Gen Con Indy 2009 is less than three weeks away. It will be my first Gen Con since '97. I'm fairly stoked about it.
Anybody else going?

I wish. I've never been to ANY con, though. They're very much cost prohibitive.

I've been to my first con-esque event here in Montreal, Otakuthon 2009... And I must say... I guess I'm not the con type! Between the yaoi fanboys that get frustrated because you mispronounced "yaoi" and yell to everybody your homophobic, and the little twelve years old's dressed as Naruto or Sakura and that look pretty bad, or even over weight girls dressed in skin tights thinking their cool, when their not. Between going into a random room to discover two emo japanese kids (boys) liplocking on stage with fourteen years olds (girls) screaming in joy, or even old perverts chilling and masturbating in the hentai visionning rooms near midnight, grueling over plants tentacle raping little girls with oversized breasts. Between the vendors that sold items that could be bought elsewhere for at least half the price (since when does manga sell for 15$-20$) or a bunch of kids (and adults even) jumping on you giving you hugs, because apparently it's the thing now for otakus and the like. And when finally a sort of danse party occurs, something I was sort of looking forward too, the scene was way too bizarre... japanese dance music mixed with urban club music with people ranging from twelve to forty years old dancing... together (what parent would let her or his twelve year old at a dance party around two to three in the morning?) Based on what I saw, con goers aren't really eye candy; and why, why, do you need a very, very, hot looking woman dressed in a sexy miniskirt dancing in a somewhat provocative way, in front of a crowd composed mostly of minors? Sure, the most fun I've had last night was watching some nice mecha anime, watching some cool fireworks, and beating my friend at Mortal Kombat on the PlayStation, or seeing this little girl so happy when I agreed to be her dance partner when we were playing DDR, where nobody else wanted to... I've seen way to many ugly and cheap looking costumes on people that shouldn't be wearing such things, and all the nerds and geeks sweating, smelling, wreacking when you barely approached them.
I guess cons aren't for me.

There are many things funny about this.

Indeed, although I am curious what you expected from something entitled Otakuthon.

I'm with BRR here. I don't think it's "cons" that are the problem with that one. It was which particular con you went to.

I knew that there were going to be some things that got under my skin, but I didn't actually think it would have been like that!
Maybe you're right, I'll have to go to another one... but what's sure, Otakuthon 2009 is off the list ;) Sure, I like anime and manga, but not to the point at going through all of that again.

My friends have persuaded me to go to Animethon tomorrow; it will be my first convention of any significance. If it turns out to be anything like that one, I might have to get better friends.
