Me..i wouldn't..I don't know about anyone else..but i wouldn't Wizards are completely different in every aspect of sorcerors...if you make a wizard for 2nd ed...then try to convert your sorceror is going to quickly be out matched by most creatures in 3rd ed... You'd be better off just making a new one.

you asked this question on the 3ebb
Don't ask here just becuase you didn't get the answer you wanted there

Very few people would allows a 2nd ed wizard to become a 3rd sorceror

If you really want to change over then take a look at Relics and Rituals, they have a ritual which allows Wizard levels to be traded for sorceror levels, although there is a chance that your DM won't allow it

I wanted to get a general feel for how other DMs would handle that request...I may allow 1st edition arcane spellcasters to convert to sorcerers...I'm leaning in that direction..

Most likely not, Wizards and Sorcerers are two different things, and even though they where not in 2nd Edition I wouldn't allow it. I would though the character covert his character to a wizard and begin to pick up sorcerer levels, it depends on what level they are on, if its high it won't be worth it, but if they are only on first or second level then it might work well.

So either the above, or I would let the player create a new character of equal or lower level (equal for low levels, say 1st to 5th, but gradually lower from then on)

I think I'll allow it..he needs all the "survivability" he can get..he may value this pc more as a sorcerer..instilling a "will to live" as it were..
