If our esteemed itchy one isn't up to it, I'll get something up next moving us forward with Gregor and the fallout of an obviously horrible murder.

There, not that it really moved us forward. The omission of Sarra was deliberate by Nicos.

I have no idea what to post so I'm just going to have Nicos fight with Shade. It also helps that Shade is wrong.

I have been negligent with the end of summer. This shall be remedied in the nearish future.
Gralhruk

No longer content to hold the game's progress hostage, I have updated things accordingly. We can skip the funeral, if you'd like, and I can reference it in memory.
Gralhruk
22nd of October, 2010, 05:25
Yeah, I think skipping the funeral is best. So, the question now becomes: what next? It is probably a good idea to set a scene that puts us all together again. Maybe the characters can have a secret discussion about what this means for them and how they are going to proceed.
Cadrius
25th of October, 2010, 07:50
Agreed. I'll start working on something to move us forward.
itches
25th of October, 2010, 08:17
Are we moving all the way up to our destination, or having more road adventures? Because there is something I want Nicos to do before we part ways with the caravan (it's fine if it happens offscreen)
Gralhruk
25th of October, 2010, 23:38
I think we're on the road for a while longer.
Cadrius
26th of October, 2010, 16:35
My loose plan was to play with this thread of being hunted. By all means, itches, do your thang.
itches
26th of October, 2010, 16:48
Well, it would require us to leave the caravan.
Basically Nicos' antics has been treated more as amusing than serious, ignoring the seedier and selfish side of it. That needs to be fixed. So he sleeps with one of the guard's wives and then slips off the night before they arrive in the city of their destination - planning to meet up later but without telling you. He justifies it as having nothing to do with you, but basically he is causing a mess and not staying around to deal with it. Worse, he's leaving you guys in the middle of things.
But yeah, that can wait until after we get hunted for a while.

We got hit but not as bad as they did further East. It's hard to tell how much snow we got because the wind was just crazy - there are a lot of areas where there is no snow at all because of the wind, and then other areas with like 3 foot drifts. My driveway, of course, had lots of drifts.

29th of March, 2011, 11:02
Well, I suspect the solution will lay somewhere in the realm of stabbing. Perhaps falling back as a group. Or at the very least waking the rest of us up.
Black Plauge
29th of March, 2011, 11:32
No. No stabbing for Blarth. He prefers blunt force trauma or enemies he can sink his teeth into. And given that these enemies are rotting on their feet...
Also, I wasn't referring so much to the narrative as the logistics.
itches
29th of March, 2011, 12:49
Gather everyone around one of the wagons with the non-combatants we care about in the middle. Or around one of the fires, fire tends to be comforting when facing zombies. Then we wait for them to come to us.
Nicos also has a bunch of cure spells that he can use 4 times to nuke any that come into touching range. Not that if we're facing about 40, taking down 4 will be much help.
OOC logistics, post as we go with each of us handling our own small segment of the battle, unless Cadrius really wants to take run each of the zombies.

Gralhruk

So, Gral, do you want to kick things off or should I?
I can come up with something. I think itches suggestion is sound - gather around the fire with the noncombatants in the middle.
Now might be a good time to decide just what it is we're up against here. If it's 20 Skathros' then we're dead. So, what does a stat block for our typical zombie look like? I'm kind of thinking we use the standard zombie template from the MM, but modify it with some cool, unexpected twist. Or maybe have one or two more powerful zombies among them (higher level base characters with a zombie template).
Black Plauge
30th of March, 2011, 03:18
20 or so zombies sound about right. I would even go so far as to just use the stat blocks for some of the sample zombies (human commoner, troglodyte, and bugbear look about right) and just flavor them as humans. I don't think we need anything more powerful than that given the numbers.

Psionics doesn't work very well against mindless creatures, unfortunately. And do you know, that is just about the only kind of creature we have fought since I joined the group! First it was wraiths, or something like that; then giant ants (they had that whole hive-mind thing); then Skathros; now zombies.
By the way, what motivates zombies in general and these zombies in particular? Do they really want to eat brains or is that just in the movies? I guess I'm just wondering what they do when they kill somebody - do they stop right then and there and try to get at the corpse's brain, or do they keep moving on to the next victim?
Cadrius
18th of April, 2011, 07:26
I fashioned these "zombies" to be a little bit different from the moaning, shambling, brain-eating variety as featured in this subchapter here (http://online-roleplaying.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9910) (which I now hope is consistent with what I've portrayed in our latest chapter).
Rather than devour, they propagate their kind through the black "blood" that pours out of their eyes (as well as their mouths). Consider it an alternate, less grisly means of spreading the virus/plague/curse. They also move with the same fluidity as they had in life, but they don't move with sudden bursts of speed. Think of them as waves rolling to shore, constant and unyielding.
I promise the next chapter will feature targets of a more living, breathing nature (well, more of them anyway).

I have fudged the rules a few times myself. (Precognition doesn't really work at all the way I've been playing it, for instance.) Ah this is a big day for Juni. You always remember the first time you kill a zombie.
I remember my first time. I was walking alone through the pre-dawn alleys of the city after a night spent drinking, when out of nowhere a figure suddenly loomed at me. It may have been a man once, but no more. Dishevelled beyond any human capacity and bearing a stench that no mere mortal could endure, it thrust it's blackened claws at me, mumbling incoherent, incomprehensible phrases. The nonsense sounds of "Spare change?" echoed through my mind and I knew fear.
It is only in the darkest, most desperate moments when you can know what someone is capable of. As this undead horror came at me I reached deep inside and found the courage to act. Snatching up a piece of metal from the roadside, I swung it at the monster with all of my might. It connected with its head and it staggered back, but I held my resolve. I swung again and again, until at last the creature fell to the ground and I fled through the night to the safety of light and civilisation.
True story.

Updated and giving y'all some space to work with if you so desire. The long and the short of this is that, barring a delightful plot twist, the line is going to eventually be overrun through sheer numbers. I have contingencies for both possibilities so don't feel constrained to toe the proverbial line.

Nicely done. I'll work on a zombie slicing post forthwith.

Thank you kind sir ;).
Oh, and by the way, I finally started reading American Gods. Awesome recommendation - I'm loving it so far.

The good thing about my posting style, is that when RL takes me out for a week, no one notices.

Juni is shooting at a clump of zombies that may or may not be attacking Blarth, depending on how BP wants to play it. The zombies should be fairly easy targets for her since she's using Precog, and they don't have any AC to speak of, right? Except she'd have to get them right in the head, I guess. Darn. I really do dislike mindless undead.

My favorite American Gods quote thus far:
"Hey," said Shadow. "Huginn or Muninn, or whoever you are."
The bird turned, head tipped, suspiciously, on one side, and it stared at him with bright eyes.
"Say 'Nevermore,'" said Shadow.
"Fuck you," said the raven.

I like some of Neil Gaiman that I've ready. Anansi Boys was good and most of the Graveyard Book. But when I tried to read American Gods, something about it turned me off. I don't remember what it was but I never read past the first chapter or so.

So... Are we going to finish this fight more or less round by round? I have to admit that I don't think I have anything interesting left to say about fighting zombies. In other words, I'd be happy enough to jump ahead to the end if someone wants to do a final summary post.

I've got ideas for two more posts for the fight for Blarth, but I suppose that I could combine them into one if no one else wants to stay with the fight.
Right now I was waiting on Cadrius, since we seem to be posting in a round robin fashion, though not really round-by-round in my view. However, I'm again open to jumping in if that's not working out for everyone.

Well I'm here too. And I agree with you that we don't necessarily have to wait for Cadrius to continue with the combat. But since I posted last, and don't really have anything else worthwhile to post (at least, not at this time), then I don't think my opinion counts for much.
But I like to chime in whenever I can. :)

There. As I see it, Blarth's turned the corner in this fight. With the axe he's no longer dealing with the zombie's DR and that moment of panic would have upped his AC by 5 or 6 points, making him close to unhittable for the low-level zombies that make up the bulk of this horde. For him, it's simply a matter of time now until he runs out of enemies.
However, I've no good dramatic way of finishing the combat, so if any of you have that up your sleeve then go right ahead.

In the recognition of being shortly overwhelmed, Cadrius is trying to initiate a strategic "retreat" (read: get the f out of Dodge) by getting the bruisers (Shade, Blarth) to cut a hole in the line for people to flee from.

Cadrius
21st of September, 2011, 11:47
My preference is to move us forward. If others have elements they'd like to incorporate into this time period (traveling to the duchies) then by all means, I'll only end this particular piece of it.
Edit: I proposed this because I was getting a general malaise toward the current setup and figured moving things on would be better.

Nothing really, still seems short.

Depending on how far you're pushing it, Nicos sleeping with one of the wife of one of the guards then bailing of the caravan (and the drama) just before arriving at the city. He'd track down the group again when they are all there.
I'm not sure it needs to be roleplayed.

There, I've written an end to the encounter and opened the door for several possibilities. If Cad comes back, we can pick up this storyline and continue with it, but we could also take up and run with some of the ideas rolling around in the Inner Sanctum.
