Chapter 1

Our story opens in Sharn, the city of towers, as Careth d'Medani, a master inquisitive for House Medani, assembles his team. His objective is the recovery of a diplomatic pouch, stolen by a brigand named Brougha Torr. Careth’s first acquisition is Torr’s former commander, Veit Reinstadler—once a Cyrian captain, now little more than a ghost of the Last War. They soon meet the beautiful and mysterious Leanna, whose beauty is only challenged by her mystery. She agrees to aid the pair on the condition that they take her with them. Putting his suspicions aside for the moment, Careth agrees to her terms.

Leanna informs her new partners that Torr is in the employ of Daask and that he is en route to the Cogs. If he makes it underground in Sharn—especially if he makes it to his contacts in Daask—the pouch may become impossible to retrieve. So the trio put in motion a plan to travel to Ardev in order to intercept Torr before he can get to the city of towers.

Before leaving Sharn, Veit makes a brief stop in House Kundarak’s public vaults to retrieve his familial armor. As Leanna leaves her initial meeting with Careth and Veit, she becomes aware of someone following her. She initially gives her tail the slip, but an unseen assailant cracks her across the bridge of her nose with an inch-thick rod of laquered oak, rendering her unconscious. Which is more mysterious: that her mugger neither robbed nor violated her, or that she has yet to disclose the event to her partners?

Chapter 2

Our trio picks up some hired help: Mara Xar (a Denieth Defender), Daniel (a Denieth Blademark), and Neb (another Blademark). After a little more than a week’s travel, the party pulls into Ardev late one night. They are looking for Firebrand, another nere-do-well who sometimes serves as a contact for Torr. Instead, they find Azgot, a hunter from the Demon Wastes.

After an intense and awkward introduction where Azgot makes himself at home with Careth’s drink, he and his companion, Saedra, are invited to join the party for a meal. As the introductions unfold, Firebrand and his retinue of gnolls and hobgoblins file into the Cup and make themselves a little too much at home. Shortly thereafter, Azgot regales the party with hunting stories from the Demon Wastes. During a particularly riviting tale of the time Azgot helped slay a bebilith demon with a knife, Saedra is overcome by the memory of her dead husband and the pain caused by the man she and Azgot pursue. Noticing that dark forces threaten to take over his companion, Azgot excuses himself (sort of) and leads Saedra outside.

Saedra regains her composure, and the pair returns inside where she is promptly identified as the Bloodwalker. Chaos claims the Copper Cup for about 12 seconds. Firebrand’s thugs attack. Firebrand himself sets the Cup ablaze. Azgot rushes headlong into the inferno to engage the gnolls and hobgoblins. Mara is eventually able to subdue Firebrand. Azgot is given an arrow through the lungs for his trouble, and would have died were it not for the quick action of Veit (who disregarded an order from Careth to retrieve him). During that moment, Veit briefly re-connects with his diety and is able to heal Azgot’s wounds. A gnomish fire brigade quickly shows up to douse the Cup’s flames while the wounded are tended to.

Will Azgot ever find out what sept Veit is from?

Will Careth choose to share his prisoner with the Bloodwalker?

And just what the hell is das unendliche Licht, anyway?

Keep tuning in to find out the answers to these questions and more!
