I love visuals and have hundreds of pics on my computer that I use and want to use in my games. But there are many that are just begging for a description (stats, background, purpose) that I can't wrap my mind around. So...I'm turning to you fellers and your boundless imaginations. Here's one I've been chewing on for a long time. Have at it!

To my mind this stands out as the following...

Uber-Badass tribal witchdoctor from the high steppes of (insert region name here).

He is a peerless master of alchemy having concocted many unique variations of standard alchemical equipment of his own design over the past 80 years or so. Also, through many decades of searching the far reaches of the world (and the planes themselves) he has uncovered many powerful ancient recipes designed by old gods and other beings of power that have the potential to change the very fabric of warfare and the traditional way wars are fought. [Weapons of Mass Destruction Baby!!]

Uber-Badass Witch Doctor has just returned from a very dangerous planar adventure where has secured a very powerful formula that he plans to use to take over the world! In addition he has been raised to a demi-god status by defeating the keeper of some forgotten relic of power (perhaps his funky hat?) and taking his divine spark (and the relic of power) as his own.

His armies are amassing in secret and very soon the world will wish they had never been born.

Just a rough (and small) idea that came to mind in about .003 seconds after seeing the picture. That is a great pic man! Where'd you find that jewel?

Statistics... Adept20? ...or... Sorcerer20.
Race? Humanish? Maybe some sort of extraplanar blood? Perhaps he's a quarter celestial blood and quarter dragon blood. One parent having been a half celestial/half brass dragon, the other human.

Hmmm... Equipment....

Atom-Bomb-Powered Alchemist Fires? 20d12 pure energy damage (bypassing all hardness and resistances or damage reductions) across a... what? 10 mile radius? ............... Save for half damage? Haha...

Other super-unique alchemical suprises and some wicked wand of some sort. I don't know why, but I imagine him with a wicked-twisted-bone-white-ashwood wand.

Any help?

The Hivemaster

Part man, part bee, the Hivemester was created by a mad wizard who sought to combine humans and giant wasps in order to produce a peerless flying human warrior, immune to mind-affecting magics and capable of producing his own nourishment in the form of honey.

Sadly, the Hivemaster turned out to be more human that wasp-human, except for his head and his affinity for bees and yellow colors. He has a strong bond with the little insects, allowing him to control bees and regular wasps with ease. The Hivemaster sometimes cannot resist his instincts and orders his bees to strike back at anyone who dares injure a bee.

In general, though, he is a jolly nice fellow. The constant buzzing that seems to follow him around tends to disturb people, however, as does the fact that he is able to talk to bees and related insects. He even befriended a giant wasp and uses it as a mount as he and his bees travel from city to city, peddling jars of high-quality honey.

DarkSun

Spice Merchant.

Adorned in Masterwork Desert Hide armor.

He confidently sells his magical spice he harvests from a strange regional desert Beetle.

He has a lavish lifestyle and swagger only a man who has made his own fortune can boast. There is a fierceness in his eyes suggesting the bandits and competition that must have been put down to achieve such success.

That would be my take for an NPC.

I liked that ... So how about another?

I like the picture but I have to say not very moved by the characters.

The pair of woman appear to be gypsies.
The older sagely type and the youger more seductressy type.
I can't let go of the stereotypes.

Nice pic though... Same illustrator?

The fey-touched daughter of a local lord of the land sits in the wilderness and dreams of a free life without all the trappings of civilized life. As far as she knows, she is an ordinary human, but her mother who died giving birth to her had fey blood in her. She is dreading the thought of being married off to some man she doesn't know and going to live with him in a far-away land that she doesn't know. She is terrified, but... rather than running away she stays. Why you ask? Because the love of her little step-brother prevents her from it. The boy adores her and she adores him. They are the best of buddies. She would feel she is abandoning him to a fate much worse than hers. For that, she endures and hopes and dreams. Little does she know that she has latent magical abilities that are going to spring forth soon and turn her life inside out...

That's a very nice painting, but it has some rather jarring bits to it. Specifically, the bend in the right elbow makes the skin look unnatural and rubbery and her fingers don't cast a shadow.

More on topic, she's apparently looking at someone. So perhaps she has a friend with her who can paint.

A young, doe-eyed harlot, bought and paid for, is escorted to a nearby glen where her "john" begins to take off his clothes. She watches in fascination, not because that is what she is paid to do, but because when this "man" begins to disrobe, she sees that he is not really a "man" at all. And although she has never been with anyone but a human, she cannot help but be aroused and excited by this creature standing before her.

A typical feral female bad guy who is supposed to be considered really hot and would generally give straight males pause in finishing her off in reality but will be dispatched without a second thought by the good and mighty PCs, who will never wonder at how impossibly convenient it was that her tiny and seemingly pointless rags somehow continued to cover her nipples and reproductive organs despite the fact that they were practically falling apart to begin with and chopping her up would have definitely finished them off.

Chain reaction of inspiration! I just got ideas for the first four images, almost at the same time. I want to share--yet I also want to use them myself here on ORP! :O

As for the latest picture, it's clearly an annis hag with lots of cleric levels, heading an army of hobgoblin ghouls that she has summoned with the help of the other hags in her covey--who are also annis hag clerics. The PCs will have a heck of a time defeating her and halting her army... not only because of her high level and steely skin, but because the other hags can also disguise themselves in the same form, and have a small cache of diamonds with which to resurrect each other!

Can the PCs defeat a warlord that always seems to return to life? Find out if anyone decides to run this adventure seed!

hedgeknight
5th of March, 2009, 13:48
She's awful purdy for an annis hag. :fun:
But use 'em all, LeadPal - let's see some creative goodness!

Nice pic, Link - here's my take on her:

Anastasia the Red, Hand of Asmodeus - a former paladin who embraced evil and began to worship Asmodeus when she returned home from a holy crusade to find her entire village, including all of her family, dying from a plague. The town's high priest cursed the people and his god, blaming the deity for turning his back on his faithful children...and urging Ana to see a truer path of devotion to revenge the curse put upon her family and village.

Thus, she wandered in search of herself and her soul and found comfort in her dreams which were often visited by the avatar of Asmodeus. Her fragile mind and spirit were open to his suggestions and before long, she found herself prostrate in devotions to the evil god.

Etc, etc, but that gives you a picture...at least from my mind's eye. ;)

Comfort? Maybe it's just hot out and the bikini was the best attire?

Shoelip
5th of March, 2009, 14:08
First it's not a Bikini, it's a Brazier with an uncomfortable collar attached, a thong, and an open fronted skirt. Secondly her arms are wrapped in leather with metal plates attached...

I'm sorry, lead poisoning still sounds allot more plausible.

Linklegacy77

It is magical, gives her a +10 to AC while wearing it, thus she tossed her full plate for it.

Or she felt she needed to seduce the opposing general?

Shoelip
5th of March, 2009, 15:32
Magic underwear, fine, if it's sane enough for religion it's sane enough for a Fantasy RPG but once again, why arm armor?:S

Mercutio
6th of March, 2009, 04:37
Because her arms are the most likely parts of her body to be hurt while in combat?

Also - if you look, it's because she was wearing a dress which has now been shredded. That's why there is fabric behind the collar and there are remnants of a dress around her waist.

Shoelip
6th of March, 2009, 06:56
Ah, see, I thought that was just a skirt with an open front. Although if she was at all concerned about armoring herself because of potential damage she would not start with her arms and leave all the vital organs exposed. Unless of course she was suffering from possibly lead induced insanity. She's also apparently got a metal collar around her neck with a ring in it like something that'd be used to attach a chain. So she's a lead poisoned former slave who has become leader of a great army and never thought to change her clothes throughout all of this. She's gotta smell really bad...

Alright, I think the points have been made on both sides of the chainmail bikini debate. No need to keep on about it.

hedgeknight
6th of March, 2009, 08:24
Her arms are not made of flesh...they are metal or something else, or perhaps they are hideously scarred or burned thus the need for a cover up.
Do we really care? :)
When you see her in battle a part of your brain wants to kill her and another part of your brain signals your wank and says, "If we could just convert her to our cause..." :D

That image will work perfectly for an NPC I've envisioned for years: a mage seeking to use the Far Realm for good, whose visage has become a horrifying reflection of the sea of nightmares that he has seen. Will his transformation continue? Will his sanity ever fail? Will his sacrifices be appreciated? And will the power that he gains truly compensate for the utter loss of his humanity?

elmer_jok

This picture gives me ideas for someone truly powerful, I'm talking epic.

Her human parents gave birth to Akaya in the midst of an invasion and through a wild set of experiences led her to be raised by a sect of Githzerai in a monastery in Limbo. She was taught the life of a monk and been on many adventures in the multi verse seeking The Most Perfect Objects Of True Order, ancient relics of her order known more commonly as The Truths, to restore her order's past prominence and renown. Her race has been cause for much tension in her life, but she has managed to prove herself in every challenge put before her and despite this gap between herself and the Gith has risen to a very high rank within the order. She has been tattooed by powerful glyphs, secrets of her order, that protect her from many of the dangers of the Planes and give her powers of great insight. Her robes and mask are other relics of the order, given to only the highest of understanding of The Truths, that both mark her rank within the order and give her many exceptional physical traits of other beings of the Multi verse like the tough hide of an Ancient Gold Dragon and the strength of a Titan.

In this picture you see her investigating one of The Truths to gain the insights of its power and attune her clan with it and synchronize its power with other Truths her clan is already in possession of. The Rose, one of the eleven Truths, symbolizes Perfect Love for her clan and the affect of its powers upon her clan she hopes will help those that raised her to finally accept her as one of them fully. Little does she know though that she is in a dangerous struggle because of her personal desire for love and acceptance. If she doesn't let the Will of the clan win out over her own personal Will The Rose will be lost as well as her mind.

She's like a 27th level monk I'm thinking, but the Truths she and her clan are already attuned to give her many powers of other classes like the sorcerer and druid as well as many protections.

What kinda invasion? A Githyanki invasion?

elmer_jok
12th of May, 2009, 06:20
Well this was my first thought, but I've been thinking of something else more elaborate since posting that.

Perhaps the Gith's involvment was as allies of the main invasion forces and not the ones actually doing the invasion. Through monastery connections of monk orders a Githzerai and a human became very close friends and when later in life this invasion happened this Gith's friend's family was slain in the attacks and the Gith adopted his friend's daughter (the sole survivor of her family - a big family we'll say) and wisked her away to safety. Through some other extraordinary circumstances that I haven't quite got to thinking on yet he gets his monk clan to accept her into the order.

That's a little of what I got so far on this idea. I think I may form this into an adventure plot of some sort. Thanks for the inspirational picture imimrtl! What's its source do you know?

Shoelip
12th of May, 2009, 10:13
I think it'd be easier to get her accepted if her family was wiped out by a Githyanki breeding invasion. From time to time the Githyanki will mount massive invasions into the material planes. Conquering and enslaving entire nations in order to securely incubate their eggs which can't hatch in the Astral plane thanks to the lack of time flow. Githyanki are really really not nice... like seriously.

I see the collar with the ring not as a sign of a former slave but a current one.

Hidden behind the beautiful visage beats the heart of a beast. Just let off the chain and you tore her dress? HER ONLY DRESS!!?! Just wait for it, berserker rage is coming to kick your ass.

And why no armor on her body? She's a barbarian 20, light armor and all that jazz. More importantly its the way master likes it. Not like he's worried about losing her. He has others.

And why protect the arms? Dead she is gone, armless he would actually have to put her down. Useless and too painful. Eh, I'm reaching here.

Ryoko is a Mulani descended Red Wizard. She recently lost both her parents to a pair of freak "accidents." First the local potion shop exploded when an apprentice was attempting a rather mundane feather fall token. Her mother just started working recently, the cost of Ryoko's wizard training was becoming prohibitively expensive. Two days later she came home to drawings and arcane writings carved into their family table and no father to be found. His murder was labeled a robbery gone wrong. There was an immediate cremation when the town guard suspected poison/plague or some type of madness involved. But the young Mulani recognized some of the scars carved into her father's cadaver. Some were healed and old, some very fresh.

With large dreams of re-claiming the glory of the Red Wizards that her parents raised her on, she copied down the drawings and continued her father's work. She found out more and more of an unnamed deity. Of its terror inducing qualities and stories of his minions already living on the current plane. She would find this octopus faced creatures and bargain with them. They would help her gain the power to restart the reign that the greedy idiot Szass ended. Her staff has been formed to honor the tentacled race, she is not sure she can do it without them...

I realized I hadn't put links in, or explained ArtOrder. It's a community of artists that was created through an old blogspot blog by the art director for Wizards of the Coast, Jon Schindehette. It started as an insight into the world of an AD and what was necessary to make it as an artist. It's still that, but its reach has grown by leaps over the last year. I'm not a visual artist by any means, but I like to see the process.

Conversely I would explain this one so:

Amita a devout cleric of Lakshmi and/or Sarasvati. After decades of study in the glory of her gods, Amita has reached a point in her path where she has decided to erect a temple of her own in honor of her patron deities. This particular image captures her in the throws of her divine magics as she causes the earth (namely marble) to gracefully rise up into an edifice of learning and worship.
