Sorry, just curious, what are Otaku?

Otaku are people who are into Japanese animation, both in video form (anime), and book form (manga). they might be considered fanatical about it, even.
Big Eyes, Small Mouth is a relatively new RPG, a completely different system from d20 or WoD. Guardians of Order is the company that produces this RPG
From GOO's homepage (http://www.guardiansorder.com/greengoo/besm.html);
BESM <Big Eyes, Small Mouth> is inspired by the dynamic settings and stories found in a wide range of anime shows, allowing players to create characters from any genre or sub-genre. Comedy or horror, fantasy or science-fiction, mecha action or passionate romance...if you can image it, you can play it.
Now, for those interested in the game, I have several disclaimers;
1. I am not really an Otaku, I just pretend to be. Yes, I've seen a good bit of anime, but I'm not obsessed. So, any vague references will, most likely be lost on me.
2. I just bought the 2nd Edition Revised rules last friday. While the system is pretty simple and easy to learn, I've yet to play it. I have created a few NPC's, just to get a feel for character creation, and i've done a couple of combats, but I hardly am an expert. So, you experts will have to bear with me, and help me along when I fumble.
3. I am open to any genre, but i'd rather not have an entirely comedic, super-powerful game. i'd like to see it last for a while, and neither of those two mentioned stipulations are good for a lasting campaign. some comical moments are inevitable, of course, and make the game fun for all, but i am planning on an intense plotline and character interaction to be the driving force.
So, that being said, I'm looking for 3-4 players who are articulate, can post everyday (roughly), and who can come up with original, anime-inspired characters. You can post basic stats/bio here and email any details you may want to keep a secret to saintalphonzocf3@yahoo.com
thanks,

Woohoo! A BESM game! I've got the book, just tell me how many points we'll be using, and what genre of anime we'll be gaming in!

see, therein lies the rub, i kinda want to get an idea of what genre everyone's interested in.
my original idea goes something like this,
1930's japan, roughly 10 years after the great tokyo earthquake. the chaos caused by the earthquake and the subsequent deaths has unleashed a wave of spiritual energy, spawning a small number of mutants and magic-users. the rebuilding from the devastation has ushered in a higher level of technology and militarism, meaning steam-punk-like robots would be available, but not commonplace.
this would leave a lot of room for different character types, but doesn't fit into one distinct genre.
what do you think?
<edit: character gen stuff>
1. 40 Character Points.
2. 14 to 18 CP should be spent on Stats; no Stat higher than 10.
3. no Attributes higher than Level 4.
4. maximum Bonus Points from Character Defects is 7. you can take more Defects if you wish, but you'll only get the first 7 points.
5. 20 Skill Points (Highly Trained Attribute adds 10 per level, Poorly Trained Defect subtracts 10 per level).
6. All General Skills are 2 Skill Points per level.
7. All Combat Skills are 4 Skill Points per level.

I'm not particularly interested in this one, but i'm guessing that Cadogan is gonna be spewing if he misses out on this...... ;)
If i liked anime more, then i'd have a go at it, but as it stands, I don't particularly like anime.. besides, there are more things for me to worry bout (such as WoD stuff and d20 stuff).

brian, if it helps,
the way mecha will work is such.
1. they will be statistically equivalent to those found in the book, even though the tech level is much lower. chalk it up to better materials and craftsmanship.
2. they will not be shiny stylized transforming chrome giants. more like a '55 Chevy that can walk and shoot a gatling-gun. think "Iron Giant pre-transformation" as opposed to "Gundam Wing".
3. the manufacture and, therefore, repair of these machines will be isolated to several key companies (construction/engineering) and/or government law enforcement agencies. you'll almost definitely have to be tied to one or the other groups, or be renegade from either.

yeah cadogan would love this game, as would I, for I am a huge anime fan. The only problem is that I don't have any of these rule books for BESM, is that ok?

I am thinking maybe a Rorouni Kenshin type character.......more samurai x kenshin rather then the series kenshin.

Well, I'm gonna do the mecha idea, and it would definitely make sense that it's owned by the military/government, and my character is tied down by a bit of red tape as well, considering he's one of the smartest in the world :cool: , and would kind of be cherished by the government.

General Description of Takuro:
Name (written family name, then first): Tonomura Takuro
Age: 25
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black
Height: 1.56m (5'2")
Weight: 58.06kg (128 lbs)
Looks: Takuro is a fairly handsome looking, but very lean and not very muscular man in his middle 20s. He wears a pair of glasses to correct his vision problem.
Personality: Takuro is a bookish character, and likes things scientific, complex, and mechanical creations. He is a very (and do I mean very) smart person, and is the leader of Japan's scientific rebirth into the new world as a major player. However, at times he has a haunted look in his eyes, as if he's staring into the past.
History: Takuro was born in the the early 20th century, and grew up in the middle of The Great War, in the middle of the fervor, nationalism, and patriotism that surrounded it. As a child, he cheered on the infantry sent to seize german ports in Asia, and watched in awe at the ships sent by the navy to assist British efforts in the Pacific.
At a young age, Takuro was separated from the rest of his classmates for disagreeing with the teacher on his grade's subjects in science and math, proving them wrong all the times until, at the age of 12, he was released from regular math and science classes and placed into advance classes, some even college level, where he constantly scored higher than the others around him.
However, not all was happy, as when the Great Tokyo Earthquake occured, his entire family perished, except for him, and he was placed into the watching care of the government, who had taken interest in the brain-child that was constantly out-performing those years above him.
The government, then, cared for the child, with the care of a minister's foster family, placing him through college, and, after his graduation, fully enrolled him in the government's research and design division, where he came up with the first idea of a man-tank that could walk as a man could, but take and deal the damage that an armored vehicle could, nicknaming it the mecha.
Over the years, he has elaborated upon the first original mecha, to create the current N-32 Taian prototype vehicle.
However, he owes all of his progress and funding to the government, and, being the leading name in Japan's, and the world's, scientific community, has to deal with those who feel the need to look after him and keep him safe from falling to harm.
Takuro stills sees, occaisonally in his dreams, his screaming and dying family as they were crushed by the tons of rubble, and has sworn he won't let anyone else close to him fall subject to such an event (hence, why he feels so strongly for his close girlfriend, the shy but friendly Norobuku Aiko).

nice, i'm still going through the points and making sure everything's where it should be, but i like it very well.
concerning the mech,
all newer model mecha, including yours, are equipped with a prototype power source developed by Kinrishi Yamamoto, a brilliant PhD mathematician and theoretical chemist. these power sources have undergone rigorous testing in the lab and in the field and are currently operating at 0.000001% defects. the secrets of the power source are highly guarded and the casing for the source, commonly referred to as "The Core", is impossible to get into, except at an approved, top-secret government location. the core gives some advantages and disadvantages.
+3 levels of Endurance. the mechanical parts must still be kept lubricated and ammo still has to be replenished, but the core's energy lasts for months, regardless of the amount of use. once the core is low on energy, a new core must be placed in the mecha, while the old one goes back for refueling.
the core itself is a Weak Point and Volatile. the attacker has a +4 difficulty to target it, but if an attack that hits the core lowers the mecha to zero or lower Health Points, the mecha has a 33% chance of exploding (1 or 2 on a d6). if the core is targeted and damaged while the mecha is in the negatives, there is a 33% chance the core (and mecha) will explode.
a damaged core can be replaced with a fresh one, but multiple requests for new cores after you blow out the old ones will be frowned upon.
that being said, if you want to go back and modify anything on the mech, i understand.

Sponkle:
i can help you to create a character, but it will require a thorough character background and history. some of the major needs will be;
major powers or skills, and how the character came to have them,
minor powers or skills, and how the character came to have them,
personality quirks, both positive and negative,
affiliations, enemies, family connections.

Nooooo! Not another scientist nearly on par with my character! :O oh well... my guy's the designer and creator of mecha, I guess the power plant maker can be someone else :smiling:
Anyhow, I wanted my character to have a bodyguard that's supplied to him by the government/military to protect him, that's why I took the Servant attribute, although I don't consider it a Servant in the respect that the soldier will do anything Takuro asks him to do, and the government can reassign him a new soldier without his consent.

Here is a quick overview of my character's Bio;
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Being 'recruited' as a child for military experiments, I found myself the subject of hideous test after hideous test. Soon my very being was being washed away by constant 'reform' programs and although I tried to remain aware of what was going on around my I found it harder and harder to remember who I was and where I came from.
The next 12 years where a blur to me as I drifted slowly towards and unconscience and cruel secret military life. Kill or be killed, complete your objective at all costs. Right, Wrong, there was no difference. Murder was simply a means to an unclear end.
They stepped up the testing and experiments... and we "let" them. I found myself in control of amazing and awesome powers, powers I could not explain. With a thought I could tear a man asunder with my fists, dispatch hordes of men with frightening speed and never once did I question the motives.
I was afraid, such power, such destruction, these where something new, something vastly different from a 9mm bullet or the sharpend blade of a combat knife. It was disgustingly cruel. And I stopped.
It was like opening my eyes for the first time, the blood red ground around me was thick with corpses, the foliage of the trees where stained with the red spray of departing souls. Infront of me stood a man, unarmed and fearful, he cowered from me. I looked down and in my hand was a gun and it was pointed towards him. I hestitated.
"K246! What is the problem! Complete the Assignment!" blared a familiar, and yet not, voice in my ear. "K036. Complete the Task!"
A bush to my right shifted and a young women strided forth, pistol drawn and ready. Before I could speak the muzzel flared, once, twice, thrice. And the man before me was dead.
I screamed, a scream of pain, of anguish of anger and I ran.
"246! Cease immediately! Cease! ...... 036; Stop him! use fatal force is nessesary, save his head."
And that is only the begining.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It needs work but I have a great idea for character developement.

Name: Himura Kenyu
Age: 55
AKA: Hitokiri Battousai, Jinto
Kenyu was born as Jinto, when Jinto was about 8 his parents died of Teburculosus. He was later sold to traders, one night the party was attacked by bandits. Killing everyone, the bandits had just one more person to kill, Jinto. He was rescued by a Rorouni (Travelling Swordsman), the Rorouni left Jinto, bathed in blood, the child wept. The next morning, the Rorouni returned to find that Jinto had buried all of the deceased, both bandits and traders. The Rorouni, Seiryu a master of the blade took Jinto under his tutulige and gave him the name of Kenyu, for Jinto was a child's name.
Years passed, Kenyu became strong, he wished to leave his training and fight for the greater good. To fight for the people, the just fight. Seiryu did not agree with what Kenyu wished to do, they parted, not on good terms.
Kenyu worked for the resistance as a hitokiri (assassin), to help dawn a new peace. His skills with using the sword were excellent and he earned the name of Hitokiri Battousai (master assassin).
10 years had passed, his hands now drenched in the blood of many. Kenyu seeks redemption, he is now a Rorouni traveling the land. He saw life as nothing, for the fight was for the good of Japan, he was nothing but a pawn. But now sees light where there was once darkness, for he shall not fall into such habits again.
For the next 33 years Kenyu settled down, living alone. Isolated in the mountains he continued his training. As he grew older, the darkness within his heart consumed him once more. Something he vowed never to happen, but did. He is now once more the Hitokiri Battousai (master assassin).
(Ok now I hope this fits with the setting you have in mind if not I will change it so it does. Yes this is extremely close to Kenshin's history but it was just so awesome I couldn't help myself. Although I did make it so it had a more realistic timeline to it, to try and fit with the date. :))

Later that same year Teto and Yuri are murdered and Yushi is never found.
1919-1920: Operation K begins with 40 recruits. Yushi, age 6, is reduced to number and rank of K246. His memory periodically washed. His body constantly undergoing unnatural change. Training in the field is common, from Serbia, Russia, and Indochina. 18 K soldiers Survive. New York Stocks crash to a halt and world depression sets in. Operation K threatens to halt unless compromise is found.
1921-1925: Revenue made available by hireing out K soldiers as mercenaries for short term opperations. Training continues. Yushi is no more only K246 remains. Only K246: 18yr old, Japanese, Male and K036: 18yr old, British, Female remain. K246 experiences unknown flash back and experiences free will above control. Fails to complete assignment and flees into mainland Japan. K036 in pursuit.
Now: Yushi has no memory of his former life, but is haunted with infrequent flash backs. He knows nothing of Operation K and all the attrocities that have accured. All he does know is that he is wanted by a mysterious young women who appears in many guises and will stop at nothing to capture or remove him, although he holds no reason to harm her. With the Japanese Empire quickly spreading through China, Korea and the Pacific. Yushi must blend in and investigate the dreams which haunt him of his former life. Renamed himself Kay because of the tatoo on his upper right arm (Op. K Serial No.), he finds himself with strange abilities, such as incredable speed, accuracy, jumping and dodging abilities. The even stranger powers are more deadly and sinister. Who gave him these powers and why? Yushi now named Kay must find allies who can help him find the answers to all these questions.
Edit: Fixed a few mistakes in attributes (Linked (Attack), Super Strength) and fiddled with relivent skills. I think its finally done.

In hope of maintaining some sort of humanity, Kenyu ties a silk scarth to his Katana sheath. It was given to him long ago by one he loved dearlly. It nows serves the task she once performed, acting as his conscience, his humanity. Should this scarth be destroyed Kenyu would loose himself to the darkness which resides within himself, a Hitokiri Battousai (master assassin) with no conscience nor remorse is a deadly thing indeed.

Just a few things. Here is a BESM Errata, the first printing suffered all of these while the second printing suffered only a few mistakes. (find the printing on the first page under the credits)

For people without the book, you can get the gist of the system with this;

1) Cadogan and Sponkle:
i think you're doing skills incorrectly, or the very least in a way i'm not comfortable with... let me explain.
two examples, first from cadogan;
Gun Combat L1 (4)
- Pistol L3 (3)
Pistol is a specialization of Gun Combat, not a separate skill.
when you purchase a skill, you get to choose a specialty, and you can buy extra specialties for one skill point each, regardless of the original cost of the skill. so, the one skill point buys you one extra specialty, not levels in a specialty.
same thing with this example from sponkle;
Acrobatics L1 (2)
-Jumps L4 (4)
-Tumbling L4 (4)
again, no primary specialty has been chosen, but multiple skill points have been used to purchase levels in a subskill, when, according to what i've read, that's not how it works.
let me know if i've missed something, or if the explanations above are misleading.
2) Brian, Highly Skilled Lvl 4 is missing from your list of Attributes, but the skills work out such that i have to assume you spent character points for it. also, you've only spent 39 character points, even with the Highly Skilled factored in. Your mecha and servant are all copacetic.
3) sponkle, your katana/wakizashi (daisho) counts as only one item from personal gear, so you can have some other minor item.

I understand where you are coming from but as I don't have the rulebook I can't say who is right. I was just going by what cadogan was telling me about things. So you will have to talk to him. I will change my sheet once it is all cleared up anyway.

I can understand where you are coming from Saint, having re-read the Skills and Specialities Rules. I read it differently in the context that you could raise the level of your specialisation and leave the rest of the skills normal. (I was thinking in terms of "Martial Weapon Prof." = Skill, while "Weapon Focus" = Specialisation)
However, now that its clear I'll change it.
Sponkle, just deduct points you have from things like;
Melee L1 (4)
- Sword L4 (4) <-
and increase your Melee L1 to Melee L2 like this;
Melee L2 (8)
- Sword
For other skills just remember you get this many skills to relocate;
Acrobatics L1 (2)
-Jumps L4 (4) <-
and that Normal Skills are 2/level, Combat are 4/level
Saint Alphonzo
14th of August, 2002, 02:01
don't forget to pick a specialty for each skill, not each level of skill, so, taking Sponkle's Acrobatics skill as an example;
Acrobatics L1 (2)
-Jumps L4 (4)
-Tumbling L4 (4)
total skill points spent = 10
you could have
Acrobatics L4 (Jumps, Tumbling)
and 1 skill point left over,
Acrobatics L4 = 8 skill points (2 per level)
Jumps specialty = free with purchase of skill
Tumbling specialty = 1 point
so, on any Acrobatics skill check, you'd get a -4 bonus, and on any Acrobatics skill check concerning jumping or tumbling, you'd get a -5 bonus.
let me know if you need any help reassigning skill points, and when the approporiate modifications have been made, please notify me.

Im all done, and having looked at Sponkles Sheet he looks all done too.
I actually realised I needed to add specialisations for skills I had not choosen them for. So when I did, I often had to add multiple specialisations to keep in theme, it ended up in me over spending by 6 points and having to reduce a few skills here and there :(
Oh well. :)

i agree, i like the tri-stat very much, but i warn you again, i've only done some simple NPC-NPC combats and the like. may be a bit squeaky at first, but i'd like to think that the story will drive the game more than the system.
i'll request the forum as soon as i choose between the three names i'm mulling over.

Just a note, I had to relocate 4 Character Points because I misunderstood the purpose of the Light Armour attribute (having read Heavy Armour I now do.) also because I already had Flak Jacket with Personal Equipment and since both dont stack it was sort of redundent so I relocated the 4 points to other attributes i've already taken (Speed, Jumping, Special Movement and Kensei.)

Well, I hate to do this so close to the acquisition of a new forum, but I was looking over my mecha-boy, and after careful decision and thinking about him, I decided I really didn't want to play the overly-serious, bookworm character. I've done that too often. However, I have a different character all made up and ready, and it should provide some gender diversity into the group :)

General Description of Noriko:
Name (written family name, then first): Shibata Noriko
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black
Height: 1.48m (4'11")
Weight: 40.36kg (89 lbs)
Blood Type: O
Looks: Noriko is a young girl in her late teens, and is in her last year of secondary school, which explains why she wears a schoolgirl outfit most of the time, consisting of a white skirt with black trim, black turtleneck, and a white with red trim "kerchief" (closest term I could come to). If you've seen Card Captor Sakura, the outfit's like that, only without the hat. Noriko is of a light build, her measurements are 77cm/55cm/79cm for those of you who'd care :), and is considered very cute by many of her peers. When not wearing her school uniform, she is normally wearing a traditional kimono, and helping her mother and grandmother around the house. Her waist-length hair is normally done up into buns to hide the cat ears she has (despite her friends accepting many of the semi-humans following the Great Tokyo Earthquake, she likes to avoid those people who would single her out for such features), and keeps her tail tucked down into her skirt.
Personality: Noriko is best described as "genki", being full of energy and going wherever the wind may take her. She takes this approach towards her studies as well, bounding from book to book, assignment to assignment, but she can generally be counted upon to complete the task, no matter the cost, she's made sure she does because of a personal vow. She also looks on the bright side of everything, making sure that she can find the silver lining of any dark cloud in her life. However, more and more recently, she has become a little more grim when not interacting with others due to the startling dreams she has been having...
History: Noriko was born in 1914, just before the Great War started, to her parents Shibata Kenjin and Shibata Yumi, who lived in Tokyo. At the young girl's presentation to one of the Shinto shrines in Tokyo at the age of 5, the monk who resided there took great interest and, with the parents' permission, inscribed a tattoo on the young girl's back, soothingly telling the child screaming in pain that "she would be one given the power to protect, or harm, it would be her path, Japan some day in her life."
Noriko never understood the reasoning behind the painful writing on her back for most of her young life, but she always enjoyed showing it to her friends, and getting the 'oohs' and 'aahs' that accompanied seeing the elaborate writing.
Until she was 9 years old, that is... that was when the Great Tokyo Earthquake struck, unleashing the magical energies that had lain dormant underneath the Earth, and sending them into the world once again, and Noriko found herself a possessor of the energies, but with two drawbacks: her father perished in the earthquake, working as a volunteer fire fighter and trying to save those people trapped in the rubble, requiring Noriko and her mother to move into Noriko's grandmother and grandfather's house, and she now possessed the physical attributes of the semi-nekojin that now inhabited Japan, having grown a pair of black cat ears and a black tail (about .6m long) because of the energies that suddenly flashed through the country.
However, over the next few years, she began to manifest a series of power that dealt with the manipulation and control of the air and wind that surrounded her.
On occaison, she has used these powers to assist the police in acquisition of criminals, to help out around the house, but more often to provide tricks and stunts for her friends at school. Genki girl, she most certainly is.

So we have a 17 year old Genki girl, who wields magical powers and attends school. An 18 year old youth who has extreme combat abilities for his age, is wanted by mysterious people, and who wields strange powers. And finally a 55 year guy with shiney sword and awesome fighting abilities.
