See if you can solve these riddles:
Winter's chill,
Pervades you, till,
You feel my hug,
Around you, snug.
Floating on water,
Light as air,
A thousand strong men,
Move me not a hair.
Red are my eyes, my teeth long,
Eat I neither blood nor meat,
Razor-sharp though big and strong,
Fast I step on cloven feet.
Power and strength here do fail,
A gentle touch brings success,
My bright-toothed smile doth prevail,
A gentle touch gives egress.
Running, leaping,
Never creeping.
Armless, footless,
Some say useless.
Thin or fat,
Quick or slow,
This unchanging -
Wind my foe.
One falls but never breaks,
One breaks but never falls,
Of these twins born was I,
To bid a parent goodbye.
Often held but not by fingers,
Always wet but never rusting,
Love my master, I will linger,
Hate him, and I am disgusting.
I've no colour and no hue,
And of nothing I am made,
See me and ye glance right through,
Matterless, I cast no shade.
Barely of substance,
But within me you see,
A myriad of designs,
Infinite variety.
And of nothing I am made,
See me and ye glance right through,
Matterless, I cast no shade.
Lots more will come...
Here's the ones that have been solved:
I am there and then I'm not,
I am Eden, I am hell,
Have me not and you got naught,
Have and with an angel dwell.
Answer: Love
Behold ye a thing fantastic,
Neither box nor a bowl,
Firm and rigid, unelastic,
But can swallow oceans whole.
Answer: Sieve
We're burnt in fire so you see far,
Unburnt and free we blinding are.
Answer: Sand
Legs I have, legs full four
Head I have but never roar
Foot that never steppe has trod
No lion I, no, by god.
Answer: Bed
In rock I am but not in stone,
In marrow I am but not in bone,
I am in bolster but not in bed,
Neither in living nor in dead.
Answer: R
Low, low, lower do we rush,
Soft as hair, rock we crush.
Answer: Roots
Down I go, but never up,
Save my mistress bid me rise,
Small to fit a thimble-cup,
Vast as aught beneath the skies.
Answer: Water
No head, an eye,
And one tooth keen,
I cannot die,
Am oft not seen.
Answer: Needle
A strange beast am I,
To this you will attest.
On one leg I do my work,
On three I always rest.
Answer: Wheelbarrow
The more you have,
The less you see.
Search your mind:
What can I be.
Answer: Darkness
Dark and empty be our home,
We are light without a shade,
Never moving, slow we roam,
Then, unfading, slowly fade.
Answer: Stars
Many for love of me went mad,
Yet their ardour left me cold,
Oft men have beat me who am not bad,
Youth-fresh I shine even when old.
Answer: Gold
Wouldst carry my burden?
'Twould break thy back.
Rich I am not, no, not I,
Yet silver is my track.
Answer: Snail
My life be hot and short,
Enlightenment be my forte.
Answer: Candle
In November am born,
In March I die.
Keen my spear, yet no foe,
Heard ever my battlecry.
OR
All aglitter, free of fear,
No rust ever touch'd my spear.
Answer: Icicle
Remove my skin,
Not a tear i shed,
My tears are yours:
You cry instead.
Answer: Onion
Cunning invention am I,
By sages of old constructed,
Permitting ev'ry eye,
Through walls to see unobstructed.
Answer: Window
Once a second I am here,
But not once in all the years,
Once a minute I appear,
Call me by my name, my dears.
Answer: N
Take me out and strike my head,
I now am black who once was red.
Answer: Match
This one is old, this one is new,
They must give me what I borrow,
Always I'm white, sometimes I'm blue,
I am someone else tomorrow.
Answer: Bride
Teeth I have but one,
My foes never run,
Silent they fall,
Who once stood tall.
Answer: Axe
An eyeless warrior, I,
From me the wicked fly.
Answer: Justice
