=============================

Nuada found herself an orphan for as long as she can remember. She managed to survive in a small urban town in the southwest until she was picked up by the slave trade at an early age. The experience wasn't as bad as most for Nuada, but she came out of it hating slavers and slavery. During her several years in captivity, Nuada learned to speak but not to read. By the time she was eleven or twelve, Nuada managed to escape from the slavers into the southern deserts. There she struggled to live for a short while. Racked with fatigue, Nuada stumbled across the dunes, only by chance finding a small grotto at the base of one of the many identical rolling dunes. She made her home there, finding several desert plants and even a dampness on the rocky walls which ran into a puddle, sustaining her in a vastly dehydrated region.

After exhausting the plant supply in the grotto, Nuada was forced to move out of the grotto to search for food. Leaving by night, the young girl was largely unsuccessful in finding food and tried to make her way back to her cave. She found that the way back was undecipherable and that she now was lost in the desert again. She wandered until day broke and eventually passed out due to starvation and dehydration. She later awoke to a splitting rippling through her body. Standing above her in the heat was a woman, undoubtedly a slaver. She seemed to find a kind of pleasre in whipping the young girl. Struggling up, Nuada attempted to scramble away, but found that her legs were bound. This situation seemed much worse than her previous experience with slavery and after a little while Nuada began to fear for her life.

But the woman didn't stop. Nuada rolled away from the whip as far as she could, burning her bare back on the hot sand. As the woman went to retrieve Nuada, the girl bit out and the slaver yelped in pain. Glaring, she called out to a wagon that was a bit back and a man joined her with a club. Nuada's eyes widened as the large cudgel came around, but was surprised to see that she had scrambled out of the way just in time and the rope that had bound her were lying in tatters on her clawed hands. Before she could even contemplate why there were claws on her hands or even fur, she was upon the woman, scratching and kicking. The slaver slumped to the ground without a sound and losing interest, Nuada streaked towards the man, who was now retreating fearfully. Somewhere in the frenzy the wagon had escaped and Nuada had passed out again out of fatigue.

Nuada found herself awoken at night by a pale, hooded figure. She immediately screamed and backed off, tripping on something behind her. Looking around, she saw fresh corpses, and not remembering the events of earlier that day or recognizing the language of the hooded figures, the frightened girl darted off into the darkness as fast as her little feet could carry her. As she slowed down she noticed ruts in the dunes and began to remember what happened. She looked at her hands and shivered. They were still red. Forcing that out of her mind, she followed the tracks and soon found the wagon. Stowing upon it, she waited and waited until a city showed on the horizon. By this time Nuada had had time to understand (to an extent) what had happened and found (with a little difficulty) the willpower to change herself. With her newfound ability, Nuada payed back the remaining slavers and freed the slaves on board and made her way into the city.

After her escape from slavery, Nuada lived by stealing food and living in the alleys. Her main worry was surviving, so she didn't mind so much. What really got to her was the loneliness. The local urchins were skeptical of her and rumors began to circulate about her being some kind of monster . She did find it easier to travel in her hybrid form, but no matter how careful she was, there were always prying eyes.

Eventually Nuada retreated to the dunes. She would scamper around and visit the local meerkat families. This wasn't always successful for the same reasons as in the city, but it was better than nothing. She would often stare up at the stars and wonder what had happened and how. The confused child couldn't decide whether to be grateful or contemptuous.

One day - a lot like the others - while scanning the dunes, Nuada noticed a young boy stumbling along the sand heading away from the city. It had been a while since she had been to the city, and it was weird seeing another kid. Glancing out again, she noticed that he had disappeared over a dune. Interested, she scampered along after him, following his trail.

As she cleared the top, she noticed the lad to be a lot closer than she had estimated, and upon closer inspection, Nuada found that the boy was in fact injured and had fainted from exhaustion.

Changing back into a human, she considered taking the boy back with her to her den and watching over him. She thought again, however, as she looked at herself, obviously different from all the others. Her eyes were darker and larger than average, and under the bandages she wore on her torso and abdomen was a fine layer of bronze fur, definitely a result of her abilities. Worst of all were her ears, just like a meerkat. These were the reason she always wore a bandanna. If he saw her, he would probably run away screaming.

Against all of her rationale, Nuada just couldn't find it in her to leave the boy out there to die. With her decision final, she carefully brought him back with her to her den.

Days passed and Nuada nursed the young boy back to health. His gratitude was boundless and the two soon became close friends. Nuada learned that he was running from some bandits near the border of town and the best ways to avoid them. She taught the boy, Aiea, how to survive in the wild and in return, Aiea showed Nuada how to make it on the streets. The boy brought Nuada to his secret corner and gave her a token of his friendship. It was a knife made entirely of crystal or diamond.

Nuada soon found that all she ever wanted was to be with Aiea, and her friend never imagined being closer with anyone else. Their friendship continued to grow and Aiea told Nuada about his quest to steal the rare gems of the region's prefect from inside his mansion. Nuada thought highly of the mission and together they started low, stealing and pickpocketing in order to finally get those gems.

This is when Aiea learned of Nuada's abilities. hey spent every night in Nuada's den, and Nuada finally decided to expose herself to her closest friend. Removing her shirt, bandages, and bandanna, Nuada showed Aiea how different she was. She even showed him her ability to become a meerkat. To her utmost surprise, Aiea wasn't afraid at all. In fact, he was ecstatic, and told Nuada how cool she was. The girl couldn't have been more happy, and didn't let him out of her embrace until they woke up the next evening.

Together they roamed the streets, building quite a trove and reputation. After two years together, Aiea decided that the time had come. Even though they were still kids, they knew they were up to the task.

They set off under the cover of night. Nuada hefted her companion and scaled the mansion in hybrid form. Finding and unlocked window, they snuck in, immediately coming across the glass case they were looking for. Neither found it strange how easy this had been, and proceeded towards the case. Nuada drew her knife and found it glowing with the colors of the five gems and the two shared a glance of excitement.

Nuada found the glass open and lifted it for Aiea to grab the gems. As the boy's hands closed around the biggest gem, a brilliant flash lit up the room, and the house rumbled with an unknown force. All at once, the light and rumbling stopped and the four other gems shot into the sky, leaving half the roof gone. Only one gem remained, but Aiea did not. Anxiety set in as Nuada looked for her best friend, the person she loved, her soulmate. Nuada jumped as she heard voices below and in a panic, grabbed the gems and ran out into the night.

She slept alone that night. Alone and scared. The only comfort she found was in the gem. Upon closer inspection, she found that it had changed color from it's fiery red to a deep, dark blue - the color of Aiea's eyes, and the gem had become perpetually warm, emitting the smallest of pulses of energy as if it were a heart.

Nuada went around town asking about the gems, the prefect, and a missing boy. She heard a rumor that the rare set trapped a soul and only released it when the gems were reunited. Without questioning further, Nuada set out east and North, searching every city and caravan for gems in hope to find the other and free her love, Aiea.

==========================

Nuada stands about five feet tall, with darkly tanned skin. Jet black hair trails out from under her bandanna in two ponytails, with her bangs almost covering her large dark eyes. Beneath her shirt are wrapped several bandages, covering almost her entire torso and abdomen and leading down to her high-water pants. She wears no shoes, and has a very innocent but desperate air about her. Nuada is fourteen.
