But what will my fragile ego do if we don't play that game? It needs validation!

If your in need of validation that way, then you better get posting.

Third place isn't very validating.

I'm working on it. You have to understand that I have yet to obtain the freakish ability of itches to repeatedly post without really saying anything.

This is a REALLY big thread. 80+ pages. That is a LOT of words. I'll try and catch up on the parts in the IC thread regarding this wizard stronghold, but I'll get up my character before anything else.

And what was this I heard earlier about one of the characters having a sibling named Ben?

Black Plauge
9th of March, 2004, 08:53
Cadrius had a brother named Ben who stole his girlfriend. He then killed Ben and the girlfriend and fell as a result.

Or something like that. I'd better let Cadrius explain.

Gralhruk
9th of March, 2004, 08:54
Keep BPs version in mind, though, as Cadrius will probably take 10 pages to say the same thing ;).

Gralhruk
9th of March, 2004, 08:57
Basically, the IC story is that Cadrius, Shade, Blarth, and Nicos set out from Karkas (a border town) to find Cadogan. Cadogan is a blind mage who was abducted from Karkas by a group of wizards that call themselves the Brotherhood of the Hidden Citadel.

Cadogan is actually a member of the Brotherhood, but the other characters don't know that. Since they aren't very trusting, they went to find him. After much trial and tribulation, we found the citadel and were welcomed with (more or less) open arms. That's pretty much where we are right now.

red_dr4g0n94
9th of March, 2004, 09:18
Hmmm....well, after seeing the rather magical inclination of this place, I can see Ben appearing in like this: He is a temporary guest to the wizards, probably becuase one of the wizards here is somehow related to a member of the group that Ben slaughtered. He had probably only recently arrived, probably just that morning, and would probably meet the party at the "dinner" scheduled for that night.

Cadrius
10th of March, 2004, 02:10
I'm feeling a little left out here

Har, har. Isn't his left arm missing?

Yes, that's a very succinct way to put it. Cadrius killed Ben and his betrothed in a duel gone awry.

The OOC thread is almost meaningless to read unless you're interested in the various inter-player conflicts we've gone through. The only useful bit that you can really gleam from that section is that this game is run via group consensus.

IC-wise, it'd be useful to read the past couple chapters but yeah, Chapter 5 is really the best one to get up to speed on things. We won't even go into anything before the Brotherhood of the Mud.

And why aren't Morlocks people, too? I'm sure they have evil wives and evil children waiting for them at home.

Gralhruk
10th of March, 2004, 02:17
The OOC is indeed quite meaningless to read, but if you are a glutton for punishment there is an amusing passage or two to be found.

The IC is by far more interesting, and I highly recommend reading as much as possible. It will definitely help you understand the style of the game. And it's Fellowship of Mud.

And sure, you can be haunted by a missing arm. When you are ready for the big leagues, though, kill someone who doesn't deserve it and you'll have months of good in game material.

Cadrius
10th of March, 2004, 02:20
The key really, is to kill people in your past and then kill some more undeserving folks whilst in game. That's how to do angst.

"Sir Cadrius the Angstadin." I like the sound of that.

Hmm...I don't know why, but compared to some of the other posts around here mine just feels kinda dry. But unless Nicos reveals he's a bard, I somehow doubt that Ben would really run into the group until this whole dinner thing gets going.

just 2 things FYI for everyone else who cares. 1) Ben is tryin' to figure out just what the hell that thing on his shield is, since it's previous owner was a dwarf. Ben hasn't the slightest at it's particular meaning, but he thinks it might have something to do with when the dwarfs first got started, but I don't think he'll find anything, unless Nicos knows something about it.

2) I was intending on the dinner being kinda somber, with the announcement that several of their members *caugh*Ben's group*cough* so whenever it is we get to the dinner that's what I think should happen.

That is, unless the lot of you don't think it would work...

itches

Well it's hard to capture the spirt of a chapter when we don't know what's going to happen. That's the advantage of naming a chapter after it is finished, you can accuratly fit a title. Naming it before the fact however, is much harder and you have to make it more bland and general.

How about "Secrets of the Brotherhood" ?

I've always found the concept of killing monsters and taking their stuff to be really amusing. Apparently evil beings have no right to own property.

Gralhruk
13th of March, 2004, 03:35
And it's perfectly acceptable for good beings to relieve them of any property they happen to acquire ;). I was involved in a heated alignment debate (aren't they all?) over this. I was postulating that the vast majority of adventurers ought to be neutral rather than good, since they were typically forced to make choices that just could not be considered "good".

itches
13th of March, 2004, 03:39
That depends. Could the taking of the items help out the greater good? If so it's still "good" just not of the imediate nature.

Gralhruk
13th of March, 2004, 03:43
Which means that the immediate nature is not good. The means does not justify the end for good people. That is, killing Bob to save Fred and Harry doesn't make killing Bob a good act. Killing him is still bad, it's just less bad than letting Fred and Harry die.

itches
13th of March, 2004, 03:47
No, it means there are more then one type of good. Yes killing Bob is a bad thing, which is what is meant to inspire hero's to be .. heroic. If there is no other choice beside chosing between Bob or Fred and Harry, it's both a good and a bad act. As well as being Tragic.

But this is why hero's are who they are, being good isn't the easist path to take, and the fact that people manage to stay on the strait and narrow while faced with the world is what makes them great.

Cadrius

What's best for all is not always what's good. See "Chaotic Good." In your example Bob would likely find the intention of killing him to be pretty damn not good. While Fred and Harry would likely find it acceptable.

The act of kiling Bob is bad, period. However the result of saving Fred and Harry is good. There's a difference.

Gralhruk
13th of March, 2004, 04:36
3e has clarified alignment somewhat, making things less difficult for good adventurers. In particular, they've basically stated that killing an evil creature is a good act. Where things get murky are in the interpretation of how tied to a particular alignment a given race is. For example, orcs are listed as chaotic evil. Does that mean every orc everywhere is evil? If so, then morally, slaying them isn't an issue for good folks. It becomes an issue when their alignment is due to environment or individual disposition - when some orcs might be neutral or even good.

Cadrius
13th of March, 2004, 04:41
3e shot itself in the foot when it defined "always" as "99% of the time." Always means always, not "basically all the time but here's an exception should your PCs want to do something different." This complicates the acceptability of killing evil creatures in Gral's example. 1% of a population not being evil is pretty big. If you wipe out a hundred orcs, statistically one of them wasn't such a bad guy.

They should have fixed so that always means always (and thus still subject to Rule 0), or changed it to usually.

itches
13th of March, 2004, 04:44
Assuming the 'good' characters don't arbitrarily decide to go out and slay all Orc's everywhere, if an Orc is neutral or good, it's actions wouldn’t be such as to have the character killing it.

Baring a horrible situation, which doesn't occur in a perfect world.

Gralhruk
13th of March, 2004, 04:49
Which brings me back to the "adventurer's are neutral" territory :).

They are basically good people, but are willing to live with the idea that the orc they kill in his sleep might not be a bad guy.

Cadrius
13th of March, 2004, 04:49
It's not uncommon to see the debate over at 3eBB (at least when I used to go there) regarding the morality of a paladin slaying an entire goblin warren, which would include women and children. Statistically you're going to be killing some that are not/would not be evil.

We hear it all the time, a good person falls in with "the wrong crowd." The same is true here. Maybe the good/neutral orc is a scout and doesn't do much killing. Maybe he only steals from settlements and leaves the maiming to his bloodthirsty comrades. There's plenty of reasons for a non-evil creature to be with evil ones, particularly if objecting would lead to them being killed.

itches
13th of March, 2004, 04:56
Do the characters know that the orc they are killing in their sleep, don't go and pillage the local villages?

If they have good reson to think that the orcs are evil, then if they unknowingly kill a good one, is that an evil act? Innocent's and bystanders die during war

This whole line of thinking leads to the only truly good characters are the one's who live in a cave, well away from any of these questions. However that then leads onto the question of them really being good if they can sit there knowing there is evil in the world.

So yeah ... neutral.

Cadrius
13th of March, 2004, 05:00
That's exactly the point, they don't know. Even in a fantasy game, death is a very brutal and usually a very permanent action. It shouldn't be treated lightly.

As far as neutral, well, that's debatable. 3e defines neutral people as those that will do what's necessary to protect their loved ones, but won't risk their necks for those they don't know. Okay, that follows. So how do we define PCs who go in and slaughter orcs, knowing they could be killing non-evil ones, who have been raiding and killing local villagers?

The intent is good. They're helping out people they don't know for little or no gain.

The action is neutral. Yeah, they're waxing bad guys but there's probably a few that aren't that bad. Thus it's a muddy area.

What could they do instead? Find a non-violent way of driving off the orcs, either via diplomacy, single-combat, or other scare tactics. It ruins some of the heroism of fantasy games, I know, but if you really want to get into morality you're going to have to be faced with the fact that fighting is a last-resort sort of deal.

Gralhruk

This whole line of thinking leads to the only truly good characters are the one's who live in a cave, well away from any of these questions. However that then leads onto the question of them really being good if they can sit there knowing there is evil in the world.
Exactly. As written, alignment falls apart under when put under scrutiny. The thing to do is not over analyze it, but rather to have the DM make some rulings before you start playing. For example, killing good orcs is okay provided you believe there is a good chance they are evil; killing orc women and children is evil unless they are directly attacking you.

Gralhruk
13th of March, 2004, 05:05
As far as neutral, well, that's debatable. 3e defines neutral people as those that will do what's necessary to protect their loved ones, but won't risk their necks for those they don't know.
That's always been the way I define chaotic good :). To me neutral (as regards good and evil) means you generally want to help people, but you aren't above helping yourself first if push comes to shove. You have respect for life, but you respect your own life more than an orcs - especially since he is probably evil and will probably kill you if he wakes up.

itches
13th of March, 2004, 05:08
Take intent, action, outcome, mix it all together and see what you have.

If you indend to save the local villages by getting rid of the orcs = good.

The killing of the most likly evil orcs is muddy so = Nuetral

Say it results in the village being saved = good.
OR having the Orc tribes relitives avange the death by raising the village to the ground = bad.

Too many actions which are meant to be good, done in a questionable manner, and which have a bad or questionable result would end up effecting an alignment change upon your character.

itches
13th of March, 2004, 05:10
The basic definition for them all that I always worked with was

Good = Helping others.
Nuetral = helping yourself without harming others.
Evil = Helping yourself by harming others.

Gralhruk
13th of March, 2004, 05:11
And in case anyone was wondering, I was rather hoping that my humorous thread title would prompt people to voice their opinion on what we should really call it.

Cadrius
13th of March, 2004, 05:13
I disagree. I think both neutral and evil people will help others, but only those that they care about. Arguing that an orc, beholder, dragon, or otherwise is incapable of love is ludicrous. The difference between neutral and evil people is that the evil ones will occasionally screw over those around them, while neutrals tend to have more objections to such things.

"itches bitches" works pretty well, actually.

Gralhruk
13th of March, 2004, 05:17
Good = Helping others.
Nuetral = helping yourself without harming others.
Evil = Helping yourself by harming others.
Which is more or less the way I see it. The thing is, there are relative positions within each category. A really good person might help others even if it means giving his own life; a mildly good person might help others if it involves hard work. It is difficult to distinguish between people at the bottom end of good and people at the top end of neutral. Not only that, but I think there is a degree of lateral movement within each category as well. For example, a "left wing" good person might be willing to sacrifice his life for an individual, because they believe in the sanctity of life; a "right wing" good person might be willing to sacrifice his life for a good cause.

Gralhruk
13th of March, 2004, 05:20
The difference between neutral and evil people is that the evil ones will occasionally screw over those around them, while neutrals tend to have more objections to such things.
It's all in your definition of "screw over". Evil people won't be bothered if folks are injured, maimed, or killed - maybe they won't want people close to them to be injured, maimed, or killed, but they have no compunction over most others getting the axe. Neutral folks, on the other hand, generally won't want to see harm come to others because of their action but if it happens they'll be sad about it and move on.

Cadrius
13th of March, 2004, 05:34
By those around them, I meant those close to their twisted, black hearts. In general nobody wants those that they care about to have harm come to them. Where the alignments begin to differentiate is what people are willing to do to/for strangers. Good people tend to help or die. Neutral people tend to avoid specifically harming them. Evil people generally don't give a crap. I think that's a safe generalization.

But would neutral people be sad about it? I'm not sure. Look at our own culture. "A man was killed in a tragic baking accident today." Do you feel sad for him? For his family? For those who knew him, even if you did not? I do, anyway, but that might be another issue altogether. I think about that sometimes which is why I believe that people are inherently neutral. We care about those that we know and love. Sure we claim to care about everyone, but at the end of the day it's about who's in your life. Would the average person care about a man being killed by pastries? It's an absurdist death, to be sure, but one all the same. Parallels could be drawn to real life, but I'll avoid those examples in the spirit of good taste.

Bah, fuck it. We play in this fantasy world for a reason. To hell with reality. I wanna kill things.
