Creation Challenges

Back on 3ebb, we used to have contests where people would create something based on a theme or idea set out by the contest creator, and could of course interpret the theme in the way they wanted. A lot of interesting material was created in pursuit of winning these contests, ranging from character classes to NPCs for games to adventures.

I'm interesting in restarting these contests, and since my real life has settled down a great deal and it's not nearly as ambitious as the Challenge Rating Challenge was, I don't expect to disappear half way through the contest =p.

I have some ideas for the first contest to start with, so my question is whether people would be interested in participating in these contests.

The system for the contest would change every once in a while, and some contests would be non-system specific.

If it looks like there's a reasonable amount of interest in participating, we might even discuss real prizes. Honestly though, it's a good excuse to create good and interesting material and share it so that everyone benefits .

They certainly were fun and interesting.

So you'd say "Come up with a adventure that takes place entirely in one locale, has no monsters or NPC and starts and finishes in one session" or something like that and we'd have to work out the mechanics for it or whatever?

I'd be up for seeing what other people come up with and trying my hand on occasion...

No, generally they're way more general than that, and the entire direction is chosen by each participant.

One old example that someone did was "Create a character class."

The theme was "Evil."

That was it, everything else was up to each participant. I still have my entry from that one laying around, I didn't win, but I had a long and involved write-up for my soul stealing class (based on magic of incarnum rules, which is generally a pretty disliked or ignored supplement).

Mind you, these contests were held on the 3rd edition bulletin board, so all the contests were 3rd edition related. That isn't necessarily going to apply here, I plan on changing the systems from time to time to get lots of interesting content and get people thinking .

I remember that. I was one of the judges for the first couple. I think it was a short adventure and an NPC or something.

All I remember is that we always specified a submission template and 90% of submissions ignored it.

I'd definitely be interested. They were fun. And they were a way to participate outside of games and whatnot.

I'm not creative enough, sorry. Maybe I'd try regardless, but... nope, don't count on it.

I did follow them back in the days. I'm not sure there are enough people around here on ORP to make it work though. So... you guys prove me wrong.

I'd be interested but probably would only participate in systems I'm familiar with. I don't want to go out and learn a new system just to participate in a contest. Most of the stuff I submitted back in the day I used in games I played/DMed.

I love doing this type of thing. When I was DMing f2f campaigns with old buddies I swear I had more fun sometimes writing the adventures than actually playing them. I especially love creating unique intelligent items and molding an adventure or more around them. I spanned an entire campaign in 3.0 DnD from 2nd-22nd level based around a few well placed and well thought up intelligent magic items.
