Alright, not that many seem interested in Deadlands so lets see what might
draw in some players.
Any one here interested in a Legend of the Five Rings OR Earthdawn game?

As a novice to the whole RPG thing, I've only played DnD, up as far as third edition. If you explain this 'five rings' and 'earthdawn' you speak of, and tell me where I can get a hold on the rules, then there is a fairly hefty chance that I will be unable to resist; drawn to the game like a moth to a flame as a consequence...

I'd be interested in Lo5R game, but haven't read through the d20 rules (own the original rulebook for it). If its a non level-based system (like it seems most d20 are) I'd be interested.

Wow...Earthdawn.. That takes me back... As I recall the basic system with Earthdawn worked a lot like Shadowrun.
Hmmm... I'd be more up for a LO5R game...but I haven't played either the independent system or the D20... but D20 is D20, thus easy to pick up
as long as you've got some core material...
Both sound cool in any case.

Well guys I don't use the d20 rules for Lot5R
I use the actual "Legend of the Five Rings" RPG Second Edition(don't worry
its easy to talk you through the changes into 2nd Ed. if you got the 1st Ed. book)
I'm not a fan of using "d twenny" for anything other than various D&D settings(both official and not)
Oh, and Alcotroll, if ya find the Players Guide to 2nd Ed Lot5R you've got the only book you really need. For Earthdawn, look for the new edition by Living
Room Games. That book is all you'll need until you have a charcter reach above
8th Circle(not something that'll happen for a LONG time of playing).
I'm up for either game
If I get enough interest in both, well... I'LL RUN BOTH!!!

Oh, and as a HUGE fan of the setting, if I get a lot of interest for Lot5R but for d20 I will get the core stuff for Rokugan d20.

That's funny OwariDa, my gaming group is just about ready to start playing Earthdawn again. Yours truly will be the game master. Too bad you weren't over here, it seems that we play and enjoy the same games.
As a side note, maybe if there was enough interest, I'd run the same game here using pbp.

I've always wanted to play Earthdawn, but have never gotten around to picking up the book. Hmm...
OwariDa
13th of December, 2003, 05:33
well it seems that Lot5R has the most PBP possibility
everyone that will with out a doubt play sound off confirming it!
Oh, and Friendly_Fiend, if your up for playing Earthdawn round up some players
and this is just my inner gamer pleading...er, begging actually, GO BUY THE BOOK Cadrius !!! I've wanted to run Earthdawn seemingly FOREVER!!(I've only PLAYED the game hand full of times)
The Alcotroll

Someone make a decision then. Earthdawn or five rings. Then I can go get hold of some rules and work out what I'm letting myself in for. :)

If I run Earthdawn, I'll need at least four players who own the book and can post at least once every three days. It sounds like I only have one player with a book right now. And I don't think there is an on-line version of the rules, so no joy there. If I have enough interest by next week, I'll run the epic long game.

What is this Earthdawn? I know its something like the precursor to Shadowrun or something, but I have no other information...
Care to enlighten me?

I'd be all about either one, but I only have the first edition rules for each.
Are the updates that drastic?

There are changes to some of the adepts and their talents (what they get, and when they qualify for them). Some of the spells were reworked and the skill system took on a major overhaul. Combat and gaming concepts for the most part changed very little. If you're interested in how the game works now, you might be able to find a little something at the livingroomgames.com website. Livingroom Games is the new owner to the Earthdawn rights.

thanks for the help Fiend
as for Lot5R, no the rules weren't changed THAT drasticly
give me a little bit and I'll let ya know the changes
off the top of my head, one of the MAGOR changes is that when making
Skill checks you roll your Skill and keep your Trait, as opposed to first eds
roll Skill+Trait THEN keep your Trait. Basicly they changed it so that newly
created characters aren't already rolling close to MAX dice pool.
Traits & Skills each go from 1 to 10 now instead of maxing at 5
I'll find some of the other changes for ya.
Oh, and stealthbanana check out the site Fiend mentioned for Living Room Games for setting info on Earthdawn. Its easier than me givin' ya the story
here.

If Earthdawn is a common consensus then I'll see about getting some literature. Had a look at the site and am happy to report that the man from Del-Monte says yes.
As for posting regularly, well I have access to the interweb from Uni' computer clusters, and people even think I'm working!

hello I was wondering if i could join in on the lo5r game? I am a fairly new gamer that would like to find a new game to begin in.I have played vampire the masquerade and vampire darkages i played shadow run only a few sessions and created a character for rifts . the place where i played changed games before finishing a campaign in one it would switch to the other so i neever got to finish a game. the only problem is i don't have the materials for lo5r or the character creation rules but i am willing to post regularly

it would be real helpful if ya had either version of the Lot5R rules from AEG.
OwariDa
16th of December, 2003, 04:59
it seems that the ratio is 5:4 in favor of Lot5R
I'll see about getting my own little corner of the board for it shortly.
OH, and don't let that make you think I won't run Earthdawn!!
4 interested parties is go for me, but I'll hold off on it a little while.
That way Alcotroll can rustle up a copy of the rules.
and anyone else that needs too, aswell.
OwariDa

One more thing
what system is prefered?
I love the original, but a good number of you may not have access to the
original Lot5R rules.
if the magority says, "Go d20", I'll begrudgingly consider it.
Please try and get a hold of the original rules though, I'm hurting in the wallet
right now and it could seriously slow down when we can get the game off the ground.
Ah, winter...

paychecks go down

Actually, I'm going to stick with the original rules for now.
If that puts to many out of the game I'll do something with d20 Lot5R once I have the material myself.
Honestly, it shouldn't be that big of a deal if ya don't have the rules as long as
you can find a info about the setting. If you can tell me what you want to play
as far as concept I'll make you up a character (with your directions, of course).
The rules really aren't any thing complicated at all. I beleive I can walk ya through it fairly easy.
for Info on the setting start at www.alderac.com and if thats not good enough for you Google that #!@$ down!

Had a look at that website and I can see a vast wealth of books all detailing different things, mainly individual clans. What I can't see is anything resembling a basic player's handbook, D20 or otherwise. Where should I be looking?
Also, am I gonna need some of those clan books? It looks like you need a seperate book for each clan and class, and you ain't the only one on a budget.
OwariDa
17th of December, 2003, 19:33
Don't worry man
all you need is the 2nd Edition of the original system's Player Guide
the clan books are further detail into the specfic clans
Example:
You can play a Phoenix clan magic user right out of the main rules
If you want the rules to play a Tensai THEN you need the Phoenix Clanbook!
Tensai are specialist mages that come from the Isawa family of the Phoenix Clan.
and really, I'll get you through any rules issues and character creation even if you can afford the rules. Both basic AND specific rules.
Just worry about looking into the setting and coming up with a character concept, which may be as simple as finding out the flavors of the different Clans.
The Alcotroll
18th of December, 2003, 04:08
Legend of the five rings, player's guide, second edition; Check.
I'll read through it and come up with a character concept by the end of the night, assuming I'm sober enough to type.
The Alcotroll
18th of December, 2003, 09:29
Right. Well my original character concept was either a male Samurai or a female Ninja. Having looked at the background I've modified that slightly, to a Dragon clan Bushi or a Scorpion clan Saboteur. However, as far as I can make out, all the clans seem to be at each other throats. Are we all to be from one particular clan, or at least allied clans; or are we a bunch of misfits thrown together by circumstances?
Anyway, those are my concepts, let me know what you think and then I'll choose one and fill in the gaps.

This is stuff I can exp;ain in our own little piece of the board!!!
we got a forum now, "Before the Crash of Thunder" is the name of the game.

I would be interested in a Earthdawn game! If you decide to run one, count me in! If not, do you know where I could get into one?!?!?
The Alcotroll
19th of December, 2004, 22:05
Suggest you check the dates on the Character Acq' threads.
That game was originaly recruiting on the 13th December last year. The DM subsequently dropped off the face of the earth, leaving his LO5R game dead in the water. The Earthdawn game didn't arouse enough interest to even start.
There is an Earthdawn game on the boards, although it only recently recruited a new player as a replacement, and I don't think there's an opening now. You could always post in the visitor's thread (http://www.online-roleplaying.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3616) and ask.

Yes, hold your hands here and say "Wagh!" **Bonks Setzer on the head**
And I'm the only one currently running Earthdawn on this forum. Currently I don't have any space for new characters, though for some reason I'm beginning to have player problems. If there's another hiccup, I'll keep your name in mind as a replacement.
