BigRedRod
20th of March, 2007, 09:36
(also, have I, like, stumbled into some long-running, strange rivalry, or is BRR just pissed?)
Physicists are forever taking the piss out of all other sciences (although chemistry in particular) for being merely subsections of their own discipline. I presume pretty much every field designates their own "bitch" to be made fun of.

Unless you were talking about the lemon eating, that is just me. And more importantly, is something that The Alcotroll just can't man up to doing. What a girl.

zachol

As far as I can tell, there is a dearth of any sports occuring near here.

Hockey just ended, and while I'm not usually one for sports anyway, I am particularly ignorant of what usually happens in the spring.

Saw some basketball on tv the other day, though.
That was fun.

Go... yeah, whatever. I don't know what, if any, team would be going on right now.

(edit: by the way, the physics-chemistry thing... I was working more off my experience of each class within the last year. Which would strongly scew people's preferences toward chemistry, regardless of their previous ideas... my physics teacher is not fun. but hey, it's only high school)

Chemistry is for people who aren't man enough for physics. And when you aren't manly enough for that you turn to biology. After that it isn't long before you're doing a psychology degree surrounded by 80 girls who spend more time on their morning makeup than they ever will thinking.

There's linguistic anthropology too, studying the development of languages and all that.

Technically, archaeology is a sub-field of anthropology, but I try to forget about that. It's really just the study of people, and every little thing about them.

I really have no idea what that could mean.

I assume that's not the same thing that, say, botanists do?

nightinverse
21st of March, 2007, 13:45
Sadly, enough, no. Essentially, figure you're studying a society, or in the case of Anthropology, a culture. Fieldwork involves actually doing your own observation for a protracted period of time, immersing yourself in the life and... then you cross into the ethnographic method.

Really, I don't like the field much.

I've been busy the last couple of days? Want to know why? Well here is a speech I wrote about it, because I do things like that. Also, Orp Alliance should totally join in.
------------------
Hundreds of cumulated hours of work organising more then three thousand people have led us to this day. This hour. This moment. The largest assault in the history of CyberNations (http://www.cybernations.net) is under way, the largest single conflict ever known has seen its dawn. This day, this hour, this moment is one that will live in memory forever.

We walk down a path that is dark, but as I look to the future I don't feel fear. What we fight for will carry me through the darkest hours that approach. This is the day where we have drawn a line in the sand and cried out in one voice "NO MORE!" This is the hour where those who would bring tyranny, destruction and oppression upon us all have been confronted and told in a mighty voice "WE WILL NOT LET THIS PASS!" Now is the moment when those who would struggle for freedom and justice unite and strike down our foes crying out "WE WILL FIGHT!"

As I look around at me, I am filled with pride that I may say I am a part of The Legion. Knowing I am surrounded by so many fine people fills my heart with a joy that words alone can not define. What ever the future may hold for us all, good or ill, I simply hope that I may do credit to my fellow Legionnaires as side by side with our heads held high we stride into battle!

Know no regret what ever tomorrow may bring for we fight with all our heart and we are The Legion!

AVE LEGIO!

They are the experts on studying other cultures. Not just primitive cultures.

From what I've seen, anthropologists totally PWN sociologists.

Sociologists study other cultures too. The reason most studies are not done in other countries is simply a matter of convenience, money, and time. It costs quite a bit of money to go live in another country for the duration of your experiment as well as proving compensation to people if your study does such a thing.

Colleges make a great pool of potential subjects and since we're mostly exposed to American Sociologists we really just see their studies done in America. Professors and scientists talk to others in various nations and work/adapt theories to fit within all the various cultures.

They don't PWN sociologists. Psh.

BrianL03

Skid, that picture is the win and what bothers me sometimes about online games even PBP ones. I always end up losing touch with the other players.

As to MMORPGs, the only ones I've played have been Ragnarok Online (both iRO and private servers) as well as FFXI.

My eventual problem with MMOs has been the fact of play-per-month. In this regard, I like Guild Wars from what I've seen of over-the-shoulder play with a friend. However, in that the social gathering in the wilds of characters is completely lost. Hence why I've turned on occasion to the private Ragnarok servers.

But in the long run, I see companies turning these PPM games into a cash cow, much like Blizzard has with WOW. Their lack of publishing any truly new games (the delay of Ghost, where's Starcraft II, let alone something different from their games and sequels) goes to show this kind of status quo profiteering. Blizzard used to be publishing a game, be it a sequel or expansion, every two years (if not one), and with interesting innovation in it, while simultaneously producing an entirely different game. This has since gone down to three years for a sequel to WOW, along with not even a hint of another game being produced.

MMOs make game companies soft.

I only saw the original Pirates of the Carribean, and despite Kiera Knightley being very attractive and the sequel featuring an Illithid, I had no real urge to see the sequel. By all accounts the third is gash.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a film I have not seen in a long time. I shall take it along with Wayne's World and Wayne's World II and some beer and have an awesome time come the fifth.

LynMars
30th of May, 2007, 06:18
Pirates 3 is better than 2, I think. Maybe cuz they had a plot idea to go by this time. The comedic bits were a bit less grating too.

Also, they realized Kiera Knightley hasn't a chest to speak of, so this time, they used multiple excuses to show off her legs instead. The guys didn't mind.

SinbadEV
30th of May, 2007, 07:51
Yess... nice legsess... but for the characters of Bueller vs Sparrow, I think I'll still have to go with Sparrow in an "annoyingly grating" contest by a hair.

BrianL03

I have to go with that Sparrow would win, no matter the contest, due to his random luck easily overpowering Bueller's, which only landed his friends in trouble despite helping them grow in the long run.

However, the entire time, I would be rooting for Bueller instead due to the fact he's from the Chicago suburbs (most likely the north/northwestern ones due to the route he takes into the city (and Wikipedia affirms that! I am way too good!)).

Too bad he goes to a Cubs game, however.

So then, what's everyone majoring in?

Me...high school.

Later at the University of Utah though: Master of Science in Computer Information Technologies and BS in Computer Science hopefully.

I started in that direction myself. Not going that way anymore, however.

I'm getting a BA in Political Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and in a few years, I'm going to try and follow that up with a JD (specialization as of yet undetermined), and a Masters in either Public Policy, International Relations, or another Social Sciences field.

I did the crazy thing and am going for both the BA in English and the BS in Education, rather than just making English my Sec Ed focus. This is part of the reason it's taking me so long to get through school. The other part is, I'm lazy.

You can fucking keep it.

That's starting to be my opinion too, and I'm not even into it yet.

I want to have a fifth year seniorship and also complete another Bachelor's in that timeframe!

Fun fact: I completed all the degree requirements, general eds excepting, this entire calendar year. In fact, if it weren't for the gen eds, I would have been done with school in May. Yeah for taking all 30 Political Science course hours during two semesters!

Trust me, I've walked the real line, and I would rather be there, but I made a commitment.

I'm considering History as an option myself. Good courses in the department where I am.

I couldn't do that, least not for my Education reqs. Have to have certain gen eds done first, a certain GPA maintained, a test (or certain ACT score) had, and then have to do it all in prescribed stages, theoretically ending with Student Teaching.

Before this last semester, could have theoretically done that with English, but now you have to do the one Intro course as a prereq for half the others. Also, I dunno that one would have the time to do that much reading and those many papers, since that is ALL English does.

Am almost all done with Gen Eds, though, have 1 more math class, a science course, a social studies course, and 2 semesters of a language to complete and then I can fully focus on English and Education.

That's freaking awesome. I love Canadian people.

You've got that the wrong way around. It's the movie that got a team dedicated to it.

I'm told that the rest of Rush Hour wasn't as good, but this is fantastic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkYDxW30vS4)

Help the police commin' straight from the underground
A young chap's got it good 'cause I'm brown
And not the other color
Some police think
They have the authority to carry out inquiries
I don't mind, 'cause I ain't the one
For an excellent policeman with a badge and a gun
To be reasonably arrested and thrown in jail
We can go toe to toe in the middle of a cell
Havin' lots of fun 'cause I'm a teenager
With a little bit of gold and a pager
Searchin' my car, lookin' for the biscuits
Thinkin' every chap is sellin' bits of chocolate
You'd rather see me writing with a pen
Than me and Lorenzo rollin' in a Benz-o
Go swimming with Lorenzo
And when I'm finished, Bring the yellow tape
To tape off the scene of the sack race
Thank you very much for the bread and water
I don't know if they are naughty or what
Search a chappy down and grabbin' his hat
And on the other hand
Without a hat, they can't get none
But don't let it be a black and a white one
'Cause they'll tickle you until you're giggling
Black police having fun with the white cop
Ice Cube will entertain
all the local bobbies in a blue uniform
Just 'cause I'm from the CPT
Nice police are nice to me, huh
A young man in a hot bath
And when I finish, it's gonna be a party
Of cops having fun in L.A.
Yo, Dre, I got something to say ...

Help the Police
Help help help the Police
Help help help the Police
Help help help the Police

The man played by Adam Buxton in that sketch is my rolemodel should I father any children over the course of my life. Kids need NWA in their lives.

I wish I'd seen it when I was driving back from Dorrset with a friend the other day (we were playing Straight Outta Compton in an effort to stay awake and not have a fatal car crash). Then we could've sung along.
