The world is arranged into something resembling the Myriad Planes cosmology, although not quite.
Here's a poor ASCII diagram :
Ethereal
|
Aos - Netherworld
|
Shadow
The Material Plane is bordered by three planes, two are coexistant (The Ethereal plane and plane of Shadow overlap the entire of Aos) while one has a rather more complex connection governed by the Red Moon. Sometimes the Netherworld is seperate, other times it overlaps.
A soul awaiting the Red Moon is likely to be found upon the Prime Material or the Ethereal and movement between them is effortless for the dead. However when the Red Moon comes the souls of the dead are forced to manifest and proceed to the Netherworld (there is no access via the Ethereal or shadow planes.)
No Astral Plane? What about magic?
Yes, I haven't forgotten it. It simply doesn't exist. As such a number of spells and effects are changed.
Non-Functioning
(and therefore non-existant)
Astral Projection
Interplanar message
Planeshift
Conjuration spells which would typically call or summon a creature from another plane still work. The creatures themselves are drawn from bizarre distant planes, the likes of which have not been visited by any dweller of Aos (although many Wizards occupy themselves by trying, effectively attempting to research the Planeshift spell)
Teleportation spells in this world work on the principle of folding space. There is no game mechanic difference
Blocking the Ether
With restless souls roaming the world and freely sliding between dimensions much research has been undertaken in an attempt to afford some measure of protection
Gorgon's Blood : The blood of a Gorgan has an unusual and highly useful effect. It is an impassable barrier for entities on the Ethereal plane. Blood mixed into the mortar or the plaster of a wall renders it as effective as a wall of force against etheral creatures. A pint of blood will treat a 100ft by 100ft area. A typical gorgan provides sixteen pints of blood.
Door's and similar can be treated with blood allowing entire areas to be sectioned off from Ethereal threats (such as Ghosts and other incorporeal beings), however this is a difficult and expensive solution to the problem
