View Full Version : LoTR Freeform

As no one will agree to take on the charge of being a GM for a LotR's game perhaps a freeform game is in order. I would like to know if anyone is interested apart from myself?
LeeCHeSSS
16th of January, 2003, 19:55
Freeform requires decent grasp of a specific ruleset, from what I read in the previous thread about LotR not too many people actually owned the book...
SponkleofInfini
16th of January, 2003, 20:09
Not to many people owned BESM either, but then again that has now died.
Anyone who has read the novel would love to play a freeform such as this, or so I would gather. The only real problem is character creation, the rest is basicaly dnd. I am sure a person who owns the book could help someone create a character if need be though.
But then again we will have to see if there is any interest shown.

Yup, I believe Itches is going to try and revive the BESM freeform game, hence I haven't deleted it yet.

I would get back into it but the story is lame I'd personally prefer something along the lines of a fuedal japan setting rather then the mecha game which has been played to death.
but hey that is off topic, this is Lord of the Rings people :)

Yes i am going to revive the game. Same setting, but this time there will be a good story
*gasp*
As soon as i get around to making my character

Do you want the old threads to remain? If not, give either me, Gralhruk (I hate that name!) or WhoNAN a message...
*continues the blatant off-topic posting*
Gralhruk

Hey! What's wrong with my name? I hope you aren't complaining that it's difficult to type *ahem* LeeCHeSSS ;).

Yes it is, I always mix up the r's and h's
Gralhruk

And I'm always forgetting which letters are capitalized and how many S's are there :).

Just do as I do, and cope paste it.
Or give him an amusing tittle, like Our Great Moderator.
There is a reason I keep referring to you as Our Honoured Admin
As to the old threads, keep the Charcter one, and the IN-charcter one.
The huge OOC one is another matter.

You can call me Gral.
Say, isn't that a song?

I just read it and im already lost.
BigRedRod
17th of January, 2003, 04:59
It had a fairly good plot
but it wasn't reall the best thing for a free-form
too many people pulling in different directions
especialluy the mix up at the start to wether it's round a planet or a ball of gas
itches

Which is where i come in.

Just when I thought this thread was about the addition of a LotR freeform. Curse you Danny for mentioning BESM here, now everyone takes it upon themeselves to post their two cents about it. *Shakes fist*
<continues to curse some more>
So do any of you have anything to say in regards to the thread topic?
Cadrius
18th of January, 2003, 00:52
Hmm, so what rule system would it be running off of? Decipher's? Sounds fun, but it almost looks like the two of us would be the only ones interested. I've done the whole two person freeform thing before and it's fun but we'd need more.
SponkleofInfini
18th of January, 2003, 00:56
Well Druid, and the Friendly Fiend own the book also, so they may be interested. BRR was thinking about buying the book, maybe someone can give him a bit of a nudge.
Cadrius
18th of January, 2003, 08:27
Hmm, well it might have some merit then. Although I imagine the difficulties in freeforming this will be vastly greater than a standard D&D game. Any thoughts on what age we'd play in?
SponkleofInfini
18th of January, 2003, 11:59
Well any would suit me, I suppose the 4th would give us a bit of versatility in regards to plot as it is fairly open. Playing previous ages would limit us considerably, but still would be quite interesting.
Cadrius
19th of January, 2003, 08:47
Eh, it'd only really limit us if we wanted to seriously tamper with the plotline (taking the Ring, preventing Numenor from sinking, etc). But the 4th grants a whole hell of a lot of freedom even if it does remove the one overriding, monolithic evil from the campaign.
TheDruid20
19th of January, 2003, 08:56
Well I think this type og game is best with a DM.... but if no one is stupid... I mean adventurous enough to take that on then freeform is ok.

Its been a while since I was deep into the Tolkien lore, But morgaoth (sp?) the big evil god that Sauron was a servent too, he was prophised to return.
So you dont really need to remove the big over-lord evil from the gamme.

Morgoth is the name your loking for :)

It actually feels a lot like d20 in some respects so it's nothing too shocking. The very fact that it doesn't reward people for killing makes it highly appealing in my eyes.

!!
This system just seems so very odd to me
Hands up who wants to explain the xp/level system then
Cadrius
20th of January, 2003, 06:36
It's really quite simple.
Experience is doled out in a couple of ways. The primary way is setting story goals ahead of time. If the party meets the primary goal they get 1000 xp to split among themselves, secondary goals are worth 500 (again, split).
Additionally successful usage of skills can be used to award exp provided they were integral to the story. Example: they have to cross the Misty Mountains and into Mirkwood, the woodsy character utilizes his Survival (Mountains) skill to keep the party warm and well-fed.
Depending on the TN (or DC in d20 terms) the player would be awarded the TNx10 exp with the other players receiving half that.
Of course good roleplaying can always be rewarded but all in all it takes the emphasis off "We've got to kill to get better" and toward "We need to keep the story moving."
Edit: Levelling doesn't really exist. You basically have Advancements. Whenever you reach 1000 xp you get an advancement. Basically you get five points to spend on developing your character. There's a table in the book (likely under the Experience section) that says what you can do with these points. You could use some to improve skills, or maybe improve an attribute, or join a new order.

I think Sponkle should call the cops if Itches trespasses. That would be fun don't you think? Maybe add in the virtual virus to the trespassing. Or better yet, how about a restraining order! We could restrain Itches from visiting people at their homes and from posting links! :fun:

Ok so we doing d20 or Coda?
SponkleofInfini
21st of January, 2003, 20:02
Well Coda, because if we make it d20 it will basically turn into dnd :)
Still waiting for Danny to give us a forum, continues to hope that he will.

21st of January, 2003, 23:38
Ok I have been informed by Danny to discuss a name for the fre-form forum. Anyone have ideas? Danny didn't think my suggestion of "Lord of the Rings" was original enough :) Oh while you're at it come up with a description for the game to :) Oh and another thing bug some more people into buying the book or reading up on the rules and recruiting the for the game.
While you all busy yourselves with that I will be other there.....:fun:

Why I think the name "Lord of the Ring" is unoriginal, and even pure deception:
Are you going to replay the story around the one ring? I doubt it.
Nuff said.

'Middle-Earth'?

"Joey and the shiny teapot?"
"Mike's adventure in the grass?"
"Jo jo's Bizarre adventure"
"Galatic spacebattle 9000"
well clearly it needs to be some pun about rings
but i'm fresh out

After the Ring (or After the War)
4th Age
Wake of Change
New Beginning
Hmm, those area all pretty cheesy. Maybe I can do better...
SponkleofInfini

Description: The Elder days are gone. The Middle days are passing. The Younger days are beggining. The time of the Elves is over but our time is at hand. The world of Men.

without being cheesy or simplt godawful
although Itches' works well too

25th of January, 2003, 09:49
Yeah I like the description you gave Itches well done, I think we should use that description with lets say the hybrid titles I came up with from Cadrius and BRR I think: Middle Earth: The 4th age, what do the rest of you think?
Also Itches, BRR will you be joining, the more the merryer :)
BigRedRod

sadly I do not own this book
alas

Cadrius
26th of January, 2003, 11:38
Hmm, it all sounds quite good to me. My only concern is the lack of a tangible Chronicler. LotR games seem far more story driven than your standard 3rd ed game.
