Trey, wait for ideas as long as you want before exercising your captainly perogatives.
There are EVA suits available, and some kind of grappling device might be jerry-rigged, and/or the thruster exhaust idea might be tried. Those are the ideas so far as far as I can tell.

Approximatly how large is the container, and about how fast is it tumbling?
Wired*Nun
22nd of February, 2009, 08:37
It's about the size of Folly's cargo bay, and wouldn't fit through the doors. It's tumbling at about 20RPM.

Trey, you might want to have Abi explicitly order the crew to execute a plane e.g., Xavier get suited up, Arthur prepare a spare attitude thruster and a way to attach it, etc. Be captainly. Otherwise people tend to flounder.

Haha, vacuum case. Vacuum cases are not actually needed for firearms for the reason in the rulebook. Anyone that knows a thing about firearms realizes that the oxidizer is included within the powder, ever since they started making machined cartidges in the 1800s. That is, no external oxygen is needed to fire a weapon. Sometimes game designers don't do elementary research.
That being said, temperature will drop in a vacuum pretty fast, and if a firearm gets cold enough bad things can happen i.e., metal gets brittle, firing pins break, springs don't spring very well, etc.
So, a "space case" will still be standard equipment if you think you will need to fire your weapon outside of atmo. Without one, you can fire the weapon but it will have a much higher incidence of jamming, breaking etc., depending on how simple or complex a weapon it is.

I realize that in automoving the story forward I short-circuited the decision-making processs to a certain extent, ending up with this little tussle between Abi and Yu. Just RP though it, and I accept responsibility, since I didn't anticipate Yusheng's objection.
Sorry about that.

Once the Captain arrives, Sam will explain the situation offering the following input, "It appears to be civilian and approaching the cargo container for investigation. Should I try to hail them?"
WTF? Are we playing Star Trek, LOL?

I love that post, samirah! Sorry to be confusing. I'll post soon--probably tomorrow morning--when I figure out what type of spacial construct to narrow the search to. Right now there are too many options.

In rereading Abi's words, it looks like at first reading that she is throwing the problem in Yu's lap, though I think Trey meant to convey that Abigail was asking Yu to work with her together to think of something...
Given the possibilities, and all I really have to work with is the rulebook and the various show materials (visual guuides, etc), if it was in the show I have it somewhere, if not, it has to be made up. There is no geography beyond a few sketchy diagrams of orbits, which unless I want to keep a computer model of a system composed of hundreds of worlds, I'm just going to ignore for story purposes.
So, I need something from a player, whether it's the Captain or whatever, that gives me a storyline to lay out. I'm not going to make that decision. For example:
- We head to the nearest moon no matter what it is
- We head to the nearest dead moon and try to hide out in the the geography
- We head to the nearest Core world, intending to confront the Alliance about this outrage
- We head to the nearest Rim moon of XXXXXX where the populace doesn't like the Alliance
- We look head to the border planet of XXXXXX and get in contact with XXXXX to try to figues out what's going on
- We head for the nearest independent space station and try to mail off our cargo
- We head for a Rim World inteanding to find some slavers to sell our new cargo to
- We look for a remote but habitable moon to set up a military encampment from which to begin a New Independence movement
- We get on the Core-Tex and start trying to figure out what is happening since the Miranda broadcast, intending to join up and help any breakaway factions
etc...
Everyone (not just Trey) needs to try to imagine themselves in that situation. What input would you give? What would you want to do? What would you be desperate to know, what would you care about?
A couple of players can't carry this game forever, folks. Please give some inputs.
Candleman
29th of March, 2009, 08:03
I'd say we do a combination: We head to a Rim moon where the Alliance is frowned upon so that we have less questions asked about our cargo, and we get on the Cortex to figure out what's going on about this Miranda broadcast.
I think those are the two biggest problems right now--The Miranda broadcast and our cargo. If we can settle somewhere far from prying eyes but with enough civilization around to replenish our stocks and get a feel for the response to the broadcast, we'll stand a better chance of making informed decisions.
Arthur has had enough of the Alliance, but he's not keen on fighting any war anytime soon.

I agree with Candleman on the next move. I think we should find a well traveled space lane to high our tracks run up stream and then head to a remote Rim world to restock, find out what's going on with Miranda, and deal with our cargo.

All right, there was 10 days available for people to post between Trey's last post and now. My large post should have prompted at least basic activity from most everyone, at least one post (other than Trey who already did).
From my perspective it seems like the players have lost interest in the game. I'm not going to carry it by endless automoving.
Please post and let me know whether you are still interested enough in this game to continue. If it's just a matter of needing more time and RL being busy, we can take a break in hopes of reviving it later. But if it's your #19 priority in a busy life, let's just either let it go, or each player should just man up and bow out, letting the active players play.

I am deeply sorry for my absence; I went on a weeklong trip to visit colleges and failed to inform anyone at all. School has also been somewhat time-consuming, as it ever is, but I admit that laziness on my part has been the root cause.
I do very much enjoy the game, however, and I hope that we can continue. I've made another post which I hope makes up for my tardiness.
Wired*Nun
22nd of April, 2009, 23:41
Thanks for responding, guys. I will keep on with it as long as I get some play from people and it's fun.
Just to reiterate something that I believe I said in some form in my play style and philosophy thread, but maybe this is more explicit: While it's not a hard and fast rule, I expect that most of my posts, especially the posts like this one that move the story forward in summary, should be answered by a post from every player, even if it's just a summary of your character's activity or thoughts during that time.
If nothing else, this reassures the GM that you are still there and his efforts are not falling into a void. But it also keeps the back-and-forth going and prompts others to post in return.
It's the difference between a dinner party where the conversation's flowing, and one attended in silence. For me, it's an important part of the game.
- P.S. Having just read the two posts by David and Candleman...maybe I should chew your asses more often. Excellent posts!

I count eight current crew members. Is this correct? I'm curious, at this point, with six crew cabins how everyone is arranged/appointed on the ship?
Right now I was guessing my guy, if/when he comes in, might try and work out some sort of deal for the shuttle like Inara from the series... but now I'm curious as to the general arrangements.

If it helps, Arthur could have a cot set up in the engine room, since he finds the sounds of the engine peaceful. That clears up at least one spot. I also thought Greta slept in a passenger cabin, but I could be wrong.
Wired*Nun
29th of April, 2009, 00:28
Yusheng is in the "captain's cabin," now the owner's cabin, her home.
Greta was in the small passenger cabin since she started off as a passenger intending to crew.
Sam, Arthur, Abi, Earl, Will, Xavier...that's six.
If we have to make room for someone else, we can have them double up or use more passenger cabins.

I was all ready to get to posting today when I got an e-mail dredging up some interpersonal drama with a tabletop game I am playing in, and it knocked me for an emotional loop. One of those things where you never knew it was a problem until it was too late and the people involved (except me) have already hardened their positions to the point they don't want to work it out.
Sigh.

Hi all,
I've e-mailed Dave to see how he's doing. Unfortunately he still doesn't feel up to posting, although he hopes this will change. He says to apologize to everybody here.
I don't know about all of you, but I've been there as well. Sometimes the mere thought of posting is too much. So I understand and I'll keep waiting, no problem. If he picks up again – great! If not – pity, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.
Anyway, now you all know what’s going on :)

I apologize again for taking so long. I've concluded that GMing tabletop is bad for my online GMing. I get creatively exhausted, especially when I am GMing WOD in both media, for example.
Another GM will be taking over from now on so I will be thankfully reduced to simply playing for a while. This is a good thing.
I am not sure if I am going to reanimate the Serenity game. I feel like it's the least cohesive and least interesting to me, so for now, this game is on permanent hiatus. That way I'll be able to focus on the other two.

I understand. I get the same way when I play in too many games; I can't focus on one game enough and I feel like I'm not putting enough in.
You were a great DM, I must say. Probably the best I've played with in terms of how you run your games. If you ever need a player, I'd love to be a part of your story.
