View Full Version : Wizard's dual

I'm trying to muster interest in a pit fight style game where mages dual with no aid from magic items. All mages start at 10th level. You advance each time you defeat a wizard of your level.
I'm looking for interested parties and on other moderator to help referee.
Rules will be D&D v3.5.
More info as interest develops.

I'd be interested in playing, not moderating. Would all the levels have to be spell casting classes? I have some concepts running through my mind already.

Hmm might be game, what books from D&D 3.5 will you permit for spells and such? What prestige classes?

Lord Twig is actually talking about doing something like this. You might want to contact him, or drop a line in here.

I know the thread doesn't start with a discussion about it, really, but the thread has been "hi-jacked".
On a related note, I would like to play. I've been wanting to try out a Wild Mage(is that it?) from Complete Arcane, and the ice summons from Frostburn. Thought I would get to try that last one in Conjuror's Chess III, but that has been canceled until further notice. Darn tournaments going away..... Makes me mad:cry:

Prelimenary rules
Here's the rules. While in the arena all mages receive the eschew materials feat due to the surrounding mythal. No magic items are permitted in the battle. The duals test the casters inherent abilities alone. Flying is permitted, but you must remain in the dome. Sometimes when a battle grows stale creatures may be released to improve the entertainment. Each combatant will be provided with a Ring of Protection+2 and a +2Dagger.
You can use any published spell from the PHB, Spell Compendium, or The Forgotten Realms campaign setting. If you'd like to use some spell or feat from another source it must be approved by the match referee. You may also choose any feat pending dm's approval.
You must be a straight wizard. No Specialist or multiclassing. No familiars.
Since there are no magic items there is no Spell Resistance, (I can't think of any spell of fifth or lower level that confers SR, tell me if I've mispoken.
Ideally we'll have two refs and eight players.
It'll work like a tournament.
Character Gen
Point buy system P.169 DMG but you get to spend 34 points.
remember to take your ability raises at fourth and eigth levels.
Your spellbook contains all the cantrips in the phb and spell compendium and thirty-five spells of the following levels.
I-9 II-8 III-7 IV-6 V-5
These are the maximums, for instance you may choose to have only one fifth level spell in you book and gain four extra spells of lower levels.
Maximum hit points per level.
I'll add more later tonight.

All wizard? Not even sorcerers? *sigh* Ok.

Ah on second thought I'll pass. I'd rather play something like a multiclassed wizard/prestige class or something (wanted to play an evil necromancer who summoned undead minions and whatnot...heh..might've been interesting).
Have fun.

Well, it seems the "only wizard" rule as killed your tournament. Too bad. Would have been fun.
For those of you that WERE going to play, but don't like that rule, I suggest you look into the link I posted earlier and post your interest there for Lord Twig to see. If he gets enough people, he'll probably run it.

The idea is to test your ability in a spell dual. Which spells you choose and what creative way you hurl them. The sorcerer wouldn't stand a chance against a wizard of equal level unless he got really lucky or the battle lasted for a long time. Thinks like the quicken spell feat would tip the favor to the wizard every time, because the wizard could cast two spells every time the sorceror cast one. (Quicken spell cannot be applied to any spell cast spontaneously.PHB p.98).
However we still don't have enough players to even muster a worthwhile tournament.
The wizard only rule can be lifted if no one is interested in playing a wizard.
Look at the PHB closely and you'll see that a mid-level wizard is very nasty.
If everyone is willing we could make it wide open for specialization, sorcerers and prestige classes. I do not have Complete arcana but that does not mean it cannot be allowed. We would need one more judging player if it's just the four of us, Lando is a good dm, anyone else?
Basically the ref will have to roll the dice for the duelers and keep up with the rules regarding each spell.

I'd certainly prefer it with mixed classes and such, but I'll probably still play either way. More classes would allow for more varieties of battle. Chances are, full wizards will be pretty close to the same, which would make fairly even battles, but having variety would allow for people to see what will work well and when it will do so. I don't know, let's get some other opinions in here.

What I see with the standard "wizard" is that everyone will layer on some protection spells and then fireball/lightning bolt/death ray/prismatic or disintegrate one another.
At least with specialities and such you might get folks who summon critters to battle the other wizard or have to go through the defenses like walls of force/fire etc... it reminds me of the MTG novels where they had the wizards dualing over different styles.
Of course some prestige classes give bonuses for combat oriented mages who can fight nearly like fighters.... so that's another idea too....
I haven't played anything "ordinary" in sometime, of course even "Lando" my namesake (yes, he's a character of mine) didn't stop at being a wizard...he multiclassed and ended up becoming a god of magic eventually...(played him for nearly 20 yrs real time in Oerth).... so I'm game if its got more variety and possibilities.

Well, I should have posted in the Character Acquisition forum a lot sooner it seems.
Anyway, as was said before, I am running an arcane duel in the Tournament section of the board. I have all of the rules posted up and am just waiting for a few more players. So if you are at all interested you can give it a look.

I have not restricted any classes, but there are some requirements on what your character must be able to do. Things like, must have a caster level of 7, must be able to cast at least 4th level arcane spells and must be able to counterspell.
Instead of limiting by level you are given 36,500 experience points to make a character. So if you want to do item creation, you can, but if you do too much, you may only be 8th level going into the match.
Anyway, there is much more and you can see it all on the thread posted above.
I hope some of you join! If not, you can at least watch the fireworks!
