No need to apologize, I understand that everybody has a real life :). It's just that all of my PBP games have been moving really slowly lately. I'm in four games over on the 3ebb and all four of my DM's (well, all three of them - 2 games are run by Second Talon) are spending much of their time playing Neverwinter Nights.

I will freely admit that I'm feeling a bit of summer lethargy when it comes to posting. The air is so warm, the water so cool, and the girls so beautiful that I have difficulties persuading myself to post. Fortunately I also work so I have free time then.
Plus after that one I definitely needed to mull it over and I'm still not entirely done yet.
So allow me to apologize in advance. If you don't hear from me for a few days it's likely due to me going off to the beach, chasing girls, or the various other things us college guys do.
But rest assured I will post shortly.

The plot thickens. Cadrius guessed wrong, it wasn't Skerf that cut her - as it happens I didn't even know he existed until I started writing that post. It was Ricard, her one time lover and partner in crime. Alas, the full story will need to wait for a more appropriate moment http://www.uniquehardware.co.uk/server-smilies/otn/tongue/crazy3.gif.
At any rate, what does the current battlefield look like? I assume that we are arranged as follows:

I thought i would just take this opertunity to express how much i enjoy this game. I really think that playing here, has honed my writing skills to where i want them to be. You may notice, but a lot of Itches's posts i try to work on the Verbel side of it. Always a week point in my writing, i think i am starting to show some imporvemt. either that or the 4 shots of whisky has mucked my vision up. Probobly both.

Itches: I thought your last post was excellent.
To make the combat a little more organized, I took the liberty of rolling initiative (okay, it's computer generated using Irony's dice server). Taking into account the initiative modifiers on your character sheets, here is the order:
26 - Maeko
19 - Cadrius
18 - Shade, Gnoll 1
17 - Gnoll 2
13 - Itches
10 - Gnoll 3
7 - Gnoll 4
Of course, feel free to ignore me if you'd rather just post at will.
Cadrius
25th of July, 2002, 04:26
Judging by how fast Maeko is moving she's likely risking breaking the speed of sound and we'll ALL be killed by the ensuing sonic boom.
Then again the big lug in armor is moving on a 19, what's up with that?
Gralhruk
25th of July, 2002, 04:41
Maeko rolled a 20, Cadrius a 15 (he does have improved initiative). Incidentally, the gnolls all have +0 init. I suppose I ought to start carrying a D20 around with me: computer generated random numbers aren't always terribly random. As I said, feel free to ignore it if you want to post.
I have a thing about getting a good initiative roll; almost all of my characters will take improved initiative at some point, almost all of them have a decent dexterity. It's really annoying when the tank beats my lightning fast rogue.

All right!!!
The two Gnolls that will try and kill poor little Itches get to go before him. I'm so dead.
Save my, and thereby save yourselves. For you see I am in fact the god of toenails. Yes that’s right toenails.
Speaking of toenails I just noticed that there is virtually no magic in this game. I personally think that allows for the best role-playing. Still we have not 1 magical weapon. Personally if we did at sure point introduce magical items - I’m assuming we will eventually, it would really allows us to make each item special, with its own story and such. But I’m rambling here so I’m off to do a spell check.

Cadrius, you said you were attacking the first two gnolls, but also said that Maeko didn't look like she needed any help. That sounds like you are having Cadrius attack G3 & G4; let me know if I misread you. Also, I should think that both G3 & G4 were within 20' of him, so he should have had time to make a single attack on one of them.
From Maeko's description, I'd say she readied an action to attack G1 or G2 so I think Maeko should describe G1's move since he goes after Shade in the initiative count.
Anyway, I'm off to post.
Cadrius
30th of July, 2002, 05:31
Yep you read me right, but it's a move-equivalent action to draw your sword, plus the 20' move over there. If only he was hasted...
Gralhruk
30th of July, 2002, 05:41
Ah, well lucky for you their is a little known rule about drawing a weapon: so long as you have a BAB of +1 or better you can draw your weapon while you move. So you do get an attack :)
Cadrius
30th of July, 2002, 05:44
Are you serious? I've never heard of that one. Wow. I'll get on that and do me a favor and get me the page number on that one if you remember it.
Gralhruk
30th of July, 2002, 05:48
I don't have the page number but I assume it is under the combat section, where they describe the "Draw a Weapon" move equivilent action. Here is a quote from the SRD:
Draw a weapon [Move Equivalent][AoO: No]
Description: If a combatant has a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, a combatant can combine one of these actions with a regular move. If a combatant has the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, a combatant can draw two light or one-handed weapons in the time it would normally take a combatant to draw one.

Gralhruk

I think Shade has 24 or so after your gnoll slashed her. I updated her stats in the 'Cast' thread so you can check it there if you like.
So, who's next: Cadrius or Maeko? I think Maeko drops back in the initiative order because of that readied action but I'm not sure.
Also, does it bug anybody else that they can't see when Cadrius is on-line? I'm reduced to checking for his handle over at the 3ebb :).
Cadrius

Gralhruk

I haven't DMed 3e so I don't know much about calculating CR's. Anybody have a clue what an appropriate challenge would be for our group?
On a side note, I'm impressed that Itches managed to free himself and launch a coherent attack without harming himself or his allies. Of course, he didn't harm the enemies either but a hero has to start somewhere :).
Looking at your initiative order, I see that our three combat veterans get to act before the remaining gnoll. I'm going to take a wild guess and say he isn't going to live long enough to attack.
As for being poor, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Once we get to town, Shade can probably find some stuff that isn't nailed down. Won't that thrill our ex-paladin?

Even the longest journey begins with a single step . . .
Or, to put it more bluntly:
You suck now but maybe someday, with hard work and practice, you'll be gutting gnolls like your bloodthirsty companions. Although I'm not entirely sure if that is behavior you should be aspiring to.
itches
1st of August, 2002, 04:10
Yes that was something i tryed (badly) to get across before. The main battle itches will face while out here, will be to not turn into a bloodthirsty killer. It is the innocent itches that Lily is in love with, and she is the reason he is out here. It would defeat the purpose if, in order to survive, he turns into someone that she cant love.
Or at least i think

I'm noticing a pattern here in our fights.
Maeko throws herself into combat against multiple opponents, and manages to do quite good for herself.
Itches, does something totally useless, and manages to survive unscathed.
The Cadirus and Shade team set about systematically eliminating the enemies, one person at a time.
Gralhruk
1st of August, 2002, 06:45
You neglected to mention that Cadrius seems to take the brunt of the damage. Of course, in a non-flanking situation where our enemies actually get in a few attacks I think Shade will start absorbing her fair share.
Maeko is a little dynamo - around 5'1", 100 pounds and a 15 strength. Butt kicking for goodness!

Gralhruk

Hopefully it will be sooner than a couple of days :).
So, just out of curiousity where did your character concepts come from?
I had wanted to play a Shadowdancer ever since I read the description in the DMG, so I always had that idea in the back of my head. Then one day I heard "Rhiannon" by Fleetwood Mac on the radio and the line "She is like a cat in the dark and then she is the darkness" just set a light bulb off in my head.
I asked myself who "she" was, and Shade was born.
Maeko
2nd of August, 2002, 03:00
Interesting!
Well, I started from the name, Maeko is a Shugenja I'm playing in 'Oriental Adventures', the game that got me here, I wanted a character to fit the Japanese name.
Add that I'm a sinologist with a fondness for martial arts and I have been wanting to try out the monk for a long time....
As for her attitude it comes part from 'Kung fu' (the old TV series with David Carradine? I don't know if the original title was that)
and part from 'The Initiate Brother' trilogy by Sean Russel, a very good, very realistic Asian fantasy in my opinion.
Gralhruk
2nd of August, 2002, 03:07
Cool. Names are normally very important to me when I create characters, and sometimes I start there too. I think the right name really gives them more depth.
And yes, the title was 'Kung Fu'. The 'Oriental Adventures' game you are speaking of, that isn't Cadogan's Lands of Dyanasty is it? You must enjoy that game since he's attempting to make it historical. I'm looking forward to our characters meeting one another.
Maeko
2nd of August, 2002, 03:12
In 'Lands of Dinasty' I'm Xiao Hu (little, or young, fox) and yes, I'm enjoing it a lot, although I hope we get to meet each other soon...
Sorry, the one with the shugenja is Oriental Realms, not Oriental Adventures, it is DMed by Walter Willis (it's the last game on the index board).
Gralhruk
2nd of August, 2002, 06:22
And where did Itches come from?
itches
2nd of August, 2002, 06:54
The name? That is from the 3rd Ed Board. The idea was that I would be Itches: Annoying As.
The character, well that is really a funny story. It is basically me. Only this guy is a better fighter.
Well that is only partially true. I was reading through the back-story in this game, and somewhere in there I starting coming up with the idea of this simple, and innocent fool. Who would yet remain non the less likeable. The idea was for over time, him to loose his innocence, and become hardened. Before this, it would be a good way to see what someone without guile makes of the D&D world.
The half-elf is because I gave him 2 feats, realised as a human he would need another one, so he became the hybrid he is today.
The rest is just me. :fun:
Cadrius
2nd of August, 2002, 11:11
Cadrius came from...well...I'm not entirely certain. I was reading through the first couple of pages of the role posting thread when I realized I wanted to join. Well there were already a couple of goofball characters (Mega's and Cadogan's) and I wanted a serious one, somebody to bring balance to the mood.
I've never played a fallen paladin before and I suddenly had a concept of a man who consciously seeks the appropriate death but subconsciously seeks redemption for what he's done. At the time I wasn't aware I would create some sort of melodrama involving him slaying his brother and his beloved.
And while it is a good call that I tend to disappear on weekends (especially with my 21st birthday being Saturday), I'll be around to post tonight and tomorrow morning.
Cadrius
2nd of August, 2002, 11:43
Oh and if anyone gets frustrated with my writing style as of late, I apologize. I've been going back and forth between what sort of third person present style of writing I'm interested in. I like the Cadrius-specific omniscient one, but sometimes I break away from that and go a little more broad. Ah well, I'll settle into something eventually.
Oops, he told a lie, guess he won't be getting back into the ranks any time soon.

For those of you that read THIS thread first in your daily routine, I've officially joined this particular game. Forgive the artistic license in adding one more enemy, then systematically exterminating it. :paranoid:
And no, my character did NOT come in with a "Hi guys! I'm ! You can trust me, I'm a PC!" For that matter, he hasn't said [I]anything yet.
Yes, I know what I'm doing. ;)
If you really need to know, I can post a stat-block for him. He's a smidge over the 'starting gold' rule (I didn't get the right interpretation of it until I scanned this; why couldn't you have just said 450 gp?), but not with anything drastic or game-breaking.

There is a 'Cast' thread. To see it you just have to choose the 'show thread from the beginning' option. All of our characters are posted there (it's useful, especially in combat, to have a full character sheet available).

Age wise well ... lets not talk about that. You do out rank me in playing experience, and I have discovered the first year of my D&D life, we didn’t exactly play normally. Way too much Meta gaming (mostly by yours truly). It was probably due to the fact that the whole bunch of us, starting playing at the same time, the DM included.

Hey, Shade isn't really an assassin; that's just the way Cadrius decided to label her. She killed the dwarf to avenge a friend and the folks that witnessed the act made a few assumptions. I think her alignment is listed as CG, although she may be more CN with good tendencies.

Well, he's not here now.
You know? this is the campaign I enjoy most, pure role-playing. :)
No power-players, no magic-item-pumped-up characters...
Yes, I suppose hack and slash isn't my cup of tea.
Gralhruk
3rd of August, 2002, 03:00
I'll probably just wait, I've got a few things in mind but the situation might change.
The pure RP thing is definitely fun. My other PBP's are all good RP games as well; I think PBP lends itself much better to creating well-rounded characters.

I would like to add my voice in agreement. This is the main roleplaying game i'm in. So far Itches hasnt exactly been in combat. there is no way he would ever be a hack and slash character, which is why he has the Class he does.
Oh and on the side note, Itches doesnt have any angst. What you see is what you get. which is the buety behind him. Sometimes it is tempting to just have him make a normal attack, to not make a fool of himself. But that doesnt fit in the character concept, so it isnt exactly idiot. Fool is more the term.

Don't worry, Cadrius; I'll post a better description soon -- I was just providing first-glance-at-a-distance detail.

I can't imagine us actually getting into a fight. He hasn't done anything at all to provoke us. I'd say Itches and Cadrius aren't about to start one, Maeko seems to be above it, and Shade is more annoyed by Cadrius' behavior than Paladin's.

It MIGHT happen. I'm not wearing a "PC" sign, am I? If the others reason that my character's a threat, or decide to ignore him, that's what happens.
Of course, if the former happens -- say, Shade deciding to lash out -- we'll see what transpires, won't we?
P. S. Hey look! I'm animated now!

Lone Paladin, feel free to post IC with anything you'd like - even if it's just reactions or whatever, it will give the rest of us something to play off of. Also, if Shade lashes out chances are it will be with her tongue rather than her sword, so you've little to worry about there ;). She's not much for one on one combat, and certainly too concerned about her own hide to meet Paladin in a fair fight.

Gralhruk
7th of August, 2002, 02:18
Shade doesn't really think he's an idiot. In fact, she is a little jealous of his happiness and his devotion to his true love. She wants to think he's an idiot because it makes her feel better about herself.
Cadrius
7th of August, 2002, 02:50
Man I love days like this. Seven in character posts thus far. Keep 'em coming!
Oh and "idiot" isn't quite the right word for how Cadrius feels about Itches. It's one of those things where he knows he's a fool, but he's also a lovestruck fool so there's simultaneously sympathy and pity present in his feelings for the nobleman. So while he might roll his eyes at the man's antics, woe to the fool who attempts to rough up Itches in a tavern while Cadrius is around. But that's enough of that...

Cadrius, it's funny that you posted the rage returning and making a man out of him. I was sooooo tempted to have Shade try to bring Cadrius out of his depression by sneering out "I like you better when you're mad.", but she figured it would just make him worse. I was saving it for the future, but now it doesn't seem quite as original.
Cadrius
7th of August, 2002, 03:50

Actually, half the problem is Mega's 'board name = character name' rule. I know it was designed to make it easier to keep track of all the characters (since you never know how many people will be posting here), but it does make for some odd character names.
As I mentioned way back when, Gralhruk is not exactly the best name for a human female.

Quick update? Oh no you dont, you have to go and read all the posts you missed out on.
Pah , quick update.
Cadrius
8th of August, 2002, 03:16
Er...quick update? Um...
Let's see. Cadrius, Shade, and WhoNAN flee the scene of an assassination done by Shade on Gralhruk. Enter crazy extra-dimensional home of WhoNAN's family. Shade and Cadrius say "Screw this" and leave. Get lost in creepy ass forest. Shade flips out almost stabs Cadrius in the face, Cadrius later flips out. Itches and Maeko meet in a non-creepy section of the woods. Itches falls in quicksand. Cadrius hauls his sorry aristocratic behind out. The four start marching along a game trail. Camp within the protective embrace of a tree (whose branches look creepy to Shade). Attacked by gnolls, Cadrius is wounded. Next morning, attacked by more gnolls, Cadrius is even more wounded. Meet Paladin, and the rest is recent history.
Oh and there's a bit of a romance subplot going on in there. Not to mention a subconscious search for redemption, Itches seeking to be reunited with his love, Maeko looking for an artifact, and Shade...er...well looking for something.
Man, it really shouldn't have been that easy to sum up the game in that short of space. What has all my typing been for?!
I would however strongly encourage you at least skim some of what we've done. There's some powerful stuff in there.

Me too! Where is everybody?
By the way, taking inspiration from Itches, any thoughts about our 'small, bald woman'?
Cadrius
9th of August, 2002, 02:19
Cadrius finds her a bit enigmatic, not to mention a touch bit strange (come on it's a bald woman who fights with her hands, how often do you suppose he's seen that?)
I personally find her to be really interesting. Her different ways of acting and thinking add a nice flavor to the mix.
Plus I think it's pretty amusing that she's almost as strong as Cadrius but is over a foot shorter and likely at 90 pounds lighter.
Maeko
9th of August, 2002, 02:23
Well, you see, as pen-and-paper DM I sort of grew tired of red haired, green eyed babes and strapping, blond 6 footers...

9th of August, 2002, 02:25
YaY I inspired someone.
Sorry about the slight lack of posting, I’ll try and get some in here, but don’t expect anything too major. I have to make a big post in Battle Royal - everyone just died.
As to Baldy, she seems to be the most normal person of the group. Itches for some reason has totally accepted her as a member. (No offense Paladin, but he doesn’t see you as a member -yet) Unike Cadirus -whom he views as the leader, and is full of admiration for- and Shade -Itches is just plain scared of her- you managed to slip into the somewhat vague area of "friend". Nothing you do seems to surprise him (I’m putting it down to stupidity) hmm. Should do something more.
EDIT: okay i gave it ago, i went there, and i was about to start typing - when i descovered i had nothing. Nothing to type, nothing for itches to do. Seems he is going to stay in the quiet state of awe fot a bit longer now
Gralhruk
9th of August, 2002, 03:20
Shade really likes Maeko, especially because she seems so independant and centered. Shade has always lacked focus; she doesn't examine her own behavior deeply enough to avoid the pitfalls she keeps falling into. On some level, she can feel Maeko's 'sense of self' and subconsciously hopes to emulate it.
And I know what you mean about avoiding the 'teenage male gamer fantasy chick'. When I created Shade, I thought I'd stay away from the bisexual, well-endowed, sexpot that seems to abound. That has, of course, made it rather difficult to find a character portrait for her. I suppose I'll have to get around to making my own one of these days.
Cadrius
9th of August, 2002, 03:25
I saw a picture of Shar in the Faiths and Pantheons book. It reminded me of Shade. Dark hair, somewhat hidden face, two blades. Not quite right, but interesting nonetheless.
And as a strapping, blond six footer I resent that Maeko! Ah, call it a flaw but my human and elven characters always seem to be close to my actual height, Cadrius here is an inch shorter than me.
Well we've done Maeko and Itches. Onto Cadrius. What do you all think of him?
Edit: I had to chuckle when I looked to see who was online, just the four of us.

So, a small and mostly useless post but I don't want to do much until I hear what the rest of the folks are about. As a side note, I didn't make the ant thing up; I actually observed that in my back yard several years ago.
At any rate, on to Cadrius. What can I say? Shade is puzzled by him, but at the same time reads him like a book. She is both exasperated and touched by his behavior. She wants his accpetance but at the same time refuses to acknowledge any acceptance he gives her. She wants him to like her but is scared to death that he actually might like her.
34 years and this is all I've learned about women.
From As Good as it Gets
"How do you write women so well?"
"It's easy. I just think of a man, and then take away reason and accountability."

Maeko
9th of August, 2002, 04:33
Cadrius? Maeko likes him, she respects him as a leader and 'feels' he is a good man, she also knows there is a lot he is not saying and something rather serious is gnawing at him, she would like to help him, but is afraid to take a wrong step and make thing worse.
No offence intended on six-footers ;), is the 'everybody is a magazine-model' attitude thar rubs me the wrong way, to me charisma is much more a personality factor than a physical beauty related one.
Gralhruk, my compliments on Shade.
In fact it may have backfired a little, since when I think of you I have to remind myself you aren't actually a woman...
Gralhruk
9th of August, 2002, 06:41
I'm 5'8", 150 lbs, brown hair, brown eyes. No magazine model but I'm real. And definitely all male :). I'm also the tallest person in my immediate family, and all throughout my school years I was the third shortest person in my class. Edit: third shortest male, that is.
Oddly enough (or not) most of my characters are short as well.
Cadrius
9th of August, 2002, 06:49
Interesting, one of my roommate's brothers is the tallest one in his family. He stands at 5'3". As you might imagine it's quite a bit of fun going over to see their family when you stand at least a foot taller than everyone else.
I can defintely understand how the archtypical fantasy characters can get boring. Man they get old fast, although I will admit preferring my PCs to be attractive, but that's likely due to my own vanity.
Gralhruk

So the strangest thing just happened. I was reading Gral's latest post while there's some music playing on my stereo. I don't know who put in the cd, but this fiddle, guitar, and drum trio comes on (possibly a flute in there, hard to say). Suffice to say, it blended perfectly with the post. The tempo and tone swelled in the appropriate places and slowed in others. Seriously, it left me with goosebumps.
I think I'm going to start posting while listening to mood appropriate music.

BTW folks, how do XP work, in free form?
itches
13th of August, 2002, 02:10
XP is a matter of descretion in free form. Just like dice rolls, you dont actualy have to do it, i mean i haven't rolled a set of dice once yet in this game.
still if you want to work out what your characters actual XP gain would be, that is also possible.
Mostly though i would imagine it would be up to everyone, if they all feel that it is time to level up then its free form.
Also i think this subject was breached before, if your brave enough you can wander around the past posts and find it
itches
13th of August, 2002, 02:34
Had he more time to ponder it he might have also considered why it was they always traveled in fours
Just wondering if you actually have an idea for this, I always had 4 of them there, because there was 4 of us.
Also want to know if we are going to just skip ahead to where we camp?
Maeko
13th of August, 2002, 02:37
It may be the number four has some simbolic value linked to combat in Gnoll culture; for the Chinese for instance it's linked to 'death'.
What more, if Gnolls are bipedal Hyenas or wolves, they should have four fingers
Gralhruk
13th of August, 2002, 05:08
As far as XP, I haven't DMed 3e at all so I have no idea what is appropriate. Back when I played 1e we stopped keeping track of xp altogether and simply leveled up when it felt right (usually every 3 adventures or so).
Oh, Cadrius, you definitely mentioned the necklace before. I think at least twice. Shade is definitely aware of it from our little interlude by the stream.
Also, I've included the 'Riddle of the Four' in my latest post. I think it has something to do with Maeko :).

As far as the gnolls moving in fours, well, I think there's something more to it, some sort of cultural thing but it hasn't come together yet. Feel free to play with it.
Gralhruk

Hrrrm. Maybe she would have, maybe not; no need to apologize though: it's all good. Can't have all of us running off on our own.
Cadrius
13th of August, 2002, 23:43
Eh, I say we give the 3rd edition experience chart the finger and just do whatever we like. While we haven't done much combat-wise (which seems to be the real way to gain experience in 3rd ed) our roleplaying and plot development has been astounding. I personally think we should level up at some point in the near future, that or acquire some more wealth here. Cadrius has had about ten gold and basic equipment throughout the whole game.
Ack, I wasn't sure if Shade would return or not. I'll try not to take just a big assumption in the future.
Gralhruk
13th of August, 2002, 23:48
Nah, like I said, don't worry about it. I hadn't really made up my mind what she was going to do; I toyed with the idea of having her bump into Cadrius as they both escaped from the group. Since he went and got himself captured, clearly that wasn't going to happen anyway.
I prefer that everybody feel free to make whatever assumptions they want. It keeps the story interesting and it keeps me on my toes.

I just realized how awful poor Cadrius probably looks about now. He's taken quite a beating over the past day.

I suppose we get to see what Shade thinks of Itches singing skill. I haven't yet decided what she's going to say but I would like to make a small disclaimer: I personally thought the song was very well done, regardless of what she might say. :nervous:
You'll have to wait a bit for my reply. Sorry, but somethings come up here that I've got to take care of. Hopefully I can get back to this in a couple of hours.

I really liked the song as well even if I had difficulties creating a melody in my head that would work with it. I'd blame that on me though.
Incidentally, do you do much posting after the thirty hour mark? I find my writing gets increasingly incoherent as I get further and further past 24 hours without sleep.
Maeko
14th of August, 2002, 05:10
Thank you, Gralhruk! :)
Kappa are small, obnoxious turtle-like humanoids who according to Japanese myth live in bodies of water, they are viciously mischevious and often truly dangerous (think small water troll).
Compliments on your song-writing skill, Itches, really! :)

Thanx for the praise, people. My first song.
As to my posting, I do post after the 30 hour mark, but not as much as before, simply because I am up for more hours before hand. AS to the incoherent problem, it isn’t much of an issue until after the 30-hour mark. I can still hold it together though, it the 36-hour mark which is the big one. I do like posting and writing after the 30-hour mark, as while I am more incoherent I am also more creative. And you can still proof read things (I love spell check)
And if you can't find a melody that fits, dont worry either can I
:sleep:sleep:sleep:
Edit: I did it, i stayed on to see the post!! YaY. Now i thik going to go sleep. If i dont turn up for a few weeks i'm asleep

Okay a few questions.
After a moment, the red haze resolves itself in five areas -- one on the path,
Is That Cadirus? What Alignment is he anyway?
How many Gnolls are there? If it is Cadirus then there are 4 of them, I’m assuming 3 normal but with clubs. The other one has some levels. Say Warrior 3?
I also took the liberty of rolling up some Initiative. It worked last time, so if you people want lets give it a go.
Paladin -21 (Natural 20)
Maeko - 20
Warrior Gnoll -19
G1 -18
Shade - 15
G2 - 13
Itches - 6
G3 - 1

Nice job, picking up on my description of detecting evil.
Notice that I did NOT focus long enough to pinpoint every aura -- something else might be in the vicinity. Of course, this doesn't discount the possibility of Cadrius having a tinge of evil to him, but that's not really uncommon for fallen paladins, IMHO.

you expressed some confusion about the Gnolls abilites or i read the post wrong. Both equaly possible.

So, that leaves Itches facing G3, Shade with G2, Paladin and Maeko with WG. Depending on what Itches does, Shade might opt to accept an AOO from G2 and help out the aristocrat.
If he starts singing, though, she might just leave him to his fate. ;)
Maeko
15th of August, 2002, 23:02
Well folks, it seems we have a bit of confusion.
According to the stat block LP posted, his Gnoll War1 has 12 hp, meaning it should be dead already (got 6 from Maeko and 17 from LP) !
Even with maximum hp for warrior it shoud have dropped by now.
Cadrius
16th of August, 2002, 00:19

Truly amazing, and he manages to avoid actually killing anybody.
*sigh*
If only the rest of us could find such peacable solutions . . .
itches
16th of August, 2002, 03:13
Okay i posted, now as to the Gnoll-that-wont-die i sugest two possible solutions.
1) WE ugrade it to a War3 Gnoll by simply adding HP to him and go from here.
2) we decide that he is indeed dead and have somenone deal the finishing blow this round, and ignore anything that doesnt fit.
either way, i did think he was a War3 butit is up to someone else who isnt me. and i did take liberties with my post, i have no idea how that could hapen within game mechenics, but eh, its Free-form
:KO:
as to the non-killing. I dont think now is the right time for Itches to take that step. Though it will be a big one when he does.
Gralhruk
16th of August, 2002, 03:16
I say just bump his hit points up, although even at third level he can't have too much juice left having taken 23 hp thus far. Of course, this leaves Shade without a flanking buddy so I'm reduced to a mere 1d6 damage :(.
Not only that, but given their decent armor class it would probably be wisest if I went with only 1 attack. More sadness.

The stat block I posted is for a generic, 1st-level gnoll; the big guy is a lot tougher than that. (The one that my character offed -- with one swing, no less -- was #1.)
Gimme a minute; I'll make a stat block for the big guy.
Never mind; with Maeko's last attack, it's sort of a moot point, ain't it? Ah well -- if someone wants me to, I'll make it up anyway.
Cadrius
16th of August, 2002, 06:35
Not all the gnolls are willing to fight to the death, of course you guys can give chase.

Cadrius: That gnoll was still alive. Shade always tries to horribly wound them before killing them :).

Of course, I don't think Shade is going to stick around to do any questioning. The tracks ought to lead her right ot Cadrius. Yep, bolting off like a stupid man sounds like what she'll probably do.

And there it is: the gnoll lair.
Just a note: I posted only one guard since we've killed, er, 12 or 14 gnolls. I can't imagine there are all that many left, so I figured they don't have enough manpower (or gnollpower) to mount a huge watch. I also gave her a surprise round (one hit for 17 damage, one miss).
I have no idea how long the others planned on waiting before following, but assume she was travelling for about an hour. I think she'd have little problem tracking them even taking the -5 penalty for moving at normal speed (30). Hopefully, they won't wait too long 'cause this could get ugly.
LonePaladin
20th of August, 2002, 17:39
Artistic license strikes again.
An hour's time, even stalking someone on a trail, can make it well over a mile away. I left the distance vague (of course), but made it within hearing distance; your missed attack will give everyone else reason to hurry, IMHO.
If anyone needs stat-blocks posted on the Monster thread, let me know.
Gralhruk
20th of August, 2002, 22:55
Works for me. I had thought to put a little distance between the ambush site and any guards at the prison area, but I think this works out better. That one guard outside probably would have expected sounds of fighting from the ambush area.
Besides, I'm thinking that this is just the prison area. The actual gnoll encampment is probably a small village located a short distance away from the prison.
Any ideas/objections?
