I have to say I'm totally with itches on the sugar glider thing. In fact, I was just talking with my wife about them the other day and how I think they are freaky. I feel the same way about Koalas. More stongly about Koalas in fact. I don't like how one of the most significant evolutionary advancements that primates have over the other animals - oppose-able thumbs - they have two of. I am slightly threatened by this.

... also they both have weird genitalia. Something my wife had to point out in detail. I didn't look at the pictures, the descriptions were enough to sicken me. FREAKS!

May as well ask here, as I continue to search for an answer.

Without advanced technology (pre-modern times), how much land can a single person (or alternatively, a small family unit) successfully farm?

And I know that it depends on variables like climate, soil quality, abundant but not flooding available water, level ground, etc. And I also know that it depends on what is being farmed. I'm having trouble pinning that down to a factor I'm happy with. Assuming crop rotation and some sort of grain crop, some vegetables, chickens, maybe or a goat or some pigs that get slaughtered at winter to save having to feed it. Unsure about a labour animal like oxen or mule, that increases how much land you need to work to feed it.

But yeah ball park figure, pre-modern, best case scenario, how much land can the single person or small group handle farming labour for?

Mercutio
14th of August, 2013, 23:49
I don't know. Maybe this will help (http://www.jstor.org/stable/1880527?seq=17). It looks like a 500 acre farm requires 23.2 man-years of work, so it looks like, mathematically (assuming two adult farmers), ~40 acres (500 acres / 23 people = 21 acres/person). That sounds about right to me.

EDIT - Apparently, homesteaders were given 40 acre plots during the US's westward expansion. Correction - that was what freed blacks were promised. The original homestead acts provided 160 acres, of which at least 40 were supposed to have trees.

Gralhruk
14th of August, 2013, 23:58
If they had animals to work it, some was likely dedicated pasture to cut down on the amount of work it would take to feed them.

I have issues with Day of the Doctor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_of_the_Doctor). In general is was actually an excellent bit of TV. I quite enjoyed 99.99% of it. But my issue?

They saved the Time Lords. Remember The End of Time? Remember how that nice little twist where ending the Time War wasn't about stopping the Daleks, it was about stopping the Time Lords who had gone so far that they were about to destroy all of reality? About how the Time Lords had gone bad over the course of the war?

Yeah, Moffat doesn't seem to remember it.
I have issues with it.

I agree with that assessment. Although it's not like Gallifrey will be anything other than a Doctor Who version of Superman's Kandor.

When it was getting to the end I kept expecting the WarDoctor to turn around and hit the button anyway, because otherwise all the angst is nothing but an arsepull, and oh yeah - the time lords are evil. I also went "Oh yeah, he doesn't remember. And there are mind wipers there, those must be connected!" Nope. Not at all.

As to Gallifrey. The show has been around for 50 years, give it time and someone who bring it back.

But man, other than that I really did enjoy it. And I need to go back and watch the 10th Doctor episodes.

I guess. I liked the episodes Davies produced better, but I don't know if that's because I don't like Matt Smith or because I didn't like the Moffat direction/production. Let's just say I'm happy to have a new Doctor soon, and I'm hoping that it helps bring me back around. I watched the revival religiously until the second season of Smith. I figured I'd give him the first one as a free pass, but I never really got attached. After that I just kind of watched an episode when I felt like it rather than actively seeking them out.

Actual Unaltered Image. Promise

Heros of Dragon Age is now out. If you're unfamiliar with this game thing, it's a freemium collection battle squad ... thing for Android and iOS devices. The Dragon Age wiki describes it thus:

The game is light on lore, and rather than telling an original story, is instead based on "what if?" scenarios.

These "what if" scenarios include things like "those phone games make a lot of money, can we make one of them too?" and "are Dragon Age fans stupid enough to buy anything with a DA reference (http://www.cafepress.com.au/+dragon-age-origins+gifts) on it?"

You can purchase it for iOS (https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/heroes-dragon-age-founders/id638996176?mt=8) here, for Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ea.game.dragonage_row)here, and the official forums are here (http://forums.klicknation.com/forumdisplay.php/174-Heroes-of-Dragon-Age/), but you need to use a FaceBook account for that.

As I do not - nor will I ever - have an Android, an iOS device or a Facebook account, I can't give any accurate information about the game itself. What I can do is make stuff up. So below is my lie about review of Heros of Dragon Age.

I sat down to play Heros of Dragon Age with building excitement. As a long time Dragon Age fan I have religiously purchased and consumed every product associated with the brand, no matter how vestigial that connection might be (NSFW (http://www.cafepress.com.au/+dragon-age-origins+underwear-panties)), and have spent many hours online defending the artistic merits of reusing dungeons.

A new gameish thing like Heros of Dragon Age is a big deal, and I was sure this would be a critically avowed top-seller. It started out strong - it has the words "Dragon Age" in the title. My excitement dipped somewhat once I launched the game and noticed a numbness growing across my fingers. I tried to ignore it, pawing clumsily at the controls as the sensation passed my wrist and my eyesight began to go dim. I squinted at the screen through my fogged vision, determined to carry on when an agonising fire spiked into my back and danced its way down my spine, sending to me to the floor in a wave of terrible convulsions.

I clung to the game with all of my fading strength, fixated on what little of the game I would still see, until it disappeared under a layer of blood brought forth by my uncontrollable coughing, and the sweet relief of death claimed me.

Pro Has the words 'Dragon Age' in name.
Con I died
Score 9.5/10

I need to get a new computer before the year is out, and if I'm going to change everything up, this seems like a good chance to pick up something that will actually run games. I've been a console gamer for twenty years now, but most of that is due to me not having a machine that could play games I wanted to play.

Opportunity being what it is, I've been looking into what to get. This has meant I've had to take a crash course in computer internals so that I have a very rough idea of what I'd be buying. The contents below are all in flux and none of it will happen for a few months now, but at this stage I've got it narrowed down to four three options. (Please note, my ability to customise these are limited for various reasons I won't get into.)

Option One (excellent and not an option)
An Intel Quad Core i7-4790, 16GB of RAM, 2GB nVidia GeForce GTX 770, an additional 120GB SSD, plus some other stuff. This will run me to just shy of $AU1900. That is much more than I want to spend. I mean if my finances turn out like I'm expecting them to, I can totally afford it, but can and will aren't the same thing. My goal is to only drop about $1600, which makes this $300 more than I'm comfortable with. If money weren't an issue that's where I'd be, but sadly I'll have to let go of the dream and return to reality.

Option Two (good, but not great)
An Intel Quad Core i5-4690, 8GB of RAM, and a 2GB nVidia GeForce GTX 770, plus some other stuff. I still need to do some more digging on this one, but it should run DAI on decent settings, if not ultra-best-of-the-best. This comes in just under my $AU1600 limit and I'm pretty happy with it. I'd really prefer 16GB of RAM, but that pushes me over. The downside is due to my unfamiliarity with PC gaming, I'm locking myself into an unknown arena here and if I struggle to adjust, I kinda boned myself with $1600.

Option Three (average enough to cut it both ways)
An Intel Quad Core i5-4690, 8GB of RAM, a 2GB nVidia Geforce GTX 650, plus some other stuff. It's more of an entry level machine, but as I am new it fits. It'll run the majority of what I want, and it should run DAI on low settings. What's more, even this is far far more powerful than any other PC I've ever owned. The real big advantage of this is the price, it comes in so far under my limit that I can also afford to pick up a next-gen console. I'm not going to get the best out of anything, but I've got as many bases as possible covered.

Option Four (something different)
I give up on the idea of upgrading my gaming machines. I don't do that much gaming, and what I currently possess will cover the basics - though I'm dreading the thought of running DAI on a 360. Instead I install a Linux distro on my current machine (probably Mint), which leaves me with an Intel Core2 Duo E7500, 2GB of RAM, and an Intel G33/G31 Intel GMA 3100. Which ... yeah. It's fine for the non-game stuff.

The plus side to this is two-fold. The first is I get to act snooty because I'm running Linux, and really the only reason I've never swapped over to it before now is due to being lazy. The second is I'll be able to invest the money in a Surface Pro 3. Yes I know, escaping the clutches of Microsoft in one direction just to getting further in their grasp in another. I don't need a Surface Pro 3, I have a Pro 2 and it does everything I want it to do.

But by god do I want a Pro 3, do I ever want one.

What's the harddrive specs on these? Other than the SSD I don't see any information on them, but different harddrives can dramatically affect loading times in your PCs.

Also whats the big difference between option two and three that makes the price point so drastic?

itches
26th of June, 2014, 04:53
The price difference is mostly the graphics card. Plus the more expensive one has some better cooling and glowy lights.

The harddrive isn't anything special. I'd cut the SSD from the builds to save money, figuring I'd just deal with longer loading times. But people keep suggesting the opposite.

The graphics card is slightly worse (you won't notice it) but the CPU is quite a bit better. It's got most of what you need really. It also shouldn't be too hard to later upgrade the RAM if you want to, RAM is pretty cheap.

AUD$1,384.49 If I'm going to pay a fortune for something I may as well do it with a local business.

At this stage I'm actually leaning towards getting something less powerful in terms of RAM and GPU. I'm confident enough that I could upgrade those two in the future if I want something with more grunt. Until then I could make do with a less powerful unit until I actually get my head around using a mouse in a game.

Upgrading a CPU on the other hand, that's not something I want to touch.

I received this email today.

http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/itches/1063029/28026/28026_original.jpg

I'd forgotten that I'd made an okcupid years ago, and this isn't what it looks like. You see when I first made an okcupid account I didn't actually know that it was an online dating site, the real reason is far more shameful. You see many years ago when I was just a little skin irritation, I was into online quizzes. Like, really into them. So much so that I collected all of my favourite results into one big list (http://www.walagata.com/w/itches/bigquizlist.html). That list is a horrifying insight into who I was a decade ago.

With that in mind, when I found a website called "okcupid" that had a lot of online quizzes, naturally I signed up. It even had a function where it compared your results to other people, how fun! Yeah I was rather embarrassed when I discovered what was really going on over there.

The point of this post is that I've not logged into the aforementioned account for many years, and they're about to delete me, so they sent me an email to try and entice me back. I'm going to be honest here, if they'd sent a list of possible quizzes for me to take I'd have logged in for old times sake. But instead they send me a list of people - it's almost like they don't know they're a quiz hosting site with a small sideline of online dating.

Then again, if I were actually interesting in people instead of quizzes, I'm not sure that email would have done the trick. Go back up and have a look at the picture of all those exciting people. See the one the top right? Man, I don't know how I'm going to live my life if I miss out on Partially-Cloudy-Sky.

I'm bored so let's play a world creation game set in Dishonored. (Spoilers for the first game and DLC)

I've noticed the start of a pattern and chosen to extrapolate it from there to make a standard build for Outsider granted powers. It works like this, the Outside grants a person three powers.

Basepower: Blink. Always Blink. Everyone can teleport.
Secondary: The power that gets passed on to your additional powered individuals.
Tertiary: The power that remains

In addition the Outsider blessed one can pass on their power, grant secondary lesser versions of their powers to people. These people only get Basepower (Blink) and the Secondary power.

So let's use Daud as an example. The powers available would be Blink, Pull and Summon Assassin. The last one requires a bit of tweaking in order to make it work correctly, in short in allows Daud's followers to use him as a lodestone for their teleporting, moving to his location even if it would normally be outside their range or out of their sight. In addition it allows Daud to send a telepathic "summons" to one of his followers, asking them to Blink to him.

Delilah works something similar. She has Blink, some version of Windblast which get passed onto her followers, and the weird ability to possess things made in her likeness (paintings/sculptures).

Granny Rags works if we push it a bit. Blink, a version of Vitality and some version of Devouring Swarm.

Corvo is where things get a bit more difficult, being the Player Character he doesn't have any followers that we can use as a baseline, plus he has a wide range of powers available to him. Blink as with everyone, and Dark Vision for the Secondary power as it's one of the more iconic abilities he can have. Lastly I'm inclined to goto Possession, because it's one of the rare abilities that Daud can't have making it a Corvo exclusive.

What do you think?

That's not the real question I'm putting out there, figuring out a way that works with established people is only the first part of the fun. Now that we have a balanced system we can use it to create new characters, in particular, you.

The Outsider has rocked up to you and decided it would be amusing to give you his mark. Suddenly you can teleport! What secondary power would you get that you could pass on to others? What about the Tertiary power that is yours alone?

You don't need to limit yourselves to established Dishonored abilities, you can pull from other places (Deus Ex works pretty well for this). Remember, the idea here is to come up with something that is balanced, not to create an uber all powerful god.

Me? Well Blink, because you have have it. Secondary would be a super strength-carry heavy object thing, because it would be crazy useful day-to-day. And third: Umm ... I don't know
