... me running a private server of World of Warcraft?
I've been playing around with a private server on my own computer, and from what I can tell, it is pretty damn stable and bug free. So, I've been researching the possibility of running it on the same server as ORP is on, and it looks perfectly possible.
Ofcourse, playing a MMORPG on your own is not how it's supposed to be played, so I'm wondering how many people would be interested in playing WoW for free?
Keep in mind that the world of WoW is so damn large, that it will require planning to play with others on a private server (unless the playerbase grows to 200-ish).
EDIT: Oh, and before you ask, I prefer blizzardlike settings (so normal xp and item drops) except maybe for an increased drop of money to compensate for the lack of auctions (again, unless the playerbase grows).

Stop trying to push your electronic drugs on people. They destroy lives, we already lost on Orp Admin to it. Just say no!

Maybe, if I can fix my computer to let me play games. And if I suddenly get some free time.

Pfft, a private server isn't as addictive as the real deal. Supposedly...

I'm not sure WoW holds much appeal for me. I used to play UO, and it was so wonderful and open that nothing else has been fun since.

Odd, that's exactly how I feel since having played WoW (at least in regard to every RPG I play now)

I don't believe rp should be mentioned in the same sentence as WoW.
I know people who 'lost' time to that game and I know of others who are in a rather bad shape in RL, don't have a job and spend most of their time with that game. Sure, it's not quite fair to blame it on the game itself, but I only have bad connections to it.
To stay on topic: Never played the game, never will. :)

I've been playing the game for a couple years now. It gets old quick unless you do have folks to play with, especially since multiple quests and dungeons require grouping. Friends are the only reason I'm still playing it.
Much like regular RP, it's a decent hobby, but yeah, there are people who devote too much time to it. They also devote too much time to other video games, or surfing online instead of doing homework or going to work. I've never found it difficult to simply log off when needed. Or post to various sites anyway in between killing things while I am playing.

Yes, that's all nice and dandy, but would you play on a private server? :)

I tried setting up a private server for my friends and the whole thing turned out to be crap. Combat was was different (since they had to emulate lots of things) and talents didn't even work. Supposedly the version you have is fairly bug free?
I'd be interested in jumping onto a private server, though I don't see myself playing a ton.

Would I want to play? Yes.
Would I play? No. No money or job.
God's telling me to get a job again...
We should have a private CS:S server! Yes! Lol.

Private WoW servers are free. Hence their illegality.

I would be able to score about 6-7 additional addicts for teh cause.

Just to clarify: Running the private server is not illegal, it was created completely by reverse engineering and does not contain content copyrighted by Blizzard. Connecting to a private server however, is against the EULA and thus illegal in most countries, but since it is undoable for Blizzard to take action against individuals, your changes of getting in trouble are extremely low.

I'd consider playing in a private server, but really only to mess around with things that you can't mess around with in a public server (I.E. GM stuff).
The only real reason to play is to play with friends and other people. Private servers defeat that purpose, and so need to bring something else to the table to be worth using.

Unfortunately the GM stuff gets old after about 10 minutes. They really don't have super amazing powers beyond spawning creatures, changing models, and changing sizes of models. They can teleport too... but the coordinate stuff is very weird and you have to look up the coordinates of where you want to go every time which is annoying.
I rather enjoy WoW in small and cost-free doses, so resurrecting my druid would be fun.
It would be good to have everyone all on the same faction and in the same guild, though, just for logistic reasons. One thing I hated about WoW was the number of morons running around so it'd be nice if the server was really just for this community and thus limited the amount of retarded 12 year olds hitting on my character.

The teleporting does not necessarily involve coordinates anymore, you can create anchors and then use the name of that anchor to teleport to the respective coordinates.
I've been playing a warlock through to lvl 12, and have noticed that there are several bugs (like the quest for getting a voidwalker not being available and my imp not being saved (thus changing name everytime I summon him)). I'm going to check wether these kind of bugs are easily fixed in the linux version (and learn some more C++ while doing so). If fixing proves too cumbersome, then I'm not going to bother with this after all.

One big problem with private servers is talents not working and all. You should check to make sure your talents are working for several classes while you're at it.
Likewise, warriors tend not to ever gain rage in private servers and other weird things happen with mana/hp/energy regen that either makes a class unplayable or unstoppable.
Fixing will probably be incredibly difficult, considering the people working on it haven't even done it yet. I imagine the amount of code involved is astounding.

When was the last time you tried all this? If it wasn't too long ago, I'm betting most of these bugs still exist...
Maybe I should just pay for WoW like I used too.

It's actually been a while since I've done the private server thing, which is why I'm hopeful that people have managed to fix the errors.
The problem I've seen in my following of the private server stuff is that the groups making these things tend to flare up and die down fairly frequently, so getting a consistent group working on bug fixes is difficult which is why I'm worried that the most common problems back in the day might still exist.
Likewise, what version WoW is it you're trying to run? I assume it's from a long time ago if it's stable (like pre-BC).

Actually, it is BC 2.3.3
The emulator is called Ascent.

If you're interested, I can jump on the server sometime and give a whirl to see if I catch any bugs. Just shoot me a PM with the info if interested.

Nah, I'm pretty sure by now that bugs start appearing after lvl 10, about 30% of the talents work, class-specific quests aren't working properly. I'm going to not bother after all.
Sorry to get your hopes up :(

I'm doing that now, for 10 free days. On the Terenas realm, should you care.
