Collin waves at the dwarf as he leaves, "Thanks again! If we're in town with mysterious artifacts, we'll be sure to look you up again."

As they leave, he notes the alleyway's location so he can bring Unknown back here. Later when the group gathers together, Collin speaks to Unknown, "I believe you stated before that you've run out of some of your spell components, specifically expensive or semi-precious stones? While in town I managed to locate a jeweler. Perhaps we can find you the stones you need to power your spells. If you'd like, I'll take you there when we have a spare moment."

"I have need of my money, I didnt run out of spell components because Ive never bought gems as spell components and do not plan to any time soon. There are much better things i can set my money to, and trinkets, even ones that are good for spells, are not one of them."

The Unknown one approaches the dwarf at the arcane hammer and inquires about enchanting his whip
"Yes, I suppose we could. It will take me a while though I'm afraid, we have had some problems locating materials recently" The dwarf gives a short gruff laugh "I don't understand how that can happen in what is meant to be one of the centre's of trade on Ku'Zul. I get the feeling out suppliers may just be trying to get more money..."
"Anyway, it will take somewhere around a tenday and it will cost around 3000gp for labour and materials. Agreeable?"

Collin reads the note and commits it to memory.

Xaemar is missing. A note was found in his quarters, it explained that he did not feel the teams were adressing the real issues that faced Ku'Zul. He had been talking alot about what his "voices" told him, mainly concerning something called Pandora and invisible demon lords that control the world. His gift for prophecy is very useful to the Vodalian Empire. We have tracked him to a cavern in a sudden rock outcrop, it appears much like a huge spine sticking through the deserts, it is just short of half a days ride south of Djen, it can be seen for a fair distance around and is formed from a red-black rock. You should have no problems finding it. Find Xaemar, he does not trust his ex-team members, persuade him to resume working for the Empire or kill him, his powers and knowledge are both too great to allow to slip in the hands of a rival power.
After this, return to Djen, with Xaemar if possible, and proceed down the alley next to the Giant's Noose. Behind a collection of crates and barrels you will find a passagway leading downwards. Ensure you are not seen entering the passagway.
After you have read and fully understood these instructions, burn this paper

He is forced to reread the following segment a dozen times over, with worry and regret. Find Xaemar, he does not trust his ex-team members, persuade him to resume working for the Empire or kill him, his powers and knowledge are both too great to allow to slip in the hands of a rival power.

Absentmindedly scratching his chin with one hand, and rubbing his holy symbol in the other, he excuses himself and returns to his room for comtemplation. He lies down on his bed, staring up at the ceiling with one hand behind his head. His thoughts go over the letter and their current situation.

Find Zaemar and bring him back. If he doesn't comply, kill him for he knows too much. Why does this bother me so? What do I know? I know the truth, so does that make me a threat? What about the others, they know as much as I, or even more. To murder another spy who might only be looking to get on to a normal life. Afterall, I don't think we can do this forever. At some point I'm sure I'll want to stop doing these jobs. In fact, so far our jobs have been a bit unethical. The whole purpose has been to start wars in other nations instead of taking the fight directly to our opponent.

At that point a shocking revelation hits Collin as he sits straight up. My God, Tempus, what do you think of your servant for performing such an act. What would mother say to me for betraying my oath?

He tears his holy symbol from his neck and stares at it. In a whisper he says to his god as well as himself, "What have I become? I am nothing."

Weeping for himself he then realizes that all is not lost. Wait a minute, Tempus hasn't left me completely. There may be hope yet. Still, the idea that the Vodalians are willing to execute their operatives without serious thought is something I'll have to look out for. If I end up wanting out, how do I go about getting away without them coming after me? More immediate concerns should be watching my back when we go after this Zaemar chap. Now who can I really trust in our group or better yet, whom do I not trust?

( OOC - I'm relying on everyone's good judgement not to take any of this in character stuff as being known by your characters, unless you happen to read minds. Read as the only part your characters could hear is the stuff in quotes. BRR wanted me to roleplay a crisis of faith and with the new adventure, I've managed to lay down some of the groundwork.

Collin's thoughts are rather thought provoking aren't they? Anyone who wants out can be let out, just like the mob. "Hey Vinny, if you're in, you're in for life!" I'm not sure if this is what BRR had in mind, but the way things are going, I sense a disaster on the horizon. The fleeing special forces members might blow up into a full scale epidemic!

Beidamon does have a good idea though. We're 6th level characters and I realized that Collin doesn't have a magic weapon, other then using his spells to create temporary ones. It's doubtful that he'll use the semi-cursed magical axe we picked up. A -2 to wisdom and charisma would really suck, but beign 6th level, Collin doesn't have 4th level spells so I suppose it wouldn't hurt that much. Too bad we're pressed for time, eh Beidamon. ;) )

"3000 Gold? Its sad, here I thought I was dealing with a reasonable dwarf and here you show me that I might not be such a good judge of charecter after all. Thank you, Im sure ill have a laugh with anouther merchant I come across when we discuse your price. Good day Sir"

The Unknown one will then walk away, and keep walking unless the dwarf offers a reasonable price of around 2000 gold.

Varidiir continues to drum his fingers and wait for the others back in the bar. He curses himself occasionally for not learning the regional language. There was little more frustrating than sitting in a bar and not understanding a word anyone else was saying, even if it didn't appear to be all that interesting.

The azer shrugs and looks about him and finally turns around and leaves. If they were to meet anywhere they would meet back at the inn they stayed at last night. He takes his time, walking leisurly among the buildings and townspeople. Coming at last to the inn he walks inside only to see Collin disappear toward his room with a piece of paper.

Varidiir happily seats himself and waits for the others to return.

A few minutes later, Lynores walks into the tavern and takes a seat next to the walking barbecue. "Nice day, eh Varidiir? How about a drink, on me?" Lynores says to him, then calls over a waitress and orders an ale for each of them. "So have you seen any of the others lately?"

The dwarf smiles, "I would be most impressed if you could find another able to offer such services with the current material shortage, nevermind one willing to serve a creature with more than hint of fiendish blood . Good day sir"
He does not look up from his table as he speaks, instead he continues to study Charir's Chain shirt

Varidiir nods and smiles as Lynores approaches him. It was nice to see a familiar face, but it was better to hear a familiar language. He scratches his chin and shrugs, linguistics never was his specialty, punching things was.

"Aye, I saw Collin go up to his room a few minutes ago. He was reading something, a piece of paper."

( OOC - A little rewind here. Collin does his mental thing after the group is informed about the magic item identification, and the passing of the mission objectives. I think I jumped the gun with my last post. )

Back together as a group, Collin lays the magic items they recently identified and explains their properties. He basically repeats everything the Dwarf said.

"We have in our possession, a suit of magical leather with increased flexibility, a non-leathal shortsword, a bone necklace with the power to heal one's wounds at some hidden price, a strength enhancing battleaxe with a curse of stupidity, and half a dozen magical arrows with a subduing burst effect."

[+1 studded leather armour but treat as padded armopur for Max dex bonus, ACP and arcane spell failure]
[+1 merciful short sword]
[each cures 2d8+4 damage, 3 bones left. Radiates a faint aura of evil]
[+2 battleaxe, gives +2 strength and -2 to charisma, wisdom and intelligence]
[ 6 subdual burst arrows, i'll add the description to custom rules]

When Tolven produces the instructions for their next assignment, that is when Collin goes into his depression and the previous post takes affect.

( OOC - okay, now is everything clear? )

"It seems once you get in, its not very easy to get out. If thats what you get for quiting, imagine what your retirement package must be. All that information in your head and you now to old to defend yourself properly, and to useless to keep around. Not a very promising future is it? If only there was a third option eh? A way to get out without those little misunderstandings. Maybe you should think about that for a while during our next mission."

With that the wizard will leave to his room

The_Friendly_Fiend
13th of August, 2002, 04:25
Collin comes to his senses later that evening and goes in search of his friends. "Gentlemen, I would have need to speak with you all in private. Let us adjurn upstairs away from the common room where the walls have ears."

When alone with his friends he asks, "Several questions are raised with our new task. Do any of you know who this Xaemar person is? What sort of fellow is he? What does he look like? Does he have any friends? What kind of capabilities does he have? And does he know we're being sent to bring him back or execute him?"

To Tolven he asks, "The barkeep you spoke to, did he give you any answers? Or did he say this caravan that we're to travel with will provide us some of this most vital information? If we're going to have to face this man in combat, I think it's essential that we know what he can do and how many friends he's got with him."

To the rest of the group he declares, "If we don't get some answers, I'd suggest aborting the mission and returning for home. We're a military special forces unit, not a group of paid assassins. Besides, if this Xaemar informs the world of what Vodalia's doing, we can get into a straight up fight which I would prefer. I can't abide all of this sneaking around. It makes me feel dirty."

WhoNAN
13th of August, 2002, 04:33
"The barkeep will know little to nothing, there is no caravan... it was simply code so he knew to give us the message... which he may not have even read himself. As far as aborting the mission and returning home, that goes against strict orders otherwise... if you are worried for your life, that is not the wisest course of action.... at all. I know nothing about this man, nor should we at this point. I see only one option in any case... we must go to see him. At that point if you don't return I can look the other way... but I will not defect or desert."

Gnarsh
13th of August, 2002, 07:03
"I agree with Tolven. I have nothing against Xaemer, but if necessary, I will assist in the taking of his life. We were given this mission, and I will ensure it is completed. You think we aren't assassins? That's why we're the "special forces." You want a straight fight, go home and request to be put into the army, but I'm not."

Cadrius
13th of August, 2002, 23:57
Varidiir scratches his chin as he is filled in on the mission. The flames from his head dance and flicker as he mulls over the situation. He looks at each of the members of the group as they speak and he watches their facial expressions carefully. Looking back down at his bronze colored feet the azer scratches his chin a second time.

"I don't know," he says looking up again, "I mean we're givin' this guy a chance, right? If we're lucky he'll just turn himself in. But I think I'm seein' where Collin is goin' with this. What happens when one of us wants to retire? I don't want to do this until I'm killed. Maybe if we're lucky he'll attack us first," he trails off and then shakes his head. Various possible situations play out in his mind and none of them end in a manner that he likes.

"Bah, it's good to talk about stuff like this but there's not a whole lot we can do until we get there and talk to this Xaemar."

The_Friendly_Fiend
14th of August, 2002, 11:37
Somberly Collin speaks, "Well, I suppose it's settled then. We'll go in after the guy and subdue him if possible. In fact, we've got a nice weapon to help us in achieving that task." Collin tosses the merciful sword onto his bed. "If that fails, we may have to kill him."

Dramatic pause..."Since we know a little bit about our new target, we should rest up and focus our minds. The guy's an erratic mentalist and may have the ability to turn our brains into swiss cheese or worse, control our actions in order to work against each other." Collin is visibly worried when talking about Xaemer's abilities. "Remember that he's got similar training as we have and can possibly predict our operating proceedures. All told, this is a mission I would rather avoid, but I suppose we're stuck doing it. And while I don't necessarily want to do it, I think I'll try using this new axe, despite the side-effects."

He comes up with a plan, which he shares with the group. "He's in a cave, maybe a local know a little bit about it, size, use, and layout. If it's got miles of passages and no exit, we might collapse the tunnel and seal the man inside. Or as a last ditch plan if forced to retreat, we can collapse the tunnel behind us in order to make our escape. The problem becomes, where is he in the cave, and what to do if he's going to do the same thing?"

Cadrius
15th of August, 2002, 01:29
"Yeah," Varidiir says with his chin propped up on one open hand as he leans against a table, "I suppose he could collapse the place on us. Guess we should bring some picks or something, mine our way out."

"As for the rest, bah I say. I'm thinkin' he can't do any of those weird mind tricks of his when he's gettin' punched in the face."

The_Friendly_Fiend
18th of August, 2002, 07:33
Collin comes up with another plan of action, "Another idea might be to smoke him out. Build a fire and push the smoke into the cave. Doing this will provide two benefits, we'll force him out or he'll suffercate, and we'll be able to see escape routes when the smoke comes out of the ground."

He waits a few moments as the others digest his two plans. "Anyone else have any suggestions? I'm willing to listen. I am however, not going to rush in like our first mission. I want to come back in one piece, and includes mind and body."

Beidamon
18th of August, 2002, 20:56
"Caves get cold you know, if he is living in one he will likely have a way to build fires anda channel for the smoke to flow out of. If we try to smoke him out it may very well do nothing but warn him to get prepared for a attack"

Throwing his arm up in surrender and disgust, he snipes, "I don't hear any ideas coming from the rest of you."

Pacing back and forth across the small room calms him down a bit when he says, "I for one am getting tired of just winging it, but if that's what we're going to do, we may as well get some sleep and head out tomorrow."

Cadrius
21st of August, 2002, 23:31
"Bah, if this guy is as paranoid and crazy as they say he is then he's probably prepared for an attack now. Besides, have to talk to him first anyway."

"Don't think ahead of the curve.... it does no good. First and formost we are to attempt to engage in conversation.... smoking out someone usually doesn't make them feel like talking. We need to get there... and assess the situation then, instead of dwelling over it."

He shifts his weight in the chair. "I suggest we leave in the morning, unless there is other unfinished business here."

The_Friendly_Fiend
23rd of August, 2002, 08:51
When the unit disbands for the night, Collin once again rests on his bed, contemplating their situation. Perhaps I should get out of this room. A nice walk might do me some good. He leaves the inn and begins walking aimlessly around trying to clear his head.

The shadows take over to blanket the town in darkness. Collin's oblivious to the night until he looks about in confusion. Where in the world am I? I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere.

Three men stalk the priest. Stepping out of the shadows, one of them clubs Collin over the head. The young priest collapses in a heap but remains concious. "Get 'iz purse. I heard the jingle of gold on 'im." Says the leader.

Gasping in wonder and hate, Collin stands up to the ruffians. Thugs to the worst degree, they're no match for a well armored man in a straight up fight, so they begin to back away. When he gets to his feet, Collin issues forth a battle cry as he races torward the closest thief while drawing his axe, but his weapon isn't there! In his absent mindedness, he forgot his axe in his room!

The three men are are nearly as surprised as he is. Here in the alley an unarmed man in a breastplate comes charging to life after getting bonked in the head. All this and he's issuing a battle challenge in the name of Tempus. Cowards at heart, the two underlings flee. The leader however knows and wants the loot he's worked for, so he brandishes his sword and advances towards Collin since he sees him unarmed.

Collin draws his dagger and with his holy symbol in his other hand calls for Tempus' aid. "Tempus, grant me aid to put down this thug who shows no respect for the laws of war!"

The thug looks around, ready to leap out of the way or for an opening when some divine power is brought forth, but nothing happens... Collin is stunned by the lack of response and this all the rogue needs as he springs forward, driving his blade into Collin's flesh. Blood gushes from the wound and from his mouth as coughs, gasping for breath.

"Tempus," he gurgles. "Why has thou forsaken me?"

Darkness begins to decend on him as he knows the fatal blow is about to be struck. In that dark is a peace, a sense of well being and joy. A voice calls to him. It rides the whispers of the night. "Strike hard...retaliate...you are not alone...love and embrace your hate, let it guide your hand...STRIKE!"

The fog rolls away as Collin struggles to gain his feet and lunge at his assailant. His dagger bites deep as he tackles the thief. His holy symbol flies from his hand as he reaches around the filthy leather armor. From an observer's point of view, one would have seen Collin's fist enveloped in a shroud of darkness. A horrific scream comes from the rogue not as the dagger is twisted in his guts, but when Collin's hand touches his back. They collapse in a heap and there they remain for what seems to be hours.

As the minutes roll by and the adrenaline high goes away, Collin returns to consciousness. Shaking his head to clear away the cobwebs, he winces in pain. He assesses his injury where the sword cut into his side. With a grunt he heaves his armor off and takes a better look. There's blood everywhere but where the gash should be is a scar long since healed. Astonished, he checks over the rest of body. The broken rib has been mended, and the blood he spit up before is drying. The pain eases away and completely disappears.

His dazed state comes to an end as he stumbles around, picking up his equipment. He takes up his dagger and cleans off the blood. He quickly dons his armor and then begins to look for his holy symbol. He finds it but for some reason it isn't the same. Uttering a simple prayer for light, the symbol flares up allowing the details to become visible. The blazing silver sword has become a mailed fist. He's about to drop it and begin searching again, but compusion forces him to drape it across his neck and tuck it beneath his breastplate.

Tired and exhausted he returns to the inn where he quickly falls asleep. A fitful rest he gets that night, one blanketed in dreams. Just before dawn when the sun begins to crest over the desert sands, he wakes up, better rested than ever before. Gathering his possessions, he dons his armor and tucks his holy symbol underneath. Prepared for day ahead, he exits his room and the inn. He marches through the deserted streets, past the bakers who's ovens are hot and ful of today's fresh bread. Finally he stops at a tailor's shop. A small cord hangs beside the door which he rings three times before he's allowed entry.

"I was told to come here," he tells the tailor. "I'm to show you this." The silver fisted symbol is brought out. the tailor take one look at it and nods. "I don't have much time. I need to return before they suspect anything for the time isn't right for them to know."

"But they'll suspect things," the tailor says. "They can't be all that dumb. I think it would be best to just tell them. Just say to them that your sessions of meditation have cleared your mind and conscious. It is afterall the truth." He pauses and looks Collin over. "Now then I have some work to do don't I?"

The sun rises, bathing the city in light. By the time the inn stirs, Collin is back in his room, mediating and praying to his god. When he hears the footsteps outside in the hall, he gets up and proceeds to join the rest of companions for breakfast.

Careful now, this loon could be a lot more dangerous than ye think.

Once he finishes he smiles happily and says, "We all ready?"

The azer seems almost eager to start the mission. While the thought of assassinating some poor sod who merely wished to quit the game doesn't sit well with him, he is more than happy to spend some time in the desert. Finally a place where he can relax and enjoy the weather!

"I believe I am," replies Collin. "We can run through the marketplace to buy provisions, but there is something that I am concerned about. If we take our horses with us, there's no guarentee that they'll be safe when we're forced into the caves. I don't think they'd want to go in with us, nevermind the fact that we don't know how large the complex is. They might not fit." He allows that to sink in before continuing. "I'd suggest stabling our horses and buying a mule or donkey to carry the provisions. Sure we'll be slower but at least we won't lose our mounts. If you're not worried about your horses, we can just proceed with them."

The stable boy in the Raven tells the group that it will cost them four silver pieces per animal to leave them stabled there for the day.

It doesn't take long to locate a place in the markey where you can buy mounts, the man has a fairly small variety of creatures, having around half a dozen horses and over two dozen mules and donkeys that you can see as you argue with him about prices

[ooc: Prices areas the PHB, or you can get a mule, riding saddle, bit and bridle for a discounted rpice of 15 gold pieces.]

"One mule with a pack saddle and harness," is what Collin requests from the horsetrader. "And make sure the beast isn't too tempermental, or else I'll teach it to kick on command before bringing it back to you for a reunion." He smiles at the man as he says that.

Following the trip to get the mule, Collin makes another purchase, for a few day's worth of trail rations. Before leaving the town he also fills his waterskins from a pubic well.

As the the city gates trail behind the group as they wander off into the desert, he sings quietly to himself and his new mule, "Oh, we're off to see the psion, the wonderful psion of Vod..."

And so after extensive prepartions to escape the desert heat the group set out across the inhospitable ruby sands
The desert is devoid of life, except for the occasional long dead tree and bird flying overhead
Despite immunity to the scorching heat of the desert the group feel the heat and sweat heavily (except for Varidiir, who finds the heat very pleasant).
It is not long long before the large rock outcrop where Xaemar has taken refuge is visible, the rocky spire sticks out of the ground in contrast to the low rolling dunes that surround it, it looks something like an enormous blackened tooth.
After over three and a half hours of travelling the group reach the spire, it is largely formed from a black rock but has large amounts of very small strange red spirals across it.

A large natural cave mouth greets the team as the reach the edge of the outcrop, the sand around it doesn't seem to have been disturbed recently but the desert winds quickly cover any markings in the sand. The area around the cave mouth offers no hidng place, there is simply the sandy ground that slowly becomes a hard rock surface and the sheer side of the outcrop. Inside the cave mouth there is no light but the ground clearly slopes downwards

The dark elf is greatly refreshed as he leaves the hot glare of the sun for the cool dark innards of the spire.
The floor slopes downwards for a good way until eventually it opens out into a flat-bottom cavern, there is a large pool of water of unknown depth against the opposite wall, the walls and floor are very smooth and the ceiling is around eight feet tall. Occasionally staligmites and stagilitites are dotted around the cavern. The smell of smoke is clear in the air of this room and light spills from a passageway to the left
Looking into the light room a small fire can be seen, a lantern and several torches fixed to the walls. The fire is in the centre of the cavern beyond, a small kettle hangs above it warming gradually. The lantern is on the stone floor near to one of the walls, on a cushion by this a man sits, he wears a tattered grey robe and faces away from you, he seems to be meditating. The torches are crudely fixed to the walls by iron spikes but they light this entire room. The fire has several cushions scattered around it, the only other object in the room is a fairly large chest by the meditating man
As far as Tolven can tell the man is not aware of his presence

"I wonder if this plan might work. Tolven hides behind our target while we offer up the appearance of diplomacy. If a diplomatic solution isn't reached, he can simply shove a knife in his back. Easy as pie, don't you think?" Collin looks for approval from his friends before realizing something sigificant. "Uh, Tolven? Are you still here? Drat! So much for that plan."

"He seems to be alone, meditating... unaware of our presence at the moment."

"Welcome. I knew that you were coming and I can guess why. You have been sent here to execute me, the deserter."
The man stands up and turns around to face the group
"But first there are things you must know ... where are my manners, please sit down."
The man points to the fire and the cushions that surround it

Collin takes a seat while studying his surroundings, looking for exits, peepholes, and concealed people. As he settles into his cushion, his attentention focuses on Xaemar. He takes in his appearance and compares it to the one from the academy. Has he aged, is the so-called maddness gone, or has he become even more unstable. Next he's scrutinized as a possible threat, weapons, triggers, and possible magic items like psions would use.

With Xaemar's last remark, Collin responds, "That would be a neat trick, friend. They both perished on our way here. And..." Collin is cut short as Tolven reappears. His emergence stalls and befuddles Collin's speech, but he manages to clear his throat and apologize. "Uh, I'm sorry. I thought you ment our other companion, who is as I was trying to say, buried in Seran. Died a gruesome death at the hands of some bandit scum."

With a sniffle, Collin wipes his nose. "May his soul rest in peace with the knowledge that his murderers perished."

Regaining his composure, he asks of the host, "How about it, come with us and pay your respects to our fallen companion. In your own group, I'd almost guarentee that they're grieving your loss. So, come back and explain it to them. I think you owe it to them to tell your side of the story in person. Unfortunatly Collin can't see the look flashed in his general direction.

"Xaemar, we were sent to bring you back, and you know the stakes all too well of this as dictated by what we do, I am not going to give you anything but the truth.... We also might find ourselves in your similiar situation if we do not wish to die in the service of the forces. "Well, I have no reason not to believe that you have indeed lost one of your team-members, that is ... tragic. Thank you for your honestly my good elf"
Xaemar sits down on his cushion and faces the group

Collin looks at the man, it does indeed appear to Xaemar, but he is not quite how you remember him. No longer does he speak in short confused bursts, perhaps he has finally managed to assert some control over his voices.
Xaemar is clearly armed, a light mace hangs from the belt that he wears around his waist over his robe. The man appears to wearing some form of armour under his clothing, you can hear a slight jingle as he sits down, possibly chain links banging together. On the back of each of his hands he has a strange tatoo, they seem to shift slightly as Collin looks at them. A multifaceted crystal is worn on a short leather thong around his neck. Xaemar also has a small leather pouch tied to his belt, but it is impossible to judge what it contains

"So, as I said, there are things you must be told."
Xaemar takes a deep breath
"There are two real threats to Ku'Zul and possibly the world beyond. The first is one you have already seen. Pandora, there is little I know about the Goddess, she is a truely ancient power who was sealed in the earth. As of late she seems to have weakened her restraints and is granting her power to those that promise her their souls. Her church grows stronger, I'm not sure what is needed to release Pandora, but I doubt a large amount of followers and souls is going to make things any worse."
The psion looks at each of the team members in turn
"The 'Pandorians' are strong now, I'm fairly certain they are going to attempt to take over a town in the coming months, if they succeed it won't be long before they take another, and another. But ... I have been incorrect before, the people in charge of the teams think I am wrong again, they don't believe that a relgious cult would dare to attempt something so direct."
"This is a very real threat, I am sure about this. Vodalia is wasting it's time in it's conquest of the world, the attack on Dauthim would be the perfect time for the followers of Pandora to begin their own conquest."
"However, the loss of Vodalia is not the issue here. It is far greater, if Pandora is released we will have a God walking across the world. I dread to think what would happen if we turned a blind eye to this threat."

"The second threat is already here and, potentially, could be just as destructive. The world is being manipulated by a force beyond my vision. I know so little of what it is but I know it is someone linked to our plane of existence while not being of it."
Xaemar takes another breath
"It is very hard to explain what I know, or what I think I know, in words. But trust me, there is some great force, aside from Pandora, that is arranging things to it's own liking. I could even just be a pawn in the bigger picture, but still I will work to find out more."

"I could not stay in the forces. The leadership focuses on Conquest of Ku'Zul and not the real threats to Vodalia and the rest of the world. I must ask for a favour, go back. Tell them I am dead, that you killed me for being a traitor, just allow me to continue to explore the real threats to the world. With the eyes of the forces not searching for me, I will be able to do more.My own team were fanatics, they did not think ofr themselves, they just served. They may well miss me, and I count them as friends, but ... I am hoping that my first impressions oif you were correct and you will consider the situation for yourselves"

Xaemar looks expectantly at the group

Varidiir does what he always does when a situation confuses him. He first scowls and then scratches his chin as he attempts to wrap his mind around the problem before him. They were told that this man was rather crazy, but at the same time he made a very compelling argument. But was that all part of his insanity? He might be a nutcase but a very persuasive one. Or even worse, he might be telling the truth.

The azer scuffs his feet a couple of times and looks around to the other members of the group, unwilling to speak first after such a story.

Gnarsh

Lynores sits still for a couple minutes, considering the options. Either kill Xaemer for the good of Vodalia, or let him go free for the good of the world. "Very well, Xaemer. If you speak the truth, in the long run your leaving the forces will be for the greater good of Vodalia. I'm willing to let you go on your way to accomplish that. But I swear, if you're discovered to be alive by the Forces, I will hunt you down myself before I'm court martialed." He rises and glances around at the others.

"You want something from us, that's fine I suppose, but if we're to fake your death, I think it's time for you to give us something in return." Collin's tone is dead serious as he stares into Xaemar's eyes.

"For one, how do you know about Pandora and the cult's operation methods? Do you know someone inside or did you pick apart someone's mind?" Leaning back a bit on his cushion he continues. "If Pandora is a god, and if she returns to the world, what makes you think that the other gods would allow her to run around unchecked? The gods might not walk the earth, but you can still feel their presence and power."

Next he scoffs when beginning his next series of questions. "The world's always being manipuated by unseen forces. Even though the gods sleep, you can feel their pull. How else do you explain divine miracles and religious dogma? To say that the world is being manipulated behind the scenes has got to be the biggest understatement of the century."

He sneers before saying, "From your prognostications being so general, learned men would dismiss them and call you a charlatan. I could do the same by saying I see an important decision in your future. One that may alter your life for good or ill. So, if you want to show your goodwill, give us something more tangible. If you were in our place, would you trust the word of an accused traitor?"

BigRedRod
13th of September, 2002, 19:20
"Picking apart a mind is not neccessary, and I doubt that it is possibly to have a source from within. The cult members gradually change their physical form, I think they aspire to their God's view of mortal perfection. Most followers of the God's do, but Pandora ... is a Goddess of Chaos and Change, it is hard to say exactly what she has power over but the changing forms of her followers are quite a large clue."
Xaemar stares directly at Collin as he speaks

"I was made aware of the cult by your own actions, your encounter with a creature claiming to be a High Priest of a Goddess I had not before heard of, travelled down to those of us working in Dauthim shortly after you reported back in Vodan. It interested me but I thought little more of it, I continued to work until the 'voices' began to whisper about Pandora and her followers. I gave a guild of thieves a large amount of coin and told them to let me know of any mention of the Goddess or her followers. I didn't recieve much news just the occasional rumour about small strange cults, but every scrap of information helped. I managed to find other pieces of information about the Godess, mainly that she was sealed her long ago by other Gods for some reason. You have seen a follower, this means she must have shrugged off some of the restraints imposed upon her"
The Psion takes a breath and runs his fingers through his hair

"In ages past Gods could manipulate the world directly whenever they pleased, all the ancient texts and relgious texts seem to agree about this. But none mention an actual God walking the mortal plane. I am sure the Gods would be displeased but I'm not sure that in their current distant state they could do a damn thing"

"As for the unseen force that I feel meddling with fate, you are quite true. But the 'voices' are insistant that something is amiss here. You have every right to say what you do but I was only recently made aware of this power and have not had time to study it"

"I am seen as a madman, one who speaks with demons and spirirts, and now I am a traitor. It is not the best background, it is hard for me to explain the 'voices', I do not belueve there is more I can say."

The_Friendly_Fiend

"Goddess of chaos and change...followers who alter their appearances...how are we to believe that you really are Xaemar then?" Collin raises an eyebrow (ala The Rock)

"Okay, assuming you are Xaemar then, what you say about the gods not walking the earth is fine, but how do you explain away Pandora's imprissonment? If she wishes to bring chaos to order, she'll not only destroy the world, but all of her followers, and herself. I doubt that even a god would want to do that."

"Your ideas and reasonings are those of utter madness. You said it yourself, you're a madman that hears voices. But, I might be persuaded into believing that you hear these voices. Would you tell me what those voices told you, as accurately as possible. And would you consent to be placed within a zone of truth while you spoke? It's not that I don't trust you, but well, it is that I don't trust you. The other side of the coin is that people who hear unseen voices might not be hearing a superior power, but an invisible person playing tricks on them. The truth spell would pick up on that since your subconscious is more aware of what's going on around you."

A brief pause, "There is another matter. You said you read our reports, how'd you obtain them? And if you would, prove that you did gather information from them by telling us in more detail what was written in them. So far you've only hinted and given vague statements about the events. I thought you were serious when it came to this subject you wanted to share with us. If that's the case, you had better stop beating around the bush and lay your cards on the table." Gone are the smiles, Collin's jaw is rigid with his eyes focused on Xaemar. He patient enough, however, to get some more answers.

"You misunderstand my words, the followers of Pandora slowly change in form, not at will. If I was one of them I would have to have disguised myself very well indeed."

"She may well destroy the world if she is released, but that is heresay, perhpas even the Gods themsevles do not know. As for why she was imprisoned here, well the ways of the higher powers are mysterious but it is my personal belief that it was the doing of the Elder Gods, keeping her imprisoned was simple enough, but with their loss her bonds weakened, again this is merely guesswork."

"I did not say I was a madman but that is how I am percieved. Describe the voices? How can I describe a colour to a blind man? The voices are not simply something something that speak to me in visions, it is so much more and so very much more difficult to explain. If you wish though, you may place me into a zone of truth and I will repeat all I have said once again."

"Nor did I say I had read your reports, we hear the occasional detail and that is all. I am sure if we had been doing more than simply working our way into key roles in Dauthim , so as to aid in the invasion, you would hear things about our team. My cards are on the table, however, you seem intent on questioning whether they are indeed cards and if the piece of furniture is actually a table, but I must admit this is perfectly understandable behaviour given the situation"

Xaemar keeps a slight grin as he talks, it is strangely disconcerting.

[ooc: btw, the elder Gods were V'ran and Xzar, they seem to have dissapeared during the sealing, when Xzar attempted to Fuse with the world, thereby gaining power over it. See the paragraph on sealing under custom rules for a little more info. I'm not too sure why I put that in the custom rules, I may move it]

Varidiir thinks he understands these things but what does it mean for them? To fake his death so that he can continue to observe what might be the destruction of the world?

"Er," he says, clearing his throat and feeling uncomfortable, "shouldn't someone be tryin' to stop Pandora's followers? I mean, if he's right what would that mean for us?"

If in the very least, telling the religious sects about this rising cult will stir them into action." He extends his hand to Xaemar. "We've got your word that you'll make no attempt to escape? The journey is hard and the dusty winds make it more difficult to travel across the hot sand. Finally after over four hours of travel Djen can be seen, the group approach the gate, a gatekeeper steps out and takes a breath ot speak, but before he can Xaemar strides towards him and places a collection of coins into his hand,
"Save your over-pricing for stupid merchants. I know the toll and that is all you shall get" Xaemar speaks quickly and gruffly to the man
The Gate-keeper looks at the coinage in his hand and look at the group, he waves the group in and steps out of the way.
The gateway is almost deserted, the southern gate is smaller than the northern through which you originally entered the town

The inside of the town of the town is also nearly deserted, even the market up ahead has been packed away. Xaemar looks around with a slighlty smile on his face, and then turns to the group and looks expectantly at them,

Varidiir turns his head away from their newfound friend and scowls. He wants to believe that the man has no ulterior motives or tricks up his sleeve, but he seemed entirely too willing to go along with Collin's suggestions. He shrugs, at least he didn't have to kill the man unnecessarily.

"Busy place, isn't it?" he asks, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

Collin grabs Xaemar by the front of his shirt and lifts him up on his toes so their faces are more or less level. Anger sweeps across his eyes as he says in a low voice, "What is the meaning of this? You knew something was going to happen. Why didn't you say something back in the cave?" He drops Xaemar back to his feet and pushes off so the two aren't standing on each other's toes. "Don't move!"

He turns back and walks towards the gate and the guard. "Guard! Can you explain what happened? We left not one day ago and the town was bustling with people and business. What caused the townsfolk to disappear so?"

((I apologize for the leave of absence... back now))

Tolven moves to Xaemar...

"Collin is a bit jumpy.... " The normally quiet Drow... surprises himself, in the editorial comment pausing a moment.

"The forces wanted you back, that was our priority... to have you return with us that is. Do you know anything about the current situation at hand?"

((BRR: Tolven is and has been attempting to Sense Motive on Xaemar... if anything was percieved that was different from what has already been posted... if not don't worry about it))

[ooc: As far as Tolven can tell, nothing is wrong. Xaemar just seemed relived to see Djen again]

Xaemar grips both of Collin's arms and speaks in a very quiet voice
"Are you Stupid? It is mid-afternoon and you are in the desert, the people are asleep. Why are you trying to make a scene here?"
Xaemar pulls himself free of the Cleric with relative ease, the man is suprisingly strong, he turns to the men manning the gate and smiles
"Don't worry, He is a little touched by the sun, we had best get him inside" The psion speaks reassuringly
The confused men at the gate suddenly smile, one speaks up in a slow voice,
"Don't worry, you just 'ave yourself a nice little lie down out of the sun, you'll feel better after that."

"Fine, then let's get this over with. The sooner we scribe your notes, the sooner we can get out of this inferno." Collin begins walking off to the rendezvous point. Without a backwards glance he says to the others, "Bring him."

Xaemar follows unaided, the smile he wears on his face more or less all the time is becoming increasingly irritating.
As the team move through the town the streets become slightly more active, people are awaking to continue their days work now that the sun is dropping in the sky. However the air remains dry and very warm, as it has done since the group have been in the area.

The alley behind the Giant's Noose is rather narrow and completely shaded. The alley is deserted, about ten feet down it turns sharply to the left and abruptly stops. The dead end has a collection of crates and barrels leaning against it, the street passing before the tavern is not visible from this position
Xaemar speaks up,
"I did not believe I would be stood here again, still I fear that this 'reunion' may not be the most joyous of events."
His smile is wavering and he glances behind him a number of times,
"Still best to get it over with, it's just those two boxes that need moving really, then you can slip through and pull them back to conceal the passage."
The Psion takes a deep breath and starts rubbing his hands nervously

Varidiir cranes his neck and looks up at the two humans. One burning eyebrow is raised as he looks back and forth between them. At first he sides with Collin. It is strange to see such a lack of people here? Why aren't they working? Back home they didn't quit simply because it was too hot, hell his home was pretty much one big inferno. Still these were humans they are dealing with and they don't take heat quite as well as an Azer does.

So he shrugs and merely walks along with the others as Xaemar leads them to the alley behind the Giant's Noose. He shrugs and bends himself to the task at hand, moving the crates aside.

Tolven moves the boxes quickly, and gives a wry glance at collin, since he has seemed to enjoy the tendencies of leading.

"After you."

And continues to wait through the others proceeding through the passage, and finally once the psion is ready he follows him in replacing the crates.

With the doorway cleared, Collin marches Xaemar forward into the building. "Welcome back. I'm sure you'll be the star of tonight's festivities. You can spill your cryptic answers to someone else who isn't tired of hearing them. So far you haven't been able to tell me anything concrete. It's all speculation, theory and hypothesis. It makes for an interesting bedtime story though."

At this point, Collin play acts telling a scary story to a child, "Oooh, look out young ones, for if you're bad boys and girls, Pandora will awaken and swallow the world whole! Oooooh...aaaahhh." He then laughs and follows through the door.

Xaemar walks down the corridor, with Collin close behind and Tolven taking up the rear
The corridor is fairly short and unlit, after a few steps Xaemar pushes through a heavy black curtain before him. Behind the curtain the corridor opens up slightly giving a little more room for movement. This area is lit with several torches
The only other way out of this room is a solid looking oak door, Xaemar knocks. Small grate slides open and then shuts. A moment later the door is opened, a well-dressed man gives the group a nod,
"You are expected in the back room" The man speaks in a very polite voice (in Dauth), and indicates a door across the room
The rest of the room is filled with tables and groups of men sit playing various card-games, large piles of coins are moving between the men. Around the edge of the room there are a number of equally well-dressed (tight-fitting, well-made, white shirts with high collars, and eqaully well made black trousers) much larger men, each also carries a weapon at their side
Xaemar walks across the room and opens a thick door with one of the large men on either side
The room beyond contains a large table and little else, a man sits at the table and looks up as the group enter,
"You're back! I'm so glad, but we musn't talk here"
The man looks at the team
"A job well done, follow me"
He strides over to one of the walls and pushes a brick, it slides into the wall and the wall "folds" inwards, the man walks into the room beyond with Xaemar following closely behind
The room is fairly large, it contains two desks, one at either side of the room and a circular table in the centre. There are some familiar faces sat at the table, Amra Eveningfall is here as is Eberc and two brand new ones. Amra stands up as Xaemar enters and runs towards him, she gives him a hug,
"I knew you would come back to us," she looks at the group "Thank you for talking sense into him"
Xaemar speaks in a quiet voice,
"I'll admit it's nice to back, I missed you all too. I even missed all that secirity messing about"
The wall slowly "refolds" leaving no evidence of the passagway except for a red brick in the wall on this side.

The man turns to the group and speaks,
"Take a seat, it is time to talk ...."
