View Full Version : D&D 3.5 - The Chosen One

Greetings fellow RPG-ers!
I have decided to run a game on these forums, based on a game I once participated in in real life. The premise follows below (yes, I know it will look like a HUGE cliche, just keep reading).
------------
A young boy (or young girl, if you can make it work for me), ignorant of his true destiny, currently lives his life in unaware of what is to come. For when an ancient evil begins to stir, one must stand in its path - or the world shall fall to darkness.
------------
In this story is all the makings of a classic fantasy story - boy begins as a nobody, discovers magical item/hidden power (or both), is taught by various people, becomes powerful, and prevents a mighty evil from destroying the world. He may even fall in love!
I'll need at least three players to start with, and a potential fourth.
The Hero - Starts off small, doesn't know much about the world, but eventually is in place to save it.
The Sage - Operates as a mentor to The Hero, most likely will have some measure of magical ability.
The Companion - Additional person who joins the hero, often is a sly, devious person.
So then, who would like to play in a game where the fate of the world may very well rest in your hands?
Once I have interested people, I'll get the forum set up, and at that point, I will discuss character creation rules (as they will vary slightly for each character).
Cheers,
-PsionicFox

What about someone who is there as emotional support. There because they want to look after him/her. Virtuous type. Kind, supportive, fighter or paladin maybe. (could end up dying at some point to save the hero's life and in a way that helps to shape his/her destiny).
It just popped in my head.

Hmm...how about the Childhood Friend who either ends up becoming an enemy or a love interest? Potentially both.

How about the psionic assassin hired to hunt down and slaughter the hero and all he holds dear?
(pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?)

The Sage fills that role, mostly, but the game may very well be a companion-collecting game, starting with the Sage, gaining the Sly companion, and going from there.

The 4th slot I was planning on would be taken by the love interest (This could be combined with the idea above - at least if the LI was something like an Elf, anyway).

Psionic assassin? Maybe not. You're welcome to pick up the 'Sly' companion though, if you wish. Who knows, he may discover some ancient form of magic that works in a way that 'normal' magic does not.
Anyhow, who's interested in the idea? I need 3 players to start with, and then we can get into the nitty gritty.

I just figured a fighter/paladin mentor to teach him how to fight too might be good. (plus i'm no so good with magic) and the other ideas didn't grab me as much as a me thing.

Sounds like a plan - I just figured out the way I'd make it work, so I'll green-light the role. Assuming I get people interested in the other roles of course! I may in fact replace the Sage role with your character, and get rid of the 'Magic-User Mentor' concept entirely... We still need a hero though.

Is hero taken? I'm a n00b anyways so it fits. I'll take whatever class you want me to. I could start as a level Zero Human with some kind of magic sword or something that marks me as the chosen one.

If the game starts at a low level (like, 3 or less), I might play the companion. I'm imagining someone sly and devious, but with the best interests of the hero at heart. Perhaps magical, since the sage is now a fighter?

That's no fun.
How about the regular assassin devoted to hunting down the hero and everything he holds dear?
pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?
(maybe the demonic assassin? Oh! how about a werewolf assassin? Vampire? Monkey? C'mon!)

If you need another player, for a fourth character or something, I'm totally up for it.

The 4th (or even 5th if more good support concepts come along) could be the 'true love' of the hero or something. Perhaps she could be the magical one?
Seems like Wheel of Time to me...

Video games have done this plot to death, if you need some inspiration for characters just look up any number of them. Especially Baldur's Gate. Though I would also suggest strongly Suikoden V. Also, almost every shonen anime in existance.
By the way, I'm interested in this game if you need anyone else.
I could play the hero pretty well since I play allot of video games and watch allot of anime.:fun:
I could also play a companion, like the somewhat sleazy womanizing secondary mentor who joins him later when he's been separated from his primary one and gets him into and out of all sorts of trouble.
His best friend/rival who may or may not get jealous of him and try to gain power through less scrupulous means.
The mascot character that seems to be there only for comic relief but later shows some hidden power, or doesn't.
The mysterious younger looking character that holds great secrets.
A ripoff of Jr. from Xenosaga that I really can't fit into any specific cliche.
A protective older relative of some sort, probably sibling.
A younger sibling who is always getting into trouble.
The strong silent protector of some other companion or just happens to take it upon himself to defend the MC, and has the highest HP in the party.
The badass loner that is inexplicably drawn to the party.
A character that looks just like the main character but has a very different personality.
Some sort of grizzled ship captain or something....
A sentient large animal that isn't cute/funny enough to be a mascot but is instead a major damage dealer.
Hey, if the MC ends up being female that'd be fantastic. I love new takes on old trends.

I'm just posting to say that I will be responding to everyone in a big mega-post when I get home in a few hours.
See you all then!

Some good ideas have been bandied about, I'll try and respond to them here.
Exe: Companion No. 1 will be a combatant - possibly some kind of Fighter/Paladin (or Knight/Paladin maybe). If you like, this can be you. You'll take on the role of mentor and general moral compass, if you like.
Sinbad/Shoelip: The Hero role is open, although I may make this the 'heroine' role - just to do something different.
Lead: Yes, the game will be starting low, but not everyone will be at the same level. I have no problem with you playing the 'sly but with the best intentions' character - they're always fun.
Link: No, no assassins. Evil characters will not be played by the players in this game. Sorry dude.
Wisp: If you want to play the Love Interest (which may be male, if we run with the heroine), you're more than welcome. Right now we're missing a spellcaster (of any kind), are you interested in that?
Elmer: Are you interested in slot 4/5, and or the love interest?
I'll be requesting forum shortly where we can discuss things more.

Well if I did play the hero I'd probably want to be male. I don't think I could play a female character satisfactorily.
What did you think of the mascot idea? Maybe some small creature with an attitude like Crow from The Longest Journey?

I'd be willing to be the love interest, and could play a male or female character for that, whatever is needed for that role. I would also love playing a magic user, so I'm totally down for that as well.

My idea for the companion is a jealous clingy girl who is obviously wrong for the hero but is determined to get him anyways. If the hero is going to be a heroine, though, it might be a little... odd. ;) Eh, I say we let Shoe play the male lead.
And also, I'd like to play a spellcaster. There might be some dualism between the jealous girl and the real love interest if they're both casters; one a black magician girl, and the other a staff chick. The true love need not be the second, either.

Tentative running players list:
Player - Role
Shoelip - Hero
Exedemon - Warrior companion/mentor
Leadpal - Sly companion/spellcaster/potential love interest.
Wisp - 'True love'/spellcaster.
That's enough to request a forum, methinks!

How about the creepy guy who is at every shop and tavern in the game?
And he somehow beats you there every time, and knows exactly which one you are going to next, even before you do?
Can I play him? ^^
Or how about the cat that you can't step over. If it's in your way, you MUST go around, you can't jump or walk over it. Then there's the slightly different colored ground you can't walk on, or the small ledges that are too much for you....

Oh me too!
Don't forget hordes of mindless NPCs who throw themselves onto your rusty dagger for no apparent reason and can't be reasoned with or even subdued without lethal force.
Also, the sadistic sultry woman who taunts the hero suggestively but dies anticlimactically without any character development.
