I like your setting so far, it is quite interesting to me the more I hear of it.

Right now I'm considering the second or third son of a Duke or Baron, if you are amiable. As a noninheriting son his ambition would be to make his fortune on his own, anyway he could, and not just be another hanger-on member of his family lineage.

Perhaps a fierce knight-errant sellsword by day who pursues those quite dark and mysterious magical mysteries by night?

Yes, that sounds good.
Would you prefer someone who is just past the age of majority, or an older, more established son?
Would you prefer that he have access to a large or small fortune? Or that he has either cut himself off, or been cut off, from the family fortune?
Would you prefer military experience, private training, self training, or a combination of the above?
Now for magic you would have a few choices:
First, you could be an innate caster who is limited to a single college of magic. This would allow a high degree of specialization.
Second, you could have access to several colleges. This would mean a lesser amount of starting power, with a greater degree of diversity possible.
Third, you could study the Dark Arts, such as demonology. This is not spell casting so much as pact magic. It is far more limited in variety, but has it's own advantages.

I'm imagining someone approximately 25ish in age.

I would imagine that he still is an acknowledged and accepted member of the family, and thus of some means... but he is not the heir, and does not have full control over the family fortune. That is why he wants to make his own, by whatever means he can. He wants independence and his own title one day.

I see him as having extensive private martial training from genuine knight-type tutors during his childhood and being knighted when he came of age. Likely he volunteers to be one of the knights that fulfills his father's yearly troop obligations more often than not, to get exposure at court and direct military experience/networking. As a younger knight of noble blood he is eager to prove himself and perhaps be recognized by the crown. When he is not in direct service, in his father's name, he seeks adventure/fortune as a mercenary. So I see him as having military experience, but not constantly being obliged to it, he serves when his father is obliged to provide troops and he feels like going.

The mercenary work would be the point of contention with his family. They think that is unseemly, but for now are tolerating it.

As for magic, the demonology and pact magic is /exactly/ what I had in mind. This is something he has started pursueing with greater and greater interest as his ambition to make his fortune and name have grown both greater and more frustrated with his mixed successes. This would be something he would keep to himself, or if a member of a cult-like group, secret to the cult etc. Especially with the general lack of belief in this, he would be afraid of this getting public and what the church reaction would be.

Comments/thoughts?

Excellent. Any further questions you have I'll eagerly answer. I'll start working on a background writeup.

Regarding your weapons training:
The standard issue weapon of the army is a bronze headed long spear. Other common weapons used in the military include Leather shields used with either a spear, a broadsword, or a short sword. Javelins are the most common ranged weapon used, although there are some archers (Bows are not very common due to a scarcity of good bow making woods, such as yew). Other weapons used (not usualy by the military) include Axe, mace, Knife, Polearm, Staff, and Sling.

Which weapons would you like to be proficient with? Would you prefer to be a generalist, or a specialist with a particular weapon?

My first choice is along the lines of a wandering rogue. I'd like him to be able to do a little bit of magic, if you could give me an idea of how magic goes in this system.

My back-up thought, if you'd rather I didn't have magic as Vort is and it's supposed to be rare, is to have a hardened rogue who after a near death experience and being saved and healed by a wandering priest, is discovering that he can no longer practice the cold-blooded, out for himself game.

The rogue with some magic would be just fine. There are many types of magic, I assume you would like spell casting.
Stat wise Spell casting is primarily based on two characteristics of your character: first is you IQ, and second is your Magery. Those apply to all of your spells. Then there are the spells themselves, they are purchased as skills.

Characters from Danleb who wish to have spell casting ability will be innate casters, similar to the Sorcerers in D&D. These are people that are born with the ability to manipulate magic without instruction. Some are limited to one College of spells, while others can, if given time, figure out several colleges.

A College of Spells is a collection of closely related magic, such as Air, Weather, Earth, or Protection &Warning. There are around fifteen colleges.

Anywhere I can look at the list of fifteen or is that just a story base estimate?

Found this online: http://www.visi.com/~cosmos/GURPS/tables/colleges.html

that about sum them up (I assume some technology related ones aren't there) I'm interested in body control (depending on what it is) and/or Illusion/Creation.

I had the classic mounted knight in mind, though it doesn't sound like that is the level of troops that are fielded here? Basically it sounds like you are describing what I would envision would be th armament of the peasant levies rather than the knights. Perhaps I'm misperceiving?

Anyway I'd want to be able to use the spear, broadsword, shield, and axe. Probably favoring the shield + spear and shield + axe methods of fighthing.

If there are skills for strategy, leading groups of troops, or seige warfare I'd be interested in hearing about those as well.

That Spell college list is about right.
Here is a list of spells allowed for starting characters. Don't worry to much about the system mechanics. If you have any questions let me know.
If you need it in a specific file format let me know.

Sorry, I forgot the Lance.
Being Iron age, Plate type armor (Except for Bronze) does not yet exist.
There are heavy cavalry used. They are relatively few in number.
A note on armor:
Most soldiers wear Leather Tunic, Studded Leather Skirt, sandals, And in some cases Bronze Armbands, Bronze Greaves and Bronze Breastplate.
This is due to the High Temperature of the area. Day time temperatures are often in the 90's and in the summer it not uncommon for it raise above 120f.

There are skills for Leading peole and both Strategy (Large Scale) and Tactics (Small scale).

So there is more a prevailing usage of bronze age weaponry, iron age stuff being newer and harder to get?

What would the standard fighting style/troop of the nobility be then in this culture because it sounds like the whole knighthood style of thing is out of place in this setting?

Well... heavy cavalry exists? Are these guys the ones wearing the bronze chestplate and whatnot? Hmm.

I'll get a description of military organization up tomorrow.
In short, yes Bronze is the most commonly used metal. The rich (You) often use iron.
For environment, think Serengeti.

Alright, then I'd imagine him being an iron-using/wearing heavy cavalryman then. Probably decently rounded in his combat skills for now, competent as a footman if he needed to be one but prefering to fight from horseback. I'd like both of those leadership skills as well, which would probably be something he would keenly study as he got more experience. I'd expect someone of his position would sometimes be leading smaller units of non-noble knights/troops?

Yes, in service he would likly be a Shunan. That is, he would lead ten other men in battle. He would probably serve for about six months (The minimum period) then take six months off to adventure. Mercenary work tends to pay better than military service, if you are good at it. However it is more risky, as you do not have the protection of the military if you get into trouble off the battlefield.

A few questions (These are for both of you):
First, how strong were you thinking? I currently have Vortigern set at what amounts to fairly standard mercenary / Warrior strength which is somewhat stronger then most people but not exceptional (can carry 58 lbs with light encumbrance, and up to 290 lbs with extra heavy encumbrance)

I have Merbak at average strength.

Second is agility / Dexterity? I have Vortigern at a little over average, and Merbak at fairly high, but not exceptional.

Third is IQ: I have Vortigern at a little over average, he is bright but no genious. Merbak is slightly smarter.

Fourth, general health: this includes resistance to pain, fatigue, ability to overcome the effects of wounds, etc. I have both Vortigern and Merbak set fairly high, but not exceptional.

Fifth is Build: Skinny, Average, Overweight, Fat, or Very Fat. In addition to those five categories you can have Dwarfism or Gigantism, if you wish.

Sixth: Appearance. I currently have both of your characters at average. You can choose from amongst:
Hideous: You have any sort of disgusting looks you can come up with: a severe skin disease, wall-eye . . . prefer ably several things at once.
Ugly: As above, but not so bad maybe only stringy hair and snaggle teeth.
Unattractive: You look vaguely unappealing, but it’s nothing anyonecan put a finger on.
Average: Your appearance gives you no reaction modifiers either way; you can blend easily into a crowd. A viewer’s impression of your looks depends on your behavior. If you smile and act friendly, you will be remembered as pleasant-looking; if you frown and mutter, you will be remembered as unattractive.
Attractive: You don’t enter beauty contests, but are definitely good-looking.
Handsome (or Beautiful): You could enter beauty contests.
Very Handsome (or Very Beautiful): You could win beauty contests – regularly. Exception:
Members of the same sex with reason to dislike you resent your good looks. As well, talent scouts, friendly drunks, slave traders, and other nuisances are liable to become a problem for you.

Modifiers to these include:
Androgynous: If your appearance is Handsome (Beautiful) or better, you may specify that your looks appeal equally to both sexes.
Impressive: If you are Attractive or better, you can specify that you have exceptional physical presence that doesn’t manifest as sexual magnetism. This is typical of tigers and aged royalty.

Pitiable: Something about you makes people pity you and want to take care of you.
Fashion Sense: Your look is always one step ahead of the crowd. You have the ability to create a fashion statement out of the cheapest and most nondescript materials.

A few more questions (For both of you):
  1. Is your character truthful? That is, do they either dislike telling lies, or even just not good at it?
  2. Are they Honest? That is, do they fallow the law?
  3. How do they feel about killing? Do they feel that they must kill all enemies? Do they fell that killing for any reason is unacceptable? Or is it some ware in between?
  4. How do they feel about causing emotional harm to people?
  5. Are they Happy? Depressed? Angry? Even Tempered?
  6. How do like being around / Working with others? Love it? Need it? Hate it?
  7. Are they good at understanding others emotions? Oblivious?
  8. Do they follow a code of honor? Gentle mans code? Chivalric code? Highwayman's code? Soldiers code?
  9. Are they Brave? Cowardly?
  10. Any Delusions? Phobias?
  11. Greedy? Generous?
  12. Any senses particularly sharp? Dull?
  13. Any Phisical Diabilities? Missing an eye? A Leg? An Arm? A Hand? A finger?

1. I would say 'generally' yes, but I'm not certain how the demonology/pact magic fits in here. Is there going to be a cult-like association built in to this, or is this something he came up with via his own studies? Or do I get to pick?

2. See #1.

3. Killing depends on who you are talking about. Peasants don't matter: neutral karma. Barbarians: Good Karma. Nobles are people. You don't hurt people without reason.

4. Depends on what you mean by 'emotional harm'. Mmm. For now, in this setting, I'm seeing a kind of classic roman virtues kind of guy... which is to say rather 'not nice' by some modern standards.

5. Frustrated with his lot in life, but trying not to show it. Determined and ambitious.

6. People and connections are the only way he is going to get where he wants to go ( i.e. his own title. ). So he is quite into networking and trying to be more than just another name. He wants to be someone that the other young nobles think of when they need help with something for example. That entails a lot of going to young noble type gatherings, gambling/whoring, and generally just being one of the guys... whether he really wants to be there or not. Generally he probably considers it a vast waste of money that he would rather be putting somewhere else... but he needs to social connections. He probably resents all the firstborn sons that he is rubbing shoulders with, indeed trying to make connections with, for all the money the squander without thinking about it.

7. Not a natural in this area, but getting better because he has to be in order to get the connections he wants.

8. Gentleman's code because he wants to be perceived that way. Probably ruthlessly ambitious when he feels he can get away with it.

9. Bravery is the only way to get to his goals, so perhaps more brave than he should be because he feels he 'needs' to be.

10. I'll have to think about it.

11. Personally greedy, conspiciously generous for appearances sake.

12. + 13. - Nothing pertinent here that I can think of. Perhaps a battle scar or three?

I've decided I'd like him to be able to cast from the illusion school (and that only).

Ability scores look pretty good, the only thing I'm not sure about is his intelligence, which I would like to be fairly high... I envision him being quite sharp... except for that cat and mouse thing (see below).

Very Handsome Attractiveness sounds good, with a skinny build, and no modifiers.

  1. He's truthful when he can be, but could sell acres property in the Sahara to a water parks developer if he wanted to.
  2. He's a thief, but if he can do something legally with only slightly more trouble, he will.
  3. He strongly prefers not to kill, unless attacked, and even then he'd rather subdue and move on or just escape.
  4. Rich people - it gives him a rush, Jerks - he loves it, the poor/honest/downtrodden/hard working - wouldn't do it. Ever.
  5. Generally very even tempered. Extremes in emotion can get you into trouble.
  6. Loves being around people, but really doesn't need it, it's just more fun.
  7. Fairly good from the time he was a kid. Hasn't worked to develop it much, but can generally tell how someone is.
  8. Along the lines of Robin Hood. 60% of every illegal job, and 30% of each legal job is given away, Two thirds to the poor, one to one small town abbey or another where the priest is doing real good for the people.
  9. Brave, but as I said, he'd rather leave the fight (if alone + that's possible) than kill people. If he has friends in the fight, he'll stay to see that they can escape, and if someone is harming a helpless person (socially or physically), his ferocity knows no end.
  10. He knows with absolute certainty that cats are servants of the goddess, and mice + rats are the spawn of evil, who the cats battle every night for the sake of human beings. Therefore, he treats all cats very, very well, and will even ask a conversation partner to be excused for one second so he can hurl a dagger at a passing mouse or rat should he see one.
  11. Quite Generous to those of lower station, rather not to those of higher station.
  12. Sight and hearing are quite sharp from years on the street + his life depending on it. Taste and smell are rather weak. Being very poor for the entirety of your youth + giving away a lot of what you did manage to get your hands on... sometimes it's better not to smell where you're sleeping or taste what you're eating. He's now doing better for himself (very, very far from rich, but he has food and a place to sleep every night... errr... day, and some decent clothing).
  13. Surprisingly, he has no physical debilities. Perhaps it's a blessing of the goddess that he came through it all and is still as fit as a fiddle.

Hey Merbak, I'm curious about how we can work your 'Noble Hating Peasant Thief Extraordinaire' and my 'Peasant Despising Noble Demon Knight Extraordinaire' into a semi-cooperative bent? Or am I the only one who sees massive PVP potential in the offing? . Just seems like two characters destined to try and kill each other.
