New D&D Next playtest packet is here

So yeah, a day late and all that but still:

I'm downloading now, so I have no idea what things look like.
How many deaths shall serve to break at last
This heritage which wraps me in the grey
Apparel of ghosts?

There's a document in there that lays out the big changes.

They've added some options for healing.

They've tweaked some of the numbers.

The monster stat blocks are changed a bit. People keep saying they look like 2nd Edition, but that's horseshit. There are definite elements of 4E in the monster presentation, which is mostly a good thing.

There are character creation rules, which are pretty self-explanatory.

Opportunity attacks are back, but are only triggered by movement, and that can be negated if the mover uses his action to Disengage.

Kind of a lot of different "lores."
This discussion is happening elsewhere, but apparently the fighter's "Glancing Blow" (the replacement for that str damage on a miss ability) is mostly useless, on account of there being very few enemies you'd miss if you rolled 10+.
Specialties seem odd. Are these just preselected feats (that we could change)? For example, the "Magic-User" specialty is kind of dumb for a wizard to take, they probably don't need more minor spells. Why not let them take the familiar feat at 1st level instead?
Sleepy cat is sleepy.

Preselected feats and skills, yeah. I kind of like the idea. But one of the problems being noted is that a cleric without the Healer specialty is going to get a lot of grief. That strikes me as crap, as I've played games of every pre-4E edition of D&D without a healer and they were all fun, so the common misconception of "forcing someone to play a healer" has always been garbage in my experience.

Plus, there are people that actually like that. I played TTRPGs and a few MMOs with one guy where every character he ever played was built for healing support. He wasn't a fan of 4E because it made his favorite playstyle completely unnecessary.

Like you said Merc, some people like to play the healer. Hell, I occasionally do too, why do you think I built Adamant?
