Post Setting & NPCs: What Is Known (OOC Thread)

What follows is some basic information about the setting and its inhabitants. This information is largely heresay and rumour - the authenticity of each statement is not known.

Whether your character knows each tidbit depends largely on how active he or she is in local Kindred circles. A member of the Camarilla who frequents Elysium often is likely to have heard it all, in one form or another, whereas a self-made recluse is unlikely to know anything but the most obvious and basic of information.

Updates will posted as facts are learned or rumours learned.

SETTING NOTES: Los Angeles
  • The City of Angels was once an Anarch domain - a part of the Anarch Free State that was created in 1944. After a lengthy campaign against both the Sabbat and Camarilla, however, the Anarchs were ousted from their seat of power in the early '80s, when Ivory Tower Justicars assassinated the eldest and most powerful Movement leaders.
  • Los Angeles is the only city in the "Anarch Free State" in which the Camarilla has managed to gain a foothold. Because of this, the Ivory Tower is still under constant threat from the Movement, even though Anarch numbers within the city are at a minimum.
  • Since stealing power from the Anarchs, the Camarilla has not suffered any significant attacks from the Sabbat - a surprising fact, given how fragile a grip the Ivory Tower initially held upon the city. Members of the Sword of Caine are known to still dwell within the city limits, but are believed to be even fewer in number than the Anarch Movement survivors - even so, rumours of their movements and plans are taken very seriously by those in power.
  • The Camarilla's seat of power is located in the San Fernando Valley.
  • Kindred are forbidden from feeding from, ghouling, or Embracing, celebrities, due to the increased risk that doing so poses to the Masquerade.
  • Though there is still a large amount of territory that has still yet to be gifted to Camarilla vampires, it is considered a show of trust and favour when the Prince gifts a Kindred with the rights to a domain: though the Ivory Tower is eager to build its power base within LA, it is careful to only grant land rights to those Kindred who prove both their worth, and their loyalty.
  • All vampires, regardless of sect, know to steer clear of Griffith Park: the most infamous of Lupine hunting grounds within the city limits.
  • At the time of the chronicle's introduction, LA has just seen the dawn of the year 2001. With the new millennium comes a fair bit of fury, confusion and relief from the more fanatical Gehenna-enthusiasts, who had been led to believe that the rise of the Third Generation would come at the end of 2000. More cynical Kindred point to this as proof that Gehenna is a myth and nothing more, whilst the more belief-stricken Kindred keep silent and continue to note the building portents and omens...

SETTING NOTES: Locations
  • The Monroe Theatre is very old, so much so that it was one of the first buildings of its kind to ever be built in the City of Angels. In the later part of the 20th century it had fallen into disuse and disrepair, but has since been saved closure by the financing and efforts of a mysterious benefactor. Kindred suspect that the theatre was saved upon the order of Prince Delacroix, whose childe, Rebecca Hedley, is a known theatre enthusiast, and who also declared the theatre to be Elysium not long after the restoration's completion. The theatre's Keeper of Elysium is Coalman, the mysterious Nosferatu.
  • As hotels go, the Spencer is large and very majestic to the eye. Well kept and fully manned by agents of the Kindred, the hotel not only helps bankroll important Camarilla functions, but its more private and "elite" sections serve as an Elysium for the vampires of the city. It's Keeper of Elysium is the infamous Mad Alice.
  • Kiss of the Rose is a singles bar that caters to the older clientele. It serves as a neutral hunting ground for Kindred, including Gabriel Morales.
  • The Rail Yard is known to be a dangerous place, both to the Kindred and to the kine. The majority of the Sabbat attacks that have taken place in the last few years were said to have happened in, or around, this location.

IMPORTANT NON-PLAYER CHARACTERS: Kindred
  • The Prince of Los Angeles is a Ventrue called Pious Delacroix. He is the second Prince to hold dominion over the City of Angels, after his predecessor was put to Final Death by the Justicars after they learned of his previous attempts to broker deals with the (now dead) leaders of the Anarch Movement. Delacroix is believed to be very old; his cold temper, and ability to harbour a grudge, are legendary.
  • Rebecca Hedley is the Prince's childe. She is rarely seen outside of her sire's shadow, but is known to be a very capable woman with a head for numbers and administration.
  • The vampire Leka has lived within the city limits for as long as anyone can remember. As an Autarkis, she swears fealty to no-one but herself - and only the most foolish of individuals would seek to make it otherwise. Clan Gangrel claims her as its own, but she is seen so infrequently and by so few that such a claim is hard to validate.
  • The city Sheriff is a small, but forboding woman called Vanian. She never speaks, and is fanatically loyal to the Prince of LA.
  • Michael Chase is a Toreador, infamous for his flamboyance, and for his efficient use of his position as a Harpy. He's a hoarder of information and rumours, and deals in secrets.
  • Plucky Jake, a Nosferatu elder, is the ruler of the city's warrens. Little else is known about him, even to the others of his clan.
  • Goldilocks is the childe of Plucky Jake. She serves as the clan's representative on the Primogen, and is instantly recognisable thanks to her tendancy to adorn herself in golden wigs and ill-fitting dresses.
  • Mad Alice, the city's most infamous Malkavian, exists in the body of a twelve-year-old, but is reputed to be one of the oldest remaining Kindred in the city. A former Anarch sympathiser, Delacroix ensures her loyalty through the blood bond, and she currently serves him as the Keeper of Elysium for the Spencer Hotel. She treats her ghouls and herd like dolls, even going so far as to stitch their skin together, and literally put words into their mouths.
  • Deacon Rhodes is the current leader of the city's remaining Anarch Movement. Little is known about him.
  • Sarah Adler is a Tremere recluse who habitually conducts experiments on other Kindred, to better understand the vampiric condition.
  • Whilst only an ancilla, William Berbage possesses the ear of some of the more powerful members of Clan Toreador. He cares little for Kindred politics, at least outside of what is necessary/immediately beneficial to himself. His childe is Gabriel Morales.
  • Adam Estley is a Brujah and a proud Anarch, but fails to fall into the stereotype of either: he is charming and possesses formidable levels of self-control. He also has considerable influence over seniors members of the LAPD and governing offices. He seems to have taken a mild interest in the LA newcomer, Allan Gamble.
  • Matthew Harber is a Ventrue who, by and large, prefers his own company to that of any others. Though he once played a role in placing Los Angeles under Camarilla control, in recent nights he has been marked as something as a pariah after his childe, Derek Wilson, was found guilty of the murder of one of the city's Hounds, and sentenced to the Final Death.
  • The Keeper of Elysium for the Monroe Theatre is a Nosferatu simply called 'Coalman'. He's rarely seen about the building, save in instances of an infraction of the rules - on these occasions he appears as if from nowhere to exact his retribution upon the guilty parties. His laughter, a haunting and hollow sound, is said to echo through the theatre depths.
  • A true child of Spain, Catalina Alvarez came to America during the early-to-mid 1950s, and began immediately accruing power and influence within the Camarilla. Helping the Ivory Tower secure Los Angeles as part of its domain is often seen as one of her crowning achievements to date. In the years prior to her sudden disappearance from the city limits, she took it upon herself to mentor the Malkavian Kindred, Isabella De Luca. The Toreador's subtle kinship with Clanmate William Berbage helped to explain why the male Degenerate would have taken steps to introduce his own progeny, Gabriel Morales, to Catalina's charge.
  • Despite having claimed dominion over the former Anarch Free State, the Camarilla's grip on the city remains fragile. Because of this, the arrival of "AD Security" director Steven Knorr was welcomed. This elder Kindred helps to ensure that Kindred meeting sites remain free of violence - provided he is compensated for his efforts. He arrived in Los Angeles in the company of his grandchilde, Jack Martin.
  • The Kindred Antonio De Luca is a callous, manipulative, cunning and charming predator who belongs to Clan Giovanni. He requested the right to give his niece, Isabella De Luca, the Proxy Kiss, and was named as her intended sire; but then, without explanation, Isabella was Embraced by another - and became a child of Malkav.

IMPORTANT NON-PLAYER CHARACTERS: Mortals
  • Bernice Whitman is, despite her advancing years, considered by all who know her to be a formidable woman: she's forthcoming with both her opinions and musings (of which she has many), and possesses a strong interest in her local community and its well-being. She is also the sole owner of one of the better known 24/7 stores located in the Arts District. The Malkavian Isabella De Luca makes her haven in the upper-levels of this building.
  • As the Commanding Officer of the Major Crimes and Emergency Services Division, Thomas Spencer possesses a respectable degree of clout within the LAPD. He's a hard man, but is respected by his peers for his commitment to the job and his oath as an officer of the law. He considers Isabella De Luca a suitable, if enigmatic, ally.
  • A relatively new addition to Mad Alice's assortment of blood dolls and playthings, Chris Jennings once maintained a successful career as a middle-school teacher. He has since been the frequent target of the Dominate Discipline which, coupled with his growing addiction to the Kiss, has damaged his work-life considerably. So far, he has managed to keep this new need a secret from his friends and family, but it's only a matter of time before he slips up.
