D&D 5e Basic Rules

As you may or may not be aware, WotC has made a free 100 page .pdf available containing the so-called "basic rules" for the newest edition of D&D. You can find the download link here. I've gone through it once or twice and having not really looked at any of the playtest packets in a good long time it seems things have changed quite a bit, so it might be worth a look.

From what is available inside (basic races, along with the cleric/fighter/rogue/wizard classes) it certainly looks interesting. However, it is almost entirely devoid of the options for those classes that will be available in the PHB (along with more races and classes). As it stands, it is certainly playable but I long to see more before I can really judge the thing with any clarity.

I swear they released premade characters recently, but I can't find them now.

I shouldn't post things before I wake up.

So, when are you running a playtest?

Are you interested? Maybe we could do some sort of round robin GMing type thing.

Round robin type thing? Don't try to shirk your responsibilities like that

You try to set up origin stories for your players instead of going "you know each other already" and everything falls apart?

Am I reading this right? Do you no longer require a map and miniatures to properly run combat? If so, then great! It was the only major gripe I had with the previous versions of DnD.

I'd love to give this game a whirl, either as a player or GM. Can it be run using the Basic Rules, or am I going to have to wait until the books are published?

A lot of my (3e/3.5e) games didn't use a map. Of course, they are all PbP and I tend to play in games where everyone is okay winging it like that. The fact that 5e is shooting for combat that doesn't need a map is definitely a bonus though.

The Basic rules don't have any monsters at the moment so it's not exactly easy without the starter set, although there are a few free adventures around for 5e that probably extrapolated them from the playtest materials. So GMing should be feasible now though it might take a little work and won't necessarily be 100% official.

Oh, btw, I'd be game to give this a playtest. I'll be on a vacation next week though - I might have internet access or I might not, that's yet to be decided.

Still... would be tempting... The only other fantasy ruleset I'd consider is D6 Fantasy, and that's only because it's easy to use and free.

13th age is actually pretty cool too. At any rate, I've cobbled together a place where we can kick around ideas for some playtesting.

I've gotten my hands on TPH and MM for 5e, but still don't have the DMG. How essential is that final book? I plan on getting it either way, but it'll be good to know whether I NEED to get it before I can run anything at home.
