult to get things rolling on to the actual adventure that way. It's up to you guys.

Okay that's as good as I can be bothered making the number part of the character sheet work. Don't make any sense to me, so if someone (Gral) can take a look (Gral) at it and point out (Gral) any fixes that need to be fixed.

That's a neat approach to getting things done, itches.

On meeting up: Jun might be there looking for a job. A little guard duty (or let's say scouting duty) could be something he does to earn a penny here or there.
Knowing or not knowing each other: Hm. We could also do it in such a way, that our characters each know one other character - but not the other two. But IF we know each other, then we need to work on a little backstory. Which would take time. And I only have 12 days until my offline time... so maybe we'd better just start off not knowing each other or having met briefly before. I think I'd prefer having met briefly before (ie we know each other's names, know that we're up for the same job, that sort of thing).

Since his turn to good, Name has mostly been wondering about making a nuisance of himself, sticking his nose in anywhere he thinks could use the help. If Jun has done some guarding or scouting for some traders or farmstead, he might have encountered Name fighting the same thing. Not enough to be friends, but enough to recognise each other and know that the other one is competent.

So, I updated your character sheet itches. I added some stuff but I also changed your abilities - I put the +1 ability increase to Strength instead of Dexterity, as it pushes strength to 16 which is a +3 mod, while Dexterity 9 is the same as Dexterity 8 (-1 mod). If you really want to push your Dexterity to 10, you can do that at 4th level with your ability increase.

Also, you should think about weapons and armor. Right now you are listed as Chain Shirt and Long Sword. Chain Shirt is only AC13 and it adds your dexterity bonus (which is -1) meaning you come up with AC12 which is pretty darn bad. If you are planning on fighting with a one handed weapon, I'd say definitely go for a shield as well (+2 AC). And if you aren't heart set on Chain Shirt, go with Chain Mail instead. It is a base AC of 16 and it completely ignores your dexterity modifier (both positive and negative).

And background, which will give you two skills and two tools. Based on his past, Criminal is certainly an option though maybe you want to swap out thieves' tools for something else as he doesn't seem like a breaking and entering sort. Then again, maybe he was, I don't really know. Folk Hero could also be appropriate, given his do-gooding nature. The other thing I'm thinking is something akin to the Pirate version of Sailor, but from a land perspective. It would require a little work but it could be neat of crooks were scared of him because of his ruthless past.

Next level you get a fighting style, which you really ought to look at now as it will inform your choice of weapon (and/or shield). Protection is really useful in practice, but really it's whatever you like best.

Ah I fucked up the armour thing, for some reason I thought I had a positive dex mod when I picked it up. I'll fix that. But I'm sticking with the one sword, using it two handed for the damage bonus.

But the good news is it worked. Guys! If you just say Gral's name a lot he makes your character for you! You've gotta try it!

Alright, I called his background "Survivalist" and am not quite happy with that. But it's just a name - other than that I used more or less what you suggested, Gral.

Excellent! I am thinking that maybe one of us knows Gundren and he plans on collecting some folks to help guard the supply caravan. If we say that Jun knows Paladin, then I'll say Silas was the one hired by Gundren. Maybe he knows Zinnia, and from local gossip he's heard that Paladin is a staunch warrior. Maybe Silas isn't sure about approaching Paladin directly so he finds out who his buddies are and approaches Jun about the two of them doing a job.

Oh, and the shield thing - I'm just thinking that if you are planning on using a longsword (which can be wielded one handed or two handed) there is no reason to not bring a shield along. You only need to use it if you are desperate.

Okay doing some reading into it and I hate background. You get two things, race and class to mix together and make a character. Throwing a third one on top is too much. When I first read about them I thought they were optional packages to make characters fast - but they're built into the system.

If you want to create a unique character you have to make a new background. That's just ... no. Nope. Not doing it.

Also are Feats still a thing? If not my character is as good as it's going to get.

I asked the Feat question already and know the answer so I'll chime in - You get a first level bonus feat, unless you're human and then you get 2.

Zin is friendly and hangs out in the common room or some other common area a lot, so it's possible she knows Silas or any of the group really. She has been there for a while with nothing to do. She spends her time playing games of chance with other loiterers (but never for significant sums of money), sitting down by the river sometimes fishing, and, when she knows she is quite alone, practicing her spells.

Speaking of spells, I still have to work on those...

I forgot to mention! One of the character traits for Name is he's a fisher. Loves fishing. Picture a Paladin striding into town, gleaming armour, mighty sword and a fishing pole poking out of his bag.

@Background: Just make up what suits you.

@Feats: No bonus feats around unless it says so in your class description.
