I've been on orp less then a year so I don't quite know the history of this place. every where I go on here I seem to find a reference to the spam war. I looked to the time line for answers but I could not find any information.

The first rule of SPAM war is: you do not talk about SPAM war.

The second rule of SPAM war is: you DO NOT talk about SPAM war.

Well, the truth is there isn't much to tell. Lots of spambots were registering and posting spam. The admins spent lots of time banning spambots and deleting spam.

It's much more glamorous when shrouded in mystery and tagged with a cool name.

Boy am I glad I wasn't the one sorting out the real users from the spambots.
Edit: so when it says, on the who's online page, google spiderbot or yahoo spider bot it really means it's a potential spambot

No. Those are the crawlers from those search engines. You know how Google and Yahoo can find stuff from all over the web? It's because they send out bots that ask for the pages all over the web, and then cache the information (or something like that, I think).

Bots have to go through the process of registering in order to post and have actual screen names, which aren't always that different from normal users'. But their behaviour is.

With regards to board questions: what does the [ARCHIVED] tag mean on some of the games?

Pretty much they are closed for posting and exempt from the infrequent board clean ups we do.

so that's just when the forums get pinged by a search engine. gotcha
