5th Edition

Well, how excited are you?

I realise that the announcement was made long ago, but now there's a few shreds of info out there so we can move beyond "I just bought 4th edition" and into "It sounds awful/great"

Additionally, I had to use the forbidden "DnD" over "D&D" due to silly forum issues. I'm equally aware that right now it's being referred to as D&D Next in an effort to confuse people.

I voted for "incapable of feeling excitement." What I really am is "cautiously optimistic."

A lot of what I'm hearing from the design information that comes out sounds good to me. But it sounds too good in most cases, which sets me on my heels. I absolutely love the idea of "modules" to add on or take away complexity of the game so that I can build the game to my personal style. On the flip side I really question its viability. Will 5E really be able to do everything they say it can? I don't think that's possible, and I worry that "too many cooks in the kitchen [will] spoil the broth."

That said, I expect the open beta playtest documents to come out around June (based on current information I see floating about), so until I actually get my grubby hands on it, I just won't know.

Merc has managed to sum up my feelings almost exactly.

Incapable of feeling excitement is literally accurate for me, but I voted for "the devil" because so far, the design sounds eyeball-rollingly awful. I guess we'll know for sure later, though.

What sounds so awful? I haven't been following the news all that closely.

Yep, incapable of feeling excitement. I've never been excited about a new edition actually. We only switched to 3rd edition after it had been out for... hm... at least two years, maybe more.

I didn't look into 4th edition much at all.

So... yeah. I'm not interested in the new edition and am not following any news. Although I am following what you guys write about it. We'll see if you'll arouse my interest at some point.

I was excited about 3e. I'd more or less been out of gaming (no group or time) for a few years at that point. I really did like the direction it took (although I think they dropped the ball when it came time to expand on it) and it definitely got me back into the hobby.

Merc's "cautiously optimistic" (which I think is requoted from me in the previous thread) is about where I fall. However, I share LP's concern and am probably a bit more pessemistic than Merc on it. I think the "too many cooks in the kitchen" thing is my biggest concern. Their goal is too lofty. Sure, making a system that is cross compatible with other systems and can be as complex/simple as you like all seems like good goals but I just do not believe there is a method to accomplish that in any satisfactory way.

...or at least a way I would find satisfactory. But, I'm at least open-minded enough to not make a judgement until I see a product.

Also, 3rd edition was the only edition I was excited about (outside of Pathfinder which I was involved with the beta for). That mostly came from my distaste of THAC0, reverse AC and a crappy skill system. I also liked the goals that came with the Skills and Powers system (while it was easily abusable) I feel that was the beginnings of what became 3.x.

I haven't even gotten into 4E yet. Of course I've been generally leery of buying new game systems since every one I've bought that wasn't D&D has gotten almost no use.
