View Full Version : Interest Check: Dresden Files RPG

Vampires. Zombies. Werewolves. Faeries. Black Magic. Missions from God.
Now who can't have fun with that mash-up?
I recently have picked up and am currently perusing the Dresden Files RPG and am getting an itch that I should best ignore. That is, to actually run a game using this system and setting it in the Dresdenverse.
Why this system? I like the fact that it is essentially character driven and is on the lighter side of crunchy. There is room for customization and perhaps most importantly it isn't about me doing all of the prep work. (What can I say? I am inherently lazy).
I'd be looking for 4-6 players, with a preference of 4. You would need familiarity with both the rules system and the Dresden Files to be eligible. I'm not looking for experts here, but you have to be able to at least differentiate between the White Court, Black Court and Red Court.
Power level would be Chest Deep, which would allow for a wide array of potential characters, including full blown wizards.
Setting? That'll be part of the discussion that happens during set-up, as I'll be taking a collaborative approach. I'd be ok using Baltimore, which is already statted up in the system, but I have a preference for going through city creation as outlined in the book. I will say that I am taking Chicago right off the table to start.
I'm not even looking for character concepts right now, just whether there's enough interest to look into running it.
EDIT: If Harry Dresden does show up it will be in a very brief cameo moment. Same is true for most of the other major characters from the books.

YES.
I'm not that familiar with the rules, but I am a huge fan of the books and definitely familiar with the setting.
I'm sure I could pick the rules up pretty quick.
Also jeez there's a bunch of games cropping up now.

It does tend to be feast or famine around here.

Like z, I'm a fan of the books and would like to play. I'm sort of familiar with the rules, kinda. From what I understand it's modified Burning Wheel, which is modified FATE. At worst, I'm sure I could find the rules.

Can I play as a toaster? ...wait... different game, sorry.
While the idea is interesting I think I'm going to sit this one out. I'm not familiar with the setting even though I find it interesting from the little I have heard.

Dude you should read the books. They're pretty awesome.
The first handful are kinda weak and formulaic, but it gets really good later.

I have heard this before. With all the positive feedback I have got from people around these boards consider them officially "added to the list".

Yes, yes, yes, I want another Dresden Files game (I am currently playing in one F2F, which just finished season 2 with me casting a 31-shift evocation and using all my fate points and consequences; it was awesome).
I have read up to Blood Rites, and have the rest on my reading list, so I'll be able to keep up setting-wise.
And since I'm currently playing in the game (and have been for 7 months) I have experience in the system, although I haven't actually read the rulebook, per se. I let the GM tell me what I can and can't do usually, but things should go fine here.
I am very much in support of collaborative city creation, as well as the collaborative character creation thingy (neither of which we used in my F2F game).
No character concept yet, but since I'm playing a Wizard in my F2F game, I'd probably do something decidedly different on here. Possibly True Mortal.

Poking away at the rules. Currently heading towards some sort of focused practitioner "electromancer" deal.
Spellcasting is confusing.

Hey EC- do you at least have access to the rules?
If I can get one more person showing interest, we might be able to start getting this off the ground.
That said: what kind of game are people leaning towards? Investigation? Political? Combat? Something else entirely? Inquiring minds want to know.

I told Darius in IM that I'm looking at playing a Pure Mortal, and that my interest really is in playing a kind of reporter for something like the Weekly World News. Obviously it's based a little on Susan before she's bitten by Bianca, but I'm thinking the guy (I almost always play a man) would be a bit on the cracked side of things, perhaps one of those conspiracy theorist types who dropped LSD when it was cool and swears that the feds experimented on him, which is how he knows about some of the things that go bump in the night. (This latter bit about being a bit nuts wasn't in my IM, Darius, but it's something I've given more thought to as I finished Grave Peril and am waiting for Summer Knight to arrive in the mail. Also, that means I've just now got to the part in the series where the White Council, via Dresden's attempt to save Susan, has gone to war against the Red Court Vampires.)

Some sort of political/investigation thing would be interesting.
Electromancer chick has very little control over her power. When she does summon the lightning, it's always big. She'd fit in perfectly with a "kill everything" sort of campaign, except she hates the way her magic works and hates fighting in general, and she's never in a situation where massive bolts of lightning are helpful anyway.
As far as being useful, she's sort of tuned in to the supernatural world, has connections, and might be interested in helping to track something down. Reporter guy is on the trail of something, ends up following leads to "that witch" and she agrees to help or something.

Given what I've heard so far, it sounds like I could make it work with three? Thoughts? Should I consider putting a forum request in?
zachol

Another player or two would be nice, three is a little thin.
Although if nobody else bites I bet we could make it with three.

Darius - yes, I have access to the rules, as I hang out with my GM often enough. I was meaning to give them a read through anyway.
I think 3 might be a bit too few, but if it came to it, I don't mind. Isn't Gral a huge Fate fan? We should poke at him.
Darius, I haven't read through this aspect of the rules, but I believe non-mortals are reserved for NPCs, right? If that's the case, I'll probably play a focused practitioner summoner, or something.
Darius

That's not quite right. At the level of play we are looking at, White Court vampires, changelings, and a few other custom non-mortals are available for PCs as well.

It's definitely not modified Burning Wheel. Just an expanded version of FATE3.0.
I'm interested, if you'll have me. I've read Storm Front, I have the second book, and I've been playing FATE since it was called FUDGE. :P
Oh also I have both of the Dresden Files RPG pdfs.
I'd maybe like to play a Changeling of some sort. Something related to the Fae.

So are we good?
What are people thinking for city?
The only city (uh, cities) I'm personally familiar with are the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul).
Otherwise, I've always been interested in Seattle.

We can fret about the city when we ourselves a forum, yeah?
I don't really care either way, as long as we get a dense urban setting out of it.
Darius
24th of April, 2011, 12:50
I'll probably be putting the forum request in either tomorrow or the day after that.
I am also open to the possibility of a custom fictional urban setting.

anymore opening for this? I've read through to Side Jobs on repeated rereads, I own hard and digital copies of the RPG books, having read them, am playing in a game on another site, working on a couple of games for RL play testing and all that.
What depth are you looking at? Any builds you do not want to see? City creation would be fun. Personally I'd rather avoid Chicago, depending on which Case File (setting block) your going with. I think some place in Florida, LA or Alaska would be interesting, but it all depends on what the plan is.
So ya if there is a spot please let me know...all over this like a fat kid on a cupcake...and coming from a cupcake loving fat kid that tells ya something!

Darius mentioned Baltimore, which could be fun.
I just had an idea like DC, which has a long history of "magical" interaction, and fighting demons in the shadow of Capitol building seems cool.
I'm also familiar with Boston.
A custom fictional setting would work, too.

How on earth did I miss that this was in the wrong forum?
Darius
24th of April, 2011, 22:53
Because I thought it was just going to be an interest check and it turned into a CA?
The fault lies with me. Obviously.

Nah. I should have caught the change and moved it. I even read the thread and didn't catch it.
zachol
25th of April, 2011, 00:29
Honest question: should "interest checks" just go straight to CA, or is something like "I was thinking of running a game, here are some options, would anyone be interested in any of these?" alright to post in CY?
itches
25th of April, 2011, 00:39
They shouldn't go in CY unless you were looking for feedback or discussion on which option could work best. The line is a bit murky, it's less about it belonging in CA and more about keeping clutter out of CY, so just do your best and worse case senario we shift the thread once the thrust of the topic becomes clear.

Darius

Seeing as how you were one of the people listed when I requested the forum made, I'd say you're in.
We are still trying to narrow down the setting, but you should take that to the actual game forum, and not here.
EDIT: Game is full. Feel free to send a PM (or just lurk) if interested in perhaps joining at a future point.
