Bad movies you like

Admit it. You all have at least one movie that most of the world hates that you liked. Maybe even several. It could be that you just don't know why people think it's bad. it could be that you know it's bad but you like it anyway. the point is what are the bad movies you like? for me it's Waterworld and that old live action mario brothers movie.

Now its your turn.

Unfortunatly most of my favourite movies are ones generally considered "bad" by most everyone else. But if I had to top the list I have 3 little words.

OK, Waterworld was one of those movies that was so awesome that I don't understand why other people don't like it.

I like "bad" movies a lot so it's not even worth listing exhaustively... examples are TRON, Small Soldiers and Return of the Killer Tomatoes

Small Soldiers as in Small Soldiers? That's not a bad movie.

Well of course, I didn't think so either.

It wasn't a blockbuster (though it was finacially sucessful) or a great movie in general terms, but I was a far cry from being a bad movie. People calling it a bad movie need to recheck their standards. 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' sets the standard for a bad movie, and Small Soldiers falls far short of it.

Small Soldiers was pretty bad. I can't think of anything suitable from my own tastes, liking something that is bad is a bit of an oxymoron. Or I just have a huge ego.

Actually, I can of a fair few books which I've enjoyed despite them being quite trashy but oddly I can't think of any film equivalents.

For the record, I also enjoyed Small Soldiers.

As for a truly "bad" movie that I happen to like, I'll have to actually think about that. Unless you consider the newer Star Wars trilogy bad, in which case, I'll have to shoot you.

Episode 3 was alright, 1 and 2 kinda... sucked. Sorry, they just weren't done well.

I will never forgive Lucas for making Gredo shoot first....

anything by Ed Wood - its like watching someone unlearn how to make a movie.

Bad movies that I like? Like BRR, I'm not sure I can really separate a "bad" movie and say that I like it. I have been entertained by bad movies, but I wouldn't say that I like them.

So, I'll assume we are considering bad as in flops or some other method like that for my first lilst - Starship Troopers, Fifth Element, Waterworld, The Postman, From Dusk Til Dawn.

Bad movies (as in awful flicks but ones that were entertaining) - Them, anything that Mystery Science Theatre 3000 lampooned, anything by Ed Wood, Mars Attacks, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and just about any '50s and '60s horror or scifi B grade movies.

Oh Man... I'd forgotten about "The Postman"... I loved that movie too... and Fifth Element is one of my favorites that I would have never expected anyone to call bad (well... except for "Ruby Rod")...

Now Starship Troopers was a medium videogame pretending to be a movie. It's campy as all hell but what pushed it over the edge to being a bad movie in my mind is the intention of the film makers. They intended for it to a serious movie making comments and criticisms.

And that's leaving the "book to movie conversion" elements to the side.

..which effectively take the thing from "pathetic" to "an insult"...

seriously, if you haven't read the book go read it now...

the way I managed to enjoy starship troopers was to realize it had absolutely nothing to do with the book and was just a creative action movie... then it's moderately enjoyable...

Starship troopers was a good film, the sequel was bad. Spending all of their money on an IP and not having anything left to animate the aliens with was a terrible idea.

That's because it didn't, the conversion to an adaption of Starship Troopers took place relativly late in the process. Unfortunatly I fear listening to the audio commentart for the movie may have forever ruined it for me.

“ Starship troopers was a good film, the sequel was bad. ”
The second one had a very obvious limited budget but from memory, it also had a better plot.

Ok since no one is going to man up and say it -

Episodes 1-3 sucked. They sucked in ways that are boggle the mind, especially given the amount of money poured into those "movies" and the number of actually good actors they hired. I mean the Knights of the Old Republic video games have a better plot. The Clone Wars cartoons by Tartakovskywere better directed.

Lucas is a hack. He had a good spin on some old ideas but then became hoisted on the petard of his own ego. Special effects alone do not a movie make. I'm not asking for academy caliber drama, just a degree of cogency.

I mean honestly...mitachlorians? Please.

The only good thing he did was NOT messing with Empire.

Well, I wouldn't call Lucas a hack but I concede that the point is debatable. Otherwise, amen brother .

Bad movies I like . . . well, there are more than a few.

Big Trouble In Little China, although I suppose you could make the argument that it doesn't take itself seriously so it isn't really bad. Still, bad. But really really good.

Truly bad, in every way shape and form, without even the excuse of trying to be bad, was Under the Boardwalk. Yet, against all good taste and any sense of manliness, I enjoyed it.

Bad, but at least more manly, was Timebomb. It has a shootout in a porno theater, so there isn't much more to say.

Also very bad, and made even worse by the presence of Brigette Nielsen, was Cobra. What can I say, I have a soft spot for the '50 merc.

Yes, there are more but I think that's enough to put this thread back on track for now.

Episode 3 had some plot issues, but it was way better than 1 and 2.

Still, they weren't very good. It's kind of sad.

Anyway, there are 2 reasons to see a movie: to see a good movie, and to look at eye candy.

You forgot "to be entertained" which trumps all other factors... if you are entertained by poorly written space-opera... by all means I won't begrudge your enjoyment of it.

To be entertained is more general. If you go with the explicit purpose of one of the two I mentioned for a movie meant to do that, then you should be enjoyed.

War of the Worlds for example, was an eye candy movie. No plot at all, but great special effects.

On the other hand, some movies have little to no special effects and are fantastic films.

The atmosphere was the key element in War of the Worlds, I think atmosphere is distinct from special effects, and it succeeded despite Tom Cruise and the rather forced moral of how Sony Handycams can survive EM blasts.

I disagree, I don't think it saved the movie.
