Jimmy's fighting, and pulling through. There's a still a chance we'll lose him, but the doctors are much more optimistic. They have a lot of work to do, and some of his organs are pretty bad off, but if anyone can sneak away from Death, Jim can...

Cheesy small artillery. 60mm and 82mm mortars. The 60mm are pretty wimpy, the 82mm a little more dangerous. As long as it doesn't land right next to you, you're fine. It's the Katyushas that are dangerous.
http://www.veteranen.info/~cedarsouthlebanon/kat/kateng.htm
These things will punch through a wall. They mostly hit the hotels with these, since they are so inaccurate when fired by the insurgents that a huge building is all they can expect to hit.
But's it's the planted or suicide bombs that are really dangerous. That's what we are really careful about. Personally, I don't mind wearing the body armor any more, I figure it's worth the pain in the ass, and besides, it burns calories. I try to stay inside as much as possible. Lots of people hang out by the embassy (formerly Saddam's)pool. That's Russian roulette as far as I am concerned.
We hear the booms or pops just about every day but only one was near enough to really feel it, that was the one that blew up the Green Zone Cafe last week. I was eating lunch about 200 meters away, but inside a guarded compound. Everyone felt that one.
C'est la Guerre! And now, for something completely different...

So I'm wondering if we can sue...
The original specialist said it was just really bad heartburn, and a gas bubble, so just "take Tums like they were candy." Since a doctor said it was okay, Jim did that; his calcium levels are over 16--normal levels are 8.25. His pancreas is 3/4 dead, and (excuse this; but it's what's happening) his bowels are twisting and he's still not stable enough for surgery, so they may just have to do a colostomy. His heart rate's down a bit; still faster than normal, but down, at least...
So still not quite out of the woods. Least the doctors are giving him a chance, though.
Wired*Nun
22nd of October, 2004, 11:54
It depends on if you/he thinks the doc was negligent or did everything he reasonably should have. If not, personally, unless he's wealthy anyway, I would sue, aiming for a settlement, 100-200k or so plus costs. If you do, make sure you get a lawyer that isn't pushing too hard for a big settlement or court, because that's what they tend to do, since they will get 40% normally. Might be worth it.
Of course, the most important thing is he is alive to do it.
LynMars
22nd of October, 2004, 12:11
Considering another uncle is a lawyer, with lots of lawyer friends, our family's usually pretty well covered when it comes to legal matters. It just makes me mad, I guess. So long as he keeps improving, though, that's all that really matters.

Some people just get what needs to be done, done. Lets name a few; Gerard, Benedict, Random (now), Corwin, ect. Heldrik is certainly more in the Get Things Done section of the family ;-). That he gets a dank dusty room bothers him not at all, he has no intention of staying there.

If she took the bait or the bouncing of the low blow or whatever it might be called, then she could have had a good discussion with Heldrik about the Family (and his thoughts). She could have just said it was a cover, never indicating that Landon was hers, his, or theirs and it would have been back in Heldrik's court. Just as well, though, allows Heldrik to get to some things he has been meaning to do while the others are distracted.

HAHAHAHAHHHHHHA. Um yeah, right. Remmber, people who have a lot invested in a certain way of thinking will stick to their paradigm almost beyond sanity, because to change their paradigm is to implictly admit they were wrong in the first place, thus voiding their investment. Witness how both our and the French government have been operating for the past few years...Also, she was being pretty businesslike, for her. She was just making conversation.

He never even got to the Pattern. Sorry that wasn't clear. His teleport bounced him into jail. Ever since the discovery that anyone with Amber blood can bleed all over the Pattern and nuke the multiverse, one needs permission to go to the Pattern, and there's only one way in.
Pygysys
23rd of October, 2004, 04:57
Well it still kind of answers the question regarding how well protected the Pattern is these days. Poor Heldrik, but I suppose someone had to be a guinea pig at some point.
Now to test the wards around the other Patterns... any volunteers? :)

*Hands chalice an extra spoon* My reply bounced, too, Shutter.
I kinda figured there would be wards to prevent magical entry to the Pattern...I'm sure someone would have been fine with it if asked.
I do find I watch very carefully for how, exactly, Dave words what the NPC's say; heck, I tend to carefully word what I say, not so much with Raevyn--she's not tricky enough, usually--But with my other Amber char, and with my current Vampire LARP char, I've gotten people in so much trouble by pointing out, "No, I said this, and you took it the wrong way..." It is something like an art one must pick up over time; took me five years of LARP and ADRPG to figure it out, and that's only cuz some of my friends are very tricksy peoples, who embrace that Machiavellian aspect of the games, sometimes just so they can be nicer people IRL, getting all their deviousness and meaness out through RP.
And if I make no sense, I was up late, am awake semi-early, and the world seems a shade of periwinkle this morning...odd...I think I'll try sleeping a bit longer; I have a busy night tonight. Since There's no space in Shutter's inbox, I'll post here and go  some more...
:P 2am is a fun time...Yeah, that's my PC, although Staff can end up being ordered to do something by our Storyteller, and we comply cuz that's part of our job; we're there to make his work easier, and the story better for the rest of the players (we have something like 40 that show up pretty regularly). In over five and half years of playing, I've never been Prince, though I've come close on occasion; now WG thinks it works for him to have my ruthless little Regent in charge. I's scared! :O

If Flora would have said "Tough falling in love with a relative?" instead of "Object of desire" things would have been different. Boats, castles, and jewels are objects to Heldrik. Gray is not an object, but a person and he strives to treat her as such. What Flora said was an insult to Gray and/or to Heldrik, and it was returned in kind, with a compliment to soften it at the end so that things could get back to being civil and perhaps the conversation could be turned to where Landon was.

:worry: Hrm...Sure she wasn't talking about herself? Flora is rather vain, and knows the effect she has on men, including her relatives. She cultivates it, even.:)
That's what I took it as possibly meaning; while Gray and Heldrik are pretty close--she tends to lean on stronger relatives, though, notice her initial meeting with the family, where she clung to Landon--they haven't shown much else in plain sight of the rest of the family; Arrotel certainly hasn't mentioned it out loud yet, and even Flora can't see everything (though she likes to pretend she can!).:smiling:

This is exactly why Heldrik isn't playing the game right. If he thought it was about Gray, he immediately loses the game if he lets on that that is what he believes, and comes back with a direct answer and/or question.
And don't bother saying "Heldrik doesn't play those games," because they will be played on him whether he likes it or not.;)

And Chalice hits the nail on the head, at least for me. Of course Heldrik doesn't play those games, he has never had to and it will be along hard journey full of bumps and bruises while he learns. Any engagement with an elder is going to be a lost cause unless the Elder wants the younglings to have a confidence boost or something weird.

Actually, I divide Elders/NPCs up into some basic categories: those for whom the 'game' is a way of life (Flora, Bleys, Dara, Mandor, Llewella, Rinaldo/Luke, Jasra, a few others), those who play it well when they have to (almost everyone else) and a few who just won't, but have enough status or power or both that they can get away with it (Gerard, Merlin kinda, Coral). If you have to deal with one of the "always on" folks, you just better learn to play the game, or get enough of that power and status to opt out.

Benedict doesn't fit into the 'opt out' catagory of people? I can't think of any time he's played the game (in the books), but he could just be so good at it that we don't notice... That would be scary.

I have been in an out, if you could not tell, with personal issues plaguing me. To list them:
Court is tomorrow for the big ticket, a lot of options depend on if I have to pay or not.
My big client (the companies biggest) at work is being moved to a different service center and I am getting a new set of clients. I have to transition the old while taking on the new and train the people who will be taking it over, all at the same time.
My roommates are screwing me over. They said they would do a 6 month lease renewal and now one of them wants a year or nothing, while the other still wants 6 months or nothing. I am very likely going to have to find a new place to live over the next 3 months, I did not expect it, and it screws me from being able to save up enough cash for a down payment on a condo.
I have not been posting in OOC, cause I do not want to get on anybodies bad side.

Sal'wey's smaller than the other NPC pics, cause she had way too much background space; when I have to do a lot of alteration (or they make no real sense/don't match up), I tend to end up recoloring the backgrounds. Heldrik's card was a simple recolor, so I left the background (cuz man, it's cool), but many of the others had weird stuff that got chucked. Like hearts on some of the girls'.
Sal'wey's template had the girl holding a flaming sword. That just didn't say "Leader of the Lake People" to me...but it left a big hole that I didn't know how to fill, and there was way too much empty space, so I trimmed it; it's much more obvious on the full sized cards; not all of them are the same size to begin with. I've noticed this when chopping down to the 60x60 pixel requirements for these boards.
Maybe someday I'll play around with creating better backgrounds...I practiced a bit on a card I made for a DnD game here, but nothing spectacular.

There, she comes off as a bit self-righteous, almost as if she thinks she knows more than Random, and is criticizing how he runs his end of the universe, thinking she could, and maybe should as her father's daughter, do better. Or maybe that's just me reading it after a class where we tend to closely analyze and pick apart short stories...:nervous:
:S Hrm...Not much to compare how Gray saw Eric's reign, though, to compare; is she a realist about Eric's own methods and reasonings, or does she view him through rose-tinted shades? Did she even get the chance to see much of her father in a leadership capacity, or only while in her home Shadow, and then, of course, the Curse...
Like I said, I'm analyzing characters and motivations, and how players view their own style of RP and what they try to accomplish with their characters and how they portray them. We've had some interesting pseudo-philosophical questions in that vein in the other forum I frequent. I think it's an interesting thing to explore and think about, to better understand my own RP style and improve it, as well as writing stories, where I have to take several different characters and weave them all believably into a coherent story.

She doesn't necessarily think she could do better...but she's trying to tell Random she thinks he could...or at least, that she needs to believe that, if she's to reconcile her loyalty to her father with serving Random...
Rose-tinted shades about Eric? - hardly. This is the father who chose to put Gray in a possibly permanent nightmare-wracked coma rather than throw all his time into curing her....so that he could devote his time to defending Amber. Clear priorities. She just wants it to have been worth something.
There is another level, at which she is empahasising her 'clash' with Random in case that might prove useful for infiltrating Amber's enemies, too...she wants to look 'usable' to possible enemies...so she's empahasising the bits of truth and reaction that suit her best.
Sometimes it's liberating to have nothing left to lose:smiling:

I totally agree with your last sentiment there Chalice. The Marvel comic book character The Punisher is based off of a man who has had everything that matters in the world killed, in front of him. Now he just goes and lays the smack down on criminals with reckless abandon. A man without fear or a reason to live can be exceptionally dangerous.
LynMars
29th of October, 2004, 13:22
Hrm...Intewesting...:P
There are times I must wonder about her Curse. Is it merely her loss of firm control over her shapeshifting power; kind of like Chaos having gotten a bit strong in her, the shapeshifting occassionally, by necessity, affecting her brain (even to the point of reacting poorly to Trump contact)? She often seems in control, and one must wonder how much of her madness is purely psychological, making her unsure and timid (told often enough you're crazy, you start to believe it, after all, not to mention her relative age and inexperience), how much is an act to off-set possible enemies, and how much is really part of the Curse.
Or is that a secret? http://www.online-roleplaying.com/forums/images/smilies/smiley%20-%20wink.gif
And yes, liberating can be one effect of having nothing left to lose, but in The Punisher's case, it consumes him rather thoroughly. It can easily lead to destruction in extreme cases.

I am glad I only had to deal with Flora.... :-O
Not that I know, but my guess is that Gray has something like ADD (or whatever that attention deficite disorder acronym is). However, because she is a shape shifter it does not only effect her attention span, it effects her entire body. One moment she wants to ride a bike, so her butt is flatter, and her body is more aerodynamic. The next she is thinking about swimming and her fingers and toes get webbing. If you had to constantly concentrate to keep your body from being reactive to every thought you have, but your thoughts regularly jumped from one channel to another, it would be very hard.
Thats my impression, right or wrong ;-)

Lyn, the biggest secret about Gray's Curse is dead simple; it may or may not still be 'active' (I don't know that as a player) but either way it is now the strongest link she has to her dead father, the person she best loved. She doesn't know how to let go of it. Maybe she can learn to, if she finds other ties to put in its place...

Great discussion, folks. This type of thing helps me too.
In looking at some potential next scenes, as well as generally for the future, I would like everyone to try "forget" on their character's behalf that it is unlikely that the GM will kill off a PC without extremely supportable reason. The PCs don't have this view, except in that they think the immortality of youth applies to them. I find sometimes this makes PCs braver than they would be otherwise, which in essence calls the GM's bluff and loses the game for both parties.
I'm not saying this because I disapprove of anything that anyone has done until now, just that in the near future, this principle may be particularly important to keep in mind.

Sorry about all that last night. I was stunned that this guy would do that. I mean, what if I had turned toward him at the critical moment? I'd have been blinded for an hour or two at least.
Since it's half a mile from my trailer to the room where I have web access, and we have to wear the battle rattle (body armor etc.) any time we are outside of a building, it's not worth it to go back, shower, change, put it all back on, walk back, etc. Really annoying. I had a loooooong day at work today, it's after 2230 here and I'm just finishing. On the other hand, the boss gave us all the morning off, so I am going to stay up late tonight and bang this stuff out...barring another bizarre chemical weapons attack on my person.

If you need light relief, I've popped a couple of 'spooky' character diary things into Amber Fiction in honour of Hallowe'en, since two old 'Con games happened to involve ghosts and a vamp:worry:

Maybe a good idea; if he's back in school now, I think, his posting time's a bit less, so it could let you two move at his pace, without holding up Heldrik and Gray, at least until he has a bit more free time, maybe.
Wired*Nun
31st of October, 2004, 15:06
Yes, that and it will give me a chance to give him the attention he deserves. My understanding of this medium is evolving and I am starting to believe that one or two PCs in a thread is at least as good as three, and four is too many. It allows me greater depth, I think.

Critters are an interesting option. I did play one game with a husky half wolf as a companion, but getting stuck in the abyss as Brand's mind slave ended that little venture.

but Josh blushes so easily, it seems...I still wanna know...and it still goes over Rae's head...Unless he'd ever say something about it outloud, which he likely never will, but I'm waiting for Roland to come in, see Josh a brilliant shade of red, and Rae looking all innocent and stuff as she cuddles the sneaky giant rat, who just looks smarmy.

Lester's comment had something to do with a comparison of his and Josh's presumably desirable positions vis-a-vis Raevyn, petting tummies, etc., all with an element of good-natured gloating. You can fill in the blanks.

Will miss Arrotel (especially his sense of humour!) but I think this is a good split - it's appropraite that he should deal with his brother's storyline, and while there are so many NPCs involved, it is easier to have fewer PCs in a thread.
Thanos

Heldrik can be put anywhere you like as long as its not with Flora alone ;-)
I intentionally made the character relatively unhindered so that he could get put where you need him :-)
Icebird

Arrotel is the same way- he's confident that he can handle himself (possibly a touch of developing arrogance?), and flexible to all situations. It seems like a good idea to me to split us up.

I just got my early morning lesson on how the American voting system works. It's very strange to me, interesting but strange. I'm glad we have the system we do, less complicated. ;)
TreyKincaide
2nd of November, 2004, 17:13
Yeah, the electoral college is great. The founders' answer to the layman being too uninformed to vote. Our founding fathers believed we were dumb...true for the most part. Funny thing is the electoral representative can ignore his constituents. They're supposed to take the majority vote of their state and then pick one candidate who gets X amount of votes (A number figured from the population = to the number of House Representatives a state has), but in many cases, historically, they have picked contrarily aligning to their own party affiliations.
Furthermore, historically, there are candidates that have won the electoral vote becoming President when they had lost the population's majority vote for reasons stated above. There has been many a cry to change it, but it appears we're sticking to it for the forseeable future.
*steps down from his soapbox*
Any more and I'll break the cardinal "No politics" rule.
Landon for President!

Wired*Nun
3rd of November, 2004, 00:22
Historically, since all the electoral votes of a state go to the same candidate, there have been few recorded cases of electors changing their votes on their own. Reducing the votes to 585 electoral votes, in state-sized chunks, simplifies things dramatically
The positive side-effect of the electoral college system has most often been that it produces an electoral mandate. Since even a "landslide" in the popular vote is rarely more than a 70/30 split, having a "landslide" produce a 90/10 split of the electoral college produces a much better mandate and dramatically reduces the incidence of recounts. If the "horror" that people on all sides of the plitical aisle dislike is throwing it into the courts, the electoral college's historical ability to keep elections out of the courts is a good thing.
