Background

Kjetil grew up in Iskinech, a large village in the southern part of Jedaart and bordering on K'bes, as third son to a rich trader, Bonur Halverson. He was taught all there is to learn about trade and warfare in order to be able to assist his father and elder siblings. At age 14, Iskinech was attacked by two orc tribes which had allied for this major attack. The attack was repelled, but with severe losses to the people of Iskinech, both in lives and wealth. Luck, fate, destiny - whatever it had been, the Halversons were the only family left entirely untouched. In the days to come there was talk of the blessèd family, but there was other talk, too. Darker talk. The fact that most of the family had been curiously absent during the assault only fed the rumors. The Aart normally weren't prone to gossip, but a religious and superstitious lot they were.

Bonur Halverson stoically ignored the talk, but even though it lestened over the months, a spark of doubt remained, always. When Kjetil approached his 16th birthday, his father called for him. "It is time, Kjetil. Time for the Gods to judge you, to judge us." Despite Kjetil's questions as to the meaning of these words, Bonur remained silent and only took him outside their longhouse where a crowd had gathered. In a short speech, Bonur told the gathered Aart that his son would travel into K'bes on the morrow and that he'd be sent into the orc-infested hilly regions to the far south-east. No more needed to be said. Bonur sent his son to prove that the Gods had favored them on the night of the attack and to exact revenge in the name of those that had fallen... or to never to return. There was an uproar of shouts at this proclamation, then silence. Nothing more needed to be said.

Kjetil did as his father told him, as was custom. But there was doubt in his heart. Doubt that he'd be up to the task. His brothers were much stronger than him, more war-bent and capable of facing the terrors of the cold wasteland. Off he went on the next morning to face his doom.

Three weeks had passed when Kjetil returned, his guisarme covered in frozen blood and over a dozen orc ears fastened to the leather cord with which he strapped it across his back. No longer a boy, but a man. No longer doubtful, but self-confident. The Gods favored the Halversons and revenge had been exacted. As if his deeds weren't enough proof, Kjetil wore a thick golden torc about his neck engraved with images of clouds and lightning.

Still, the pressure of the orcs was strong at the outskirts of the Aart's settlements. In the next two years, many families left Iskinech to search their luck elsewhere. Against Kjetil's explicit demand to stay despite overwhelming odds with so many families gone, Bonur finally decided to leave as well. No good would come from staying...

... but no good came from his decision either. Kjetil got into a major fight with his father and elder brothers demanding from them to stay and not relinquish their ancient territories to the orcs. While Kjetil's opinion was welcome, his demand and his choice of words were way out of place. If he would not bow to his elder's decisions, he was free to find his luck elsewhere. Whatever had happened to Kjetil in the wastes had changed him thoroughly. He was unable to accept his father's decision. Gathering his belongings, Kjetil left Iskinech, his family and after a short visit to Odajaaa Jedaart entirely.

Destiny led him to Edinway where he spent the next six years training and then working as a specialized body guard at several occasions. Extremely capable and reliable, Kjetil nonetheless sent shivers down his client's spines with his cold and efficient demeanor and they weren't too unhappy that he refused to work for anyone for longer than a few months at a time, if at all. It took Kjetil the larger part of the six years to overcome the mistrust the nobles of Edinway had of an Aart brute. Despite adapting to life in Edinway, Kjetil wore his grey fur cloak at most times and his weapon of choice never left his side. Decidedly warlike he wasn't something these people wanted to have near them at a ball. Rat trouble had him in great demand and he guarded people and goods alike in the months to come against the strange beings.

When the storm hit, his current employer found him kneeling and praying. Despite the man's insistence that Kjetil should fulfill his contract, Kjetil ignored the man. Instead, he threw him the bag with his payment and gazed past him towards the storm with gleaming eyes. Grasping his weapon he strode past the confused noble and set out to face his fate.
