Fort Griffin Echo 1,1: Daily News at its finest!

May 21st, 1870 Spring Equinox.

A beautiful first day of spring and after last night's events in the Beehive Saloon, there is some apprehension among the citizens. Like, who was that stranger who road into town and played a mean game of faro before his opponents got upset and tried to gun him down?

This guy was fast though, nearly as fast as the famed lawman Wyatt Earp or so their saying now behind closed doors. Doc Holliday even says his speed puts him to shame. The gringo road in at dusk on a pale steed and stopped here first at the Beehive Saloon. He smoked a bit, and slapped down a few coins and bought the last bit of whiskey in the house and drank it down, all the while eyeing Lottie Deno, the lovely dealer working the tables that night. After collecting his winnings, he strode out, the only sound was the ka-ching of his boot spurs as he saddled up and road down the street to one of the inns to get a room with his winnings evidently. No one, not even the local authorities have tried to talk to him. The soldiers at Fort Griffin must have better things to worry about than some drifter, probably those Indians.

In other news, there are still several outstanding bounties for the Wild Bunch a gang of local horse thieves, general ramble rousers and gunmen reported to have killed and raped several woman and shot at least two men dead on their farms. There is a sale today on horse feed at York & Meyers Outfitters. Hopefull, the Wild Bunch won't do a raid on the best outfitter in the region.

There are several want ads as well:

Looking for a possee to form to hunt down, and capture dead or alive the Wild Bunch, speak to Sheriff John Larn, at Fort Griffin Jail ( Picket Jail)

Looking for cattle rustlers, paying in cash, talk to Big Jake at Northwest Texas Cattle Association.

SHOOTOUT AT BIG JAKE'S RANCH, WILD BUNCH DEFEATED, LEADERS ON THE RUN!

Today's issue has the main story of the showdown at Big Jake's Ranch by sheriff John Larn and his makeshift possee and the Wild Bunch gang.

There was a fierce shootout and the sheriff with his possee staked out the ranch. Several ranch hands were killed and the ranch itself was damaged some by some dynamite and gunfire, but overall, the sheriff and his possee won the night. They killed at least 3 confirmed members and captured one and he's now awaiting a hanging or so in Picket Jail!

The gang leaders are said to be on the lamb and headed for the hills or maybe Mexico or the border north. Any sightings contact Texas Rangers or sheriff John Larn of Fort Griffin/The Flat.

There is Indian activity reported by the soldiers of Fort Griffin, all citizens be on the lookout for suspicious herds/groups of natives or any war parties. Report any unusual activity to your local commander.

Big Jake is looking for new ranch hands to replace those lost in the shootout with the Wild Bunch and he has a cattle drive to make that he's willing to pay top dollar to qualified cattle herders.

There are two new doctors in town, setting up their businesses, competition is likely to be strong.

There is a reward for the murder of the lovely dove named Cindi, reportedily killed in a fight last night in Bower's Saloon. The sheriff would like to know any leads.

The hunt for the leaders of the Wild Bunch continues, sheriff has posted a reward for their capture or verified death. A group went out in search for the remaining members. They sent back a young man wounded with a horse belonging to a Texas Ranger. The boy got treatment at the doctor's and is recovering well. No word from the group, but an Indian Scout reported finding the body of two of them recently in some hills about 20 miles north/northeast of Fort Griffin.

Big Jake is still looking for new ranch hands to replace those lost in the shootout with the Wild Bunch and he has a cattle drive to make that he's willing to pay top dollar to qualified cattle herders.

Been several days now, still no news from the group. A day ago a Texas Ranger left Fort Griffin to search out the survivors.
